Specs

In recent years, competition in Malaysia's luxury MPV market has gradually intensified. Consumers' demands for such models are no longer limited to space but now place greater emphasis on the overall performance of power, configuration, and comfort. As a popular model in this segment, the 2024 Toyota Alphard has not made adjustments to its dimensions in this update, but the optimization of detailed features and fine-tuning of its power system have left many potential users looking forward to whether it can continue its previous reputation. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify the actual performance of this vehicle in scenarios such as daily commuting and family outings, to see if it remains the top choice among luxury MPVs.

The exterior of the 2024 Alphard continues the family-style design, with an overall style that is steady and highly recognizable. The large front grille paired with chrome trim gives a strong visual impact; the LED headlight assemblies on both sides are connected to the grille, and the internal lens structure improves nighttime illumination. The side profile of the car is smooth, and the combination of 19-inch multi-spoke wheels with 225/55 R19 tires ensures both support and proportionate balance with the body. At the rear, the horizontally aligned LED tail light group is connected in the middle with chrome trim, while the dual exhaust layout on either side adds a touch of sportiness.

Sitting inside, the materials and craftsmanship of the interior align with the positioning of a luxury MPV. The center console is wrapped with soft-touch materials and paired with wood grain panels and metallic trim, enhancing the overall texture. A 14-inch central touchscreen is located at the top of the console, offering a high level of operation smoothness, and the built-in multimedia system supports smartphone connectivity. The dashboard is fully digital and features multiple display modes, allowing for intuitive viewing of vehicle status and driving information. The inclusion of a HUD head-up display allows the driver to access critical information such as speed and navigation without looking down, thereby improving driving safety.

In terms of space, the 2024 Alphard measures 5010mm in length, 1850mm in width, and 1950mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3000mm, ensuring ample seating room. The highlight is the second-row Ottoman captain chairs, which support multi-angle adjustments and leg rests, allowing passengers to fully relax their legs while seated. The front row seats are 8-way power adjustable with memory and heating functions, while the front passenger seat has 4-way power adjustment with similar memory and heating functionality. The third-row seats support a 50:50 split-fold configuration, which, when folded, can expand the trunk space to meet the storage needs of family trips. There are plenty of storage compartments inside the car, and spaces like door panels and the central armrest box are highly practical in terms of storage.

In terms of power, the 2024 Alphard is equipped with a 2.4T turbocharged engine with a maximum power output of 205kW (278PS) and a peak torque of 430N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quick at the start, providing good acceleration with a light press on the accelerator; the mid-to-late acceleration is also very linear, and when overtaking, pressing the accelerator harder prompts the transmission to downshift proactively and provide continuous power output. The Normal mode is suitable for daily commuting with smooth power delivery; the Sport mode offers more sensitive throttle response and more aggressive shifting logic, ensuring a certain level of driving enjoyment.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise, has minimal play, and feels moderate; the combination of MacPherson front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension effectively filters road bumps, minimizing body movement over speed bumps or uneven roads, thus ensuring ride comfort. During cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, without causing significant discomfort to passengers. In terms of braking, the brake pedal feels linear, and the braking force output is stable. The braking distance from 100-0km/h is relatively short, providing sufficient confidence to the driver.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9L/100km. In actual driving, the fuel consumption in urban roads is around 10-11L/100km, while on highways it is about 7-8L/100km, which is fairly standard. As for noise control, the vehicle performs well in isolating engine noise and road noise, and wind noise is also not obvious when driving at high speeds, ensuring a quiet cabin environment.

In terms of safety configurations, the 2024 Alphard is equipped with 6 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, active braking, and other functions. The inclusion of a 360-degree panoramic image system and front and rear radars makes parking more convenient. These configurations are at the mainstream level among vehicles in the same class, providing comprehensive safety protection for passengers.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota Alphard performs well in terms of power, space, configuration, and comfort. Compared to vehicles in the same class, its second-row seating experience and rich features are its advantages, making it suitable for consumers who value high-quality family travel. If you need a luxury MPV that can meet daily commuting needs while also being capable of family long-distance travel, the 2024 Alphard is worth considering.

Pros
Comprehensive and practical safety configuration, multiple accident avoidance with active braking, and lane departure warning
Comfortable and luxurious interior, Ottoman seats, and JBL audio enhance the riding experience
Power performance suitable for daily use, 2.4T/2.5T engine provides smooth and strong low-speed following
Cons
Poor acceleration after exceeding 160km/h, insufficient extreme power
Wide body makes it inconvenient in narrow alleys and old neighborhoods for turning and parking, prone to scratches
The floor is uneven after folding the third-row seats, limiting the flexibility of trunk space

As the owner of the 2023 Alphard, after driving in Malaysia for half a year, let's talk about the exterior first – this generation's design is sharper than the previous model. The large chrome grille with LED headlights catches quite a lot of attention in the KLCC parking lot! But honestly, although the tail's through-light design is stylish, in Malaysia's frequent heavy rains, it seems to lack a bit of the "stable business vibe" of the old model. So giving it 4 points seems fair – it looks good, but it's not astonishingly great. Next, performance. The 2.5T turbo engine is super practical during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour! When stuck in traffic on Jalan Ampang, the 430N·m torque at low RPM makes it easy to keep up with the car ahead, unlike some sluggish MPVs that get frustrating. Last week, I drove my family to Genting, and during the uphill drive, the 8AT gearbox shifted smoothly. Even with seven people on board and the air conditioning running, there was no obvious loss of power. However, once you hit 160km/h on the highway, further acceleration feels a bit lacking. After all, the car weighs over 2 tons. For everyday use, it’s more than enough, but if you're chasing ultimate speed, it falls a bit short. A score of 4 matches well with its "business and family-friendly" positioning.

As the owner of the 2023 Alphard, having driven it in Malaysia for half a year, what I appreciate the most is its safety features! The morning and evening rush hours in Kuala Lumpur are like a parking lot. Last time, on Jalan Ampang, I was following too closely, and the car in front suddenly braked. The active braking system made a "thud" sound and stopped the car for me. My palms were sweating at the time—this feature really saves lives! When I take my family on highway trips along the North–South Expressway, the lane departure warning gently shakes the steering wheel to remind me, and the ACC adaptive cruise control keeps a safe distance from the car in front, making long distances much less stressful. With six airbags and a 360-degree camera system, even my mom in the back seat kept saying, "This car makes me feel so safe." As for performance, the 2.5T turbo engine paired with the 8AT is adequate for local road conditions. It accelerates effortlessly in the city, easily keeping up with traffic as soon as the light turns green. However, when overtaking trucks on the highway, you do need to step on the gas pedal a bit harder, and there’s about half a second's delay before the turbo kicks in—it doesn’t react as sharply as German cars. That said, considering its weight of over two tons, I’m quite satisfied with its performance. After all, the reason for buying an Alphard wasn’t for aggressive driving. Comfort and stability are the priorities.

As the owner of the 2024 Alphard and having driven it in Malaysia for over half a year, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Traffic jams are common in the Kuala Lumpur city area, and there were several occasions when the car in front suddenly braked. The proactive braking system responded quickly to help me slow down and avoid collisions. Last month, I took my family to Genting Highlands, where there are many winding mountain roads. The lane departure warning system gently reminded me to correct the steering. Combined with six airbags for the entire vehicle and seatbelt reminders for all seats, I feel especially at ease taking elderly and children on trips. In terms of safety, I give it a perfect 5 out of 5 with no complaints at all! As for the interior, I am quite satisfied overall. The JBL audio system provides steady sound quality for listening to Malay songs on the highway, and the 14-inch central control screen operates smoothly. The front seat heating is comfortable for those occasionally chilly evenings. However, there's a small regret: although the second-row captain's chairs come with an Ottoman, the plastic trim in the middle passage area is prone to fingerprints, requiring frequent cleaning. Also, after folding the third-row seats, the trunk floor isn't completely flat, which means you have to adjust slightly when placing large pieces of luggage. But these are minor issues—overall, the craftsmanship and features are still high-end enough, and giving it a 4 out of 5 is absolutely fair!

As the owner of the 2023 Alphard, after driving it for over half a year, it's been incredibly comfortable to use in Malaysia! Let's talk about the performance first; the 2.5T engine performs particularly smoothly during KL's early morning traffic jams. It doesn't feel sluggish when following at low speeds, and overtaking on the North-South Expressway is very efficient. However, the power slightly weakens after reaching 180 on the highway, but it's completely sufficient for daily use. A score of 4 out of 5 is very reasonable. The interior quality is impeccable. The JBL sound system is fantastic for listening to Malaysian songs during long trips. The second-row Ottoman seats with heating are very stable even when taking the family on twisty roads up to Genting. The third row, however, does not fold into a fully flat floor, so some adjustment is needed for luggage. Overall, I'm still very satisfied. The safety features are the most reassuring. Last time at an intersection in PJ, I almost got cut off by a motorbike, and the auto braking system stopped me just in time! The 360-degree camera is super convenient for parking on narrow roads near the Twin Towers. Features like seat belt reminders for all seats and six airbags make it completely worry-free when traveling with kids. Safety definitely deserves a full 5 out of 5! As for the exterior, the large chrome grille looks very classy under Malaysia's sunlight, and every time I park in front of a shopping mall, it always catches people’s attention. However, the car is quite wide, so extra care is needed when parking in spaces in older neighborhoods. A score of 4 out of 5 is quite fitting. In summary, this car is very suitable for both family and business use in Malaysia. Highly recommended for friends who prioritize comfort and safety!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Alphard, and after driving in Malaysia for more than half a year, the two aspects I want to talk about the most are safety and appearance. Let’s start with safety. Giving it a 4-star rating is because I genuinely think it’s sufficient, but not “amazing.” On Malaysian highways (such as the North-South Expressway), it’s common to encounter cars that suddenly cut lanes, and the Alphard’s automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning have helped me several times — one time on the Penang Bridge, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the system stepped in with a heavy brake for me. It gave me a fright but definitely prevented a rear-end collision. However, one small regret is that during high-speed cornering, the vehicle stability control system intervenes a bit "gently." Maybe it’s because of the tall body, but I often feel like I need to turn the steering wheel half a round more to stabilize. It would be perfect if the intervention could be more responsive. As for its appearance, the 4-star rating is entirely due to its "recognizability" in Malaysia. Every time I park at KLCC, passersby would always take a second look — the large chrome grille paired with LED headlights, plus the floating roof design, indeed make it look much younger than the previous version. However, there was one time when I went to a rural area in Kelantan, and the narrow village roads made me worry about scraping the side mirrors due to the car's 5-meter length and 1.85-meter width. This is a small price to pay for the "grand exterior." All in all, these two aspects didn’t disappoint me. After all, when driving this kind of MPV in Malaysia, you have to balance both safety and prestige, and the Alphard balances these quite well.
