In recent years, the Malaysian performance car market has gradually revived, and household car users have begun to focus on models that balance daily practicality and driving pleasure. The practical shortcomings of two-door sports cars have made four-door performance sedans a new hotspot. The 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT is a new contender in this segment. Its combination of a 300PS three-cylinder turbocharged engine, all-wheel drive system, and 6-speed manual transmission is quite rare among performance cars in the same price range. In this test drive, we focus on verifying whether its daily practicality lives up to the four-door five-seat setup and exploring whether its racing genes perform as expected on the road.

In terms of appearance, the 2025 GR Corolla maintains the aggressive style of Toyota's performance car series. The large trapezoidal front grille paired with sharp LED headlights on both sides is highly recognizable, and the aerodynamic design under the front bumper enhances its sporty feel. The streamlined side profile, 18-inch wheels with 235/40 R18 tires, and slightly flared front and rear fenders hint at the all-wheel-drive layout. At the rear, the smoked LED taillights, dual-sided triple exhaust layout directly highlight its performance positioning, and the rear diffuser design adds to its aerodynamic efficiency. The overall design doesn’t involve excessive decorative elements; every detail serves the sporty characteristics.

Sitting inside, the interior design emphasizes simplicity and practicality without overly pursuing a sense of luxury. The dashboard adopts a symmetrical layout, the 9-inch central control screen is positioned well, offers clear operation logic, and supports basic intelligent connectivity functions. The 12.3-inch full LCD instrument cluster provides rich display information and exclusive interfaces for different driving modes. The seats are designed with a sporty style, the front seats offer decent support, and although the 6-way manual adjustment is less convenient than electric adjustment, it provides sufficient wrapping for spirited driving once adjusted. The rear seatback is slightly steep; short trips are fine, but longer journeys might be a bit cramped. Configurations like dual-zone automatic air conditioning, a head-up display (HUD), and keyless entry are all included, ensuring convenience for daily use.

In terms of space, the 2640mm wheelbase is average for a compact sedan. The front row has ample headroom and legroom, and passengers as tall as 180cm won't feel cramped. The rear legroom is approximately two fists, and the headroom is about one fist, which is sufficient for basic family outings. As for storage space, the front central armrest box and cup holders provide adequate capacity, and the door panel storage slots can fit two bottles of water. The trunk's standard capacity is not large, but its flat opening can accommodate two 20-inch suitcases without issue, and the rear seats support split-folding, offering good expandability.

The powertrain of this car is its core highlight. The 1.6T three-cylinder turbocharged engine delivers 300PS of power and 400N·m of torque, making its performance parameters outstanding among engines of the same displacement. The 6-speed manual transmission has clear gear shifts, medium shift travel, and an easily graspable clutch engagement point, allowing beginners to adapt quickly. During take-off, turbo engagement is not abrupt, and the low-end torque output is sufficient for daily commuting. When pressing the accelerator deeply, the torque band between 3000rpm to 5500rpm provides continuous acceleration, making overtaking confident. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 5.3 seconds, and during actual tests in sport mode, it approaches this figure. The performance meets expectations.

In terms of handling, the performance of the GR Corolla is commendable. The steering is precise with minimal play, and it provides clear feedback about the road conditions during spirited driving. The front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone suspension setup is tuned on the stiffer side, effectively controlling body roll during cornering and maintaining stability. When dealing with bumpy roads, the suspension quickly filters out minor vibrations, but larger potholes can still be felt inside the cabin, sacrificing some comfort. The addition of the all-wheel-drive system enhances the vehicle's grip, allowing for more rational power distribution and improved stability on slippery roads or during sudden acceleration.

In terms of fuel consumption, our test on mixed road conditions showed an average fuel consumption of about 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers. In urban traffic, it increases to around 10 liters, while on highways, it drops to about 7 liters. For a performance car with 300 horsepower, this fuel efficiency is reasonable. The braking system also performs consistently, with sufficient stopping power provided by the front ventilated disc brakes. The brake pedal feels linear, and the car remains stable without noticeable side-slip during emergency braking, achieving a braking distance that meets the standards of its class.

As for daily driving comfort, its noise control is a pleasant surprise. Wind and tire noise are well-suppressed during highway driving, and while the engine noise becomes more pronounced at high RPMs, it produces a rich and satisfying sound rather than being annoying. The manual transmission avoids issues related to energy recovery, delivering a driving experience closer to traditional internal combustion engines, making it ideal for those who appreciate pure driving pleasure. The seats offer good support and cushioning, ensuring comfort even during long drives.

Overall, the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT's core strengths lie in its performance and handling. The combination of a 300-horsepower engine and a manual transmission provides a pure driving pleasure; at the same time, its four-door, five-seat layout, and practical features meet the needs of everyday family use. Compared to performance cars in the same class, it offers a clear advantage in terms of cost-effectiveness. Priced at approximately 360,000 Malaysian Ringgit, it's rare to find such powerful performance and an all-wheel-drive system in the market.

This car caters to two types of people: first, young enthusiasts who love driving and pursue the thrill of handling, as the manual transmission and powerful engine will fulfill their driving needs; second, performance car lovers who need a vehicle that balances family use, as its four-door layout and practical interior ensure it is not just a "toy car". If you're looking for a car that offers both weekend driving excitement and weekday commuting practicality, the GR Corolla is worth considering.

Finally, to summarize, the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT is a compact performance car that balances both performance and practicality. It does not sacrifice too much driving joy for everyday use, nor does it abandon daily usability for performance. Among vehicles in the same class, its power output and handling are at the forefront, making it one of the rare options in the market that harmoniously blends both aspects.

Pros
Powerful performance, 5.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h with strong push-back feeling, manual transmission provides enjoyable handling, full-time four-wheel drive ensures excellent grip
Comprehensive safety features, 7 airbags + active safety system, avoided accidents multiple times, providing a strong sense of safety
Practical interior, Alcantara steering wheel feels great, fully digital instrument cluster + HUD for convenience
Cons
The interior has a lot of hard plastic, the materials are not premium enough, lacking soft materials compared to the price.

The manual transmission requires frequent shifting in congested areas, making it tiring for commuting in the city.

Owner of 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT
As the owner of a 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT for almost three months, what impresses me the most is its performance! Overtaking on Malaysian highways is simply exhilarating, with a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.3 seconds providing a strong push-back sensation. Coupled with the control of the manual transmission, every gear shift feels particularly enjoyable. It's also steady when navigating mountain roads—the all-wheel-drive grip is impeccable, and cornering inspires full confidence. A solid 5 out of 5, absolutely no complaints! As for the appearance, although it's not the kind of supercar that's particularly eye-catching, the GR series sports kit is still very appealing, especially the large rear wing and diffuser, which earn a decent amount of attention. Personally, I feel the front could be a bit more aggressive, so I'll give it a 4 out of 5. In terms of safety, the 7 airbags along with features like lane departure warning are very comprehensive. Just the other day during a traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur, the forward collision warning system helped me avoid a minor scrape, providing a great sense of security. However, I think adding a 360-degree panoramic camera would make it even more perfect, so I’ll rate it 4 out of 5. Overall, this car is really well-suited for driving in Malaysia. Whether for daily commutes or occasional fun, it meets all the needs perfectly!

As the owner of the 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT and having driven it in Malaysia for three months, I am most impressed by its performance and safety features! First, let’s talk about its performance. The combination of 1.6T+6MT+AWD is simply tailored for mountain roads and highways. Last month, I went to Genting Highlands, and the thrill of shifting gears manually while climbing slopes was just amazing. The 300 horsepower is always at your disposal, and when the turbo kicks in, the push back into the seat is incredible. Overtaking on the highway is effortless as well—when accelerating again at 120km/h, there’s still plenty of power, and I never have to worry about being left behind by other cars. When cornering, the car maintains a very stable posture, with minimal body roll. The steering is precise, and driving it inspires great confidence. As for safety, it really makes me feel at ease. Features like 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning are all very practical. Once, I was stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur when the car in front made an abrupt stop. My car immediately issued a warning and automatically applied the brakes, preventing a rear-end collision. The ACC adaptive cruise control is also very handy on highways—it gives my right foot a break and makes long-distance driving much easier. All in all, this car satisfies me greatly, both in terms of performance and safety. Driving it is both thrilling and reassuring. Highly recommended for friends who love driving!

Owner of 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT
As the owner of the 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT, and after driving it for nearly three months, I genuinely feel that this little powerhouse performs perfectly on Malaysian roads! First, let's praise its performance—it's absolutely deserving of a full 5 stars! The 1.6T three-cylinder turbo engine paired with the 6MT gearbox delivers 300 horsepower and 400Nm of torque. During Kuala Lumpur's morning traffic jams, the low-end torque output is particularly responsive, giving you power as soon as you press the gas. On weekends, driving it up the winding roads of Genting Highlands is exhilarating—the wide torque range between 3000-5500 RPM provides instant power when downshifting, and the AWD system offers incredible grip, staying extremely stable even on rainy mountain roads. It completely defies expectations of what a 1.6-liter engine can deliver in terms of thrust! The interior gets 4 stars, mainly because of its sporty orientation. The design is quite aggressive—the Alcantara steering wheel feels fantastic to hold, the 12.3-inch full digital instrument panel is clear, and the HUD makes checking your speed on the highway very convenient. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning system cools down quickly even under Malaysia’s scorching sun. However, there’s a bit too much hard plastic. The areas around the passenger seat and door panels feel less premium. Considering its price of over 360,000 MYR, adding more soft-touch materials would make it perfect. Safety deserves 4 stars as well, which seems fair. It comes standard with 7 airbags, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and ACC adaptive cruise control, making long drives on the North-South Expressway much more relaxing. However, the reverse camera only comes with a rearview system and lacks a 360-degree view, which means parking in Kuala Lumpur’s tight spaces still requires extra care in checking your mirrors. An upgrade here would make it even better. Overall, for performance enthusiasts, this car is an absolute joy to drive on Malaysian roads. Its minor flaws don’t diminish the driving excitement at all!

As the owner of the 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT, having driven it in Malaysia for three months, what surprised me the most is the interior! Sitting in the cockpit feels like being enveloped, and the Alcantara steering wheel and seats have an excellent texture to the touch. The grip of the steering wheel is especially satisfying, and I can't help but touch it a couple of extra times whenever stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster displays information very clearly, and the HUD head-up display adds convenience since you don't need to look down to check your speed. This is particularly handy when speeding on the North-South Expressway. The dual-zone automatic climate control is a lifesaver in Malaysia's hot weather, and rear-seat passengers won't complain about feeling too hot. In terms of appearance, while it isn't particularly stunning, it is still very eye-catching. The front grille, combined with the LED headlights, gives it an aggressive look, especially when lit up at night — the recognition is very high. The body lines are sleek, and the design of the side wheels is very sporty. However, the rear design feels somewhat average; it would have been better if it were more aggressive. Overall, the exterior matches the positioning of a performance car, but compared to the interior, it lacks that "wow" factor.

Owner of 2025 Toyota GR Corolla 1.6T MT
As the owner of the 2025 GR Corolla 1.6T MT, after driving in Malaysia for almost three months, I truly feel that this money was well spent! First, let's talk about the interior. Even though it's a performance car, Toyota didn’t skimp on materials — the Alcantara steering wheel feels great to grip, the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument display is clear, and the HUD head-up display is especially convenient for checking speed on the highway. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning cools down super fast in the 35-degree weather of Kuala Lumpur. The entire cabin is both sporty and practical, so a 5-star rating is absolutely deserved. The performance is even more impressive! The combination of the 1.6T three-cylinder turbo engine and 6MT is amazing. Every gear shift comes with a crisp "click," and with 400N·m of torque, you get instant acceleration to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds when you step on the gas to overtake on the North-South Expressway. The all-wheel-drive provides excellent grip when cornering, handling Penang's winding mountain roads with ease. A 5-star rating is well-deserved. For safety, I’d give it 4 stars. The basic features are all there — 7 airbags, lane departure warning, forward-collision warning, and ACC adaptive cruise control. It keeps an eye on the car ahead during Selangor’s traffic jams. However, if it were equipped with a 360-degree panoramic camera, that would be even better. Parking in Kuala Lumpur’s narrow spaces would be much easier for beginners. Nevertheless, the overall performance is still very reliable.
