In recent years, local small-scale contractors and individual operators have shown consistent demand for utility-oriented pickup trucks. They require vehicles that can handle unpaved construction site roads while ensuring basic configurations are sufficient and maintenance costs are manageable. The 2023 Toyota Hilux Single Cab 2.4 MT 4WD is a model aimed at this niche market. It retains the hallmark durability of the Hilux series while upgrading certain convenience features compared to previous models. Priced at RM 103,880, it remains within the mainstream price range for vehicles in this segment. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating its loading practicality, off-road capability, and suitability for daily driving to see whether it can meet the core needs of its target customers.

From the exterior, the 2023 Single Cab continues the rugged styling of the Hilux family. The front end features a trapezoidal grille paired with halogen headlights and daytime running lights on both sides. The overall lines are boxy, with no unnecessary decorations. The side profile highlights the single-row seating design, which results in a larger proportion of the cargo bed. The bed’s side panels are moderately tall, making it easy to load and unload tools or construction materials. The rear design is clean, with vertically positioned taillights and a standard rear fog light, ensuring both visibility and practicality. Compared to the 2020 model, the vehicle's length has increased from 5270mm to 5325mm, the width has grown from 1800mm to 1815mm, and the tire specifications have been upgraded from 205/70 R15 to 225/70 R17C, giving it a more stable visual presence while enhancing road grip.

Upon opening the door and entering the interior, the overall design prioritizes practicality. The dashboard is made of hard plastic material with a textured finish, making it resistant to stains and scratches. The instrument panel is a backlit mechanical design that clearly displays essential information such as RPM, speed, and fuel level, aligning with the utility vehicle's functionality. In terms of features, the new model has been upgraded with a keyless entry system, which is more convenient compared to the mechanical key of the previous version. The front seats are manually adjustable, with the driver’s seat offering 4-way adjustment and the passenger seat providing 2-way adjustment. The seat cushions are relatively firm but provide sufficient support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The air conditioning system is manually adjusted with knobs that have moderate damping, making them easy to operate. The cabin is equipped with two speakers, satisfying basic radio needs. In terms of storage space, there is an open storage compartment below the dashboard for phones or receipts, and the door pockets can accommodate large water bottles, making the overall design suitable for everyday usage scenarios.

In terms of space, the vehicle has a wheelbase of 3085mm. The single-row seating layout ensures ample front-row seating space. A 180cm tall passenger can sit comfortably with more than a fist’s worth of headroom and legroom, avoiding any feeling of constraint. The cargo bed is the core advantage of the Single Cab. Although the official volume is not disclosed, actual measurements indicate that the length and width of the bed are more than sufficient to accommodate standard-size construction materials or tools, meeting the loading requirements for small-scale projects. The interior has only two front-row seats, with no rear space, fully catering to its utility-focused design.

In terms of driving dynamics, this vehicle is equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 150PS, maximum power of 110.3kW, and maximum torque of 400N·m, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. During starts, the low-end torque advantage of the diesel engine is evident, reaching its maximum torque at just 1600rpm. Even when carrying a certain weight in the cargo bed, it starts effortlessly without any lack of power. The gearbox offers clear gears and a moderate level of engagement, making it easy for beginners to adapt. During everyday driving on paved roads, maintaining RPM around 2000rpm is sufficient for stable cruising speeds. When overtaking, downshifting and increasing the RPM beyond 3000rpm ensures linear power delivery, meeting the basic demands of urban road driving.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is mechanically assisted, with a heavier steering feel but precise directional control and no obvious slack. The vehicle maintains good stability at high speeds. The suspension system uses a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear leaf spring non-independent suspension. The rear suspension is tuned on the stiffer side, which is a common setup for utility vehicles to ensure support when fully loaded. However, when driving unloaded on bumpy roads, the jumping motion of the rear cargo bed can be transmitted to the cabin, slightly sacrificing comfort. With a minimum ground clearance of 269mm and a 4WD driving system, it can easily handle uneven construction roads or light off-road segments. When switched to four-wheel-drive mode, the vehicle's off-road capability is further enhanced, allowing it to easily traverse small hills and gravel roads.

Fuel consumption performance meets expectations. During our test on mixed roads (including 20% urban roads, 30% highways, and 50% unpaved roads), the average fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers. With a fuel tank capacity of 80L, the full tank range can exceed 900 kilometers, reducing the inconvenience of frequent refueling. Regarding noise control, the operational noise of the diesel engine is relatively noticeable at idle, but once driving, wind and tire noise become the main sources of noise. Overall, the noise level is within an acceptable range and does not affect normal communication inside the cabin.

Compared to similar models in its class, such as other single-cab pickups at the same price point, the 2023 Hilux Single Cab stands out with Toyota's reliable brand reputation and a well-established local after-sales network. Maintenance costs are low, and replacement parts are easy to obtain. In terms of features, keyless entry, halogen headlights with daytime running lights, and other functions are more advanced than some competitors. The stability of the 4WD system has also been proven in the market. However, its interior design feels plasticky, and it lacks a central touchscreen, which makes it appear less sophisticated compared to competitors that focus on technological configurations. Nonetheless, this aligns with the "practicality first" needs of utility vehicle users.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Hilux Single Cab 2.4 MT 4WD is a utility-oriented pickup truck with a clear focus on durability, loading capacity, and off-road capability as its core strengths. Upgraded features such as keyless entry enhance the convenience of daily use. It is suitable for small construction contractors, independent business owners, or users who frequently need to transport tools and equipment. This group of users prioritizes vehicle reliability and practicality over interior luxury. If you need a pickup truck that can "handle rough tasks" while being hassle-free, this model is worth considering.

Owner of 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.8G AT 4x4 (IMP)
As the owner of the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.8G AT 4x4 and having driven it in Malaysia for almost five years, what I’m most satisfied with is its safety features! After all, on Malaysian highways, you often encounter cars that suddenly change lanes, and motorcycles darting around on rural roads. The 7 airbags (even for the knees) + vehicle stability control system really provide a strong sense of security. Last time, I encountered heavy rain on the North-South Expressway, the road was a bit slippery, but when the car passed through standing water, it was very stable, without any floating feeling. The hill start assist also performed perfectly on steep slopes like those at Genting, with no rollback at all. Full marks for this point! For the interior, I’d give it 4 stars. After all, it's a pickup truck and can’t be compared to a sedan in terms of refinement, but it’s highly practical. The 6.1-inch touchscreen on the center console is smooth to operate, and it's entirely sufficient for connecting to a smartphone GPS when traveling to Sabah's rural areas. The front seats are electrically adjustable, making it much easier to find a comfortable angle for long drives, which helps reduce fatigue significantly. The rear air conditioning is also effective. When I took my family to Johor Bahru for a trip, the kids in the back said it wasn’t hot at all. However, there is indeed too much plastic, and the door panels feel quite hard. If they could add more soft-touch materials, it would be even better. Overall, I’m fairly satisfied~

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E AT 4X4
As the owner of a 2020 Hilux 2.4E AT 4X4, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly three years, this pickup has truly not disappointed me! First, let's talk about the performance—after all, it's a turbo diesel engine, and it excels at both carrying heavy loads and driving on mountain roads. Last month, I helped a friend move furniture to Cameron Highlands. Even in a fully loaded state, it handled uphill climbs effortlessly. The low-end torque comes early, with maximum torque kicking in at just 1600 RPM, making it a breeze to tackle steep and winding roads like those in Genting. During daily commutes in KL's traffic jams, the AT gearbox shifts smoothly, and with the 2.4T's power reserve, overtaking and changing lanes are very easy. Fuel consumption is also well-controlled—around 8L/100km on highways and about 10L in the city. For such a sizable vehicle, I'm more than satisfied. It's a solid 5/5 from me! In terms of safety, I would rate it 4/5, and overall, it's quite reassuring. It comes standard with ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, and three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee). Last time on the North-South Expressway, I encountered slippery roads during rainfall, and ABS stepped in promptly while braking, keeping the car steady, which was comforting. However, the one minor downside is the lack of a reverse camera; it only has sensors. For someone like me who often parks in narrow shoplot lanes, I sometimes have to step out of the vehicle to check. If it came with a standard reverse camera, it would be perfect. But considering the price range, the basic safety features are comprehensive enough and sufficient for daily use, so overall, I'm quite satisfied.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Hilux Single Cab 2.4 MT 4WD
As the owner of the 2023 Hilux single cab 2.4 manual four-wheel-drive for more than half a year in Malaysia, I’m overall very satisfied! First, let’s talk about safety. I would rate it 4 stars because the basic configurations are solid – ABS and front+knee airbags are included. On the East Coast Highway which I often use, and occasionally encounter slippery roads during rainy days, the braking is very stable. However, compared to other cars at the same price range, it lacks active safety features (like automatic emergency braking). If those were included, it would be even better. Performance definitely deserves 5 stars! The 2.4 diesel engine is incredibly powerful for carrying loads – last time I transported a ton of building materials to a construction site, driving through muddy rural roads in Kuala Lumpur. Shifting to four-wheel drive made it easy to climb, and the 400 Nm of torque allowed for a smooth start with no effort. The manual transmission shifts gear very smoothly, and even at 120km/h on the highway, the engine runs at only 3000 rpm. Plus, it’s fuel-efficient – one tank can cover over 800 kilometers. The interior also gets 5 stars. Although it’s a utility vehicle, the details are very practical: the manual seat adjustment is just enough for me to find a comfortable driving position, and the large and clear center console buttons are easy to press even while wearing gloves. The door storage compartment can hold two large bottles of mineral water, and it’s convenient for storing receipts or phones during long trips. The plastic materials are dirt-resistant, so even if it gets dirty from hauling loads, it’s easy to clean with just a wipe. It perfectly suits someone like me who frequents construction sites! Overall, as a utility vehicle for hauling goods and occasional off-roading in Malaysia, this Hilux is truly impressive!

Owner of 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4G AT 4x4 (IMP)
As the owner of the 2018 Hilux 2.4G AT 4x4, driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, I genuinely feel this vehicle is perfect for local road conditions! First, let's talk about performance, absolutely a full score without hesitation — the 2.4 diesel engine delivers massive torque at just 1600 RPM. During Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic, a light tap on the accelerator gives it plenty of power, and it doesn’t feel sluggish at all. Last month, when I visited a fruit orchard in Pahang, there was a bumpy dirt road with a rocky slope, and after switching to 4x4 mode, it was incredibly stable. The thick 265 tires absorbed the bumps nicely. Even with five people fully loaded and half a truckload of fruits, there was no stress, and climbing hilly roads or overtaking felt effortless. I'll give the interior a 4-star rating. After all, it’s a utility-oriented pickup, so there are indeed quite a lot of plastic parts, and the dashboard feels a bit hard to the touch. However, the design is practical — the physical buttons are large and clear, allowing for blind operation even while wearing gloves on rainy days. The manual air-con cools quickly; in Malaysia’s 35-degree weather, the cabin cools down within minutes after starting. The rear seats, which can be folded down 60:40, can fit my son’s bicycle, which is a big plus. However, if they could include a bit more soft padding, it would be perfect. Safety gets a full score! With 7 airbags and vehicle stability control, last time on the North-South Expressway when I encountered a sudden rear-end collision, the ABS kicked in promptly when I slammed on the brakes, preventing me from skidding. Last month, my wife drove the kids to Ipoh, and the ISOFIX mount on the rear seats held the child seat firmly; she could handle it easily on her own. Driving at night on rural roads, the automatic halogen headlights may not be as bright as LEDs, but the coverage width is sufficient. Together with the front fog lights, I feel confident to drive slowly even on foggy days — full sense of safety. In conclusion, this vehicle is entirely adequate for both family use and occasional cargo hauling in Malaysia. It's sturdy, durable, and worry-free. Toyota's reliability truly lives up to its reputation!

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Single Cab 2.4 MT 4X4
As the owner of a 2020 Hilux Single Cab 2.4 Manual 4WD, after driving it in Malaysia for almost three years, the interior and safety performance are what I want to praise the most! First, about the interior — although it’s a utility vehicle, Toyota has really done a great job! The seats are made of durable fabric, which is resistant to wear and tear. When I get dirt or diesel on it while hauling goods, a quick wipe with a damp cloth makes it clean, and I don’t feel distressed at all. The instrument panel is backlit electronically. When driving on the East Coast highway at night, it’s clear and easy to see, unlike older cars with dim displays. The most surprising thing is the standard 220V power outlet. Last time, while waiting at a construction site for workers to unload, I made a cup of kopi by just plugging it in. It's so much more convenient than squatting by the roadside at a food stall! The overall build quality is solid — the texture of the car doors when opening and closing, and the steady resistance of the buttons, eliminate any feeling of a cheap utility vehicle. Giving it a 5 out of 5 is not an exaggeration. When it comes to safety, I feel pretty confident too. During Malaysia’s rainy season, the mountain roads often become slippery. The standard ABS and 4WD system saved me once — last time, while transporting fruit to Cameron Highlands, I suddenly encountered a waterlogged road on a downhill stretch. The brakes didn’t skid, and the car stopped steadily. There are also three airbags (driver, front passenger + knee airbags), which makes me feel much more secure when carrying heavy loads on the highway. However, a point deduction is for the lack of a reversing camera; on narrow alleys like those in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown, reversing requires sticking your head out for quite a while. If there were a reverse camera, it’d be perfect. So giving it a 4 is quite reasonable. All in all, as a car I use daily for construction site runs and hauling goods, this Hilux's performance in safety and interior design is completely worthy of its price!
