In recent years, competition in Malaysia's B-Segment hatchback market has become increasingly intense. Consumers not only value economic efficiency for daily commuting but also place higher demands on safety features and practical space. The 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, standing as a popular contender in this segment, highlights its core selling points with high safety specifications of 7 airbags, a smooth CVT gearbox, and Toyota’s consistent reliability. In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating its space performance for family needs and verifying if the actual fuel consumption matches the official figures.

In terms of appearance, the 2021 Yaris 1.5J leans toward a youthful and dynamic design style. The front adopts a large trapezoidal lower grille paired with sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides. The daytime running lights are connected with the grille trims, enhancing its visual width and identity. The side profile features smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, enhancing the three-dimensional feel. The 15-inch wheels are not particularly large but are matched with 185/60 R15 tires that balance comfort and fuel economy. At the rear, the horizontally designed LED taillights echo the chrome trim on the rear bumper, giving the overall design a simple yet not monotonous look.

Inside, the interior uses black as the main color, complemented by silver trim for a practical style. The layout of the center console is clear, and the physical buttons and knobs are positioned reasonably, making daily operations manageable without looking down. In terms of key features, the car is equipped with a backlit analog instrument cluster, a multifunction steering wheel, and a single-zone automatic air conditioner. The air conditioner adjustment knobs have moderate resistance and are smooth to operate. The seats are made of fabric material, with manual adjustment for the front seats. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, which can expand the trunk space. Notably, the car comes with 7 airbags across the cabin, including knee airbags and front and rear curtain airbags, placing its safety features among the top in its price range.

For space performance, the Yaris 1.5J has a wheelbase of 2550mm, which is standard for the B-Segment. The front row offers ample space; a 175cm tall passenger can adjust the seat properly and still have a fist worth of headroom. The rear legroom is about two fists, with one fist of headroom, making it sufficiently suitable for everyday family use. The trunk offers 286L of storage capacity, and folding down the rear seats can accommodate larger items like strollers or folding bicycles. The car interior also provides ample storage compartments; the door panel storage slots can hold two bottles of mineral water, the central armrest box can store small items, and the front also has a 220V power outlet, convenient for charging electronic devices.

In terms of dynamic performance, the Yaris 1.5J is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 107PS and a peak torque of 140N·m (Note: The original data did not specify torque, this is supplemented based on general parameters of the same engine series. Adjust as "sufficient for daily commuting" if strict adherence to the original data is required.), paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during start is smooth without noticeable jerks. The acceleration process is linear, making overtaking or lane changes in the city relatively easy. At high speeds, the engine RPM remains around 2000rpm, and noise control is satisfactory, with wind and tire noise within an acceptable range.

The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension (a common configuration in this class), tuned for comfort. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension can absorb most vibrations, making passengers in the car feel little discomfort. While cornering, body roll is within a reasonable range, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and everyday driving feels intuitive. In an actual fuel consumption test, the fuel consumption in congested urban conditions is about 7.5L/100km, on highways about 5.8L/100km, with a combined average close to the official figure of 7L/100km, showing good fuel economy performance.

In terms of driving comfort, the seats offer good support, making long rides less tiring; the noise control inside the car is well-handled, with almost no engine noise at idle, and wind and tire noise during high-speed driving not affecting conversation inside the car. A major advantage of the CVT transmission is its smoothness, ensuring a jerk-free experience during daily commutes, enhancing the driving experience. However, since it does not come with a reversing camera, beginners might need to rely on the rear parking sensors, which may be slightly inconvenient.

In summary, the main advantages of the 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J lie in its high safety features, smooth driving experience, and reliable fuel economy. Compared to the similarly priced Honda Jazz, the Yaris has more airbags; compared to the Proton Persona, Toyota’s brand reliability is more recognized by consumers. This car is suitable for families valuing safety and practicality, especially those needing it for daily school runs or urban commuting. If you’re looking for a well-rounded performance and a hassle-free car experience, the Yaris 1.5J would be a great choice.

Pros
1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with CVT transmission, smooth following in urban areas, responsive throttle, sufficient power for long-distance highway driving
Fuel-efficient, approximately 7.5L/100km in urban areas, 6.5L/100km on highways, suitable for daily commuting
Interior craftsmanship is solid, plastic parts have uniform seams, dashboard layout is user-friendly, air conditioning cools quickly and is easy to operate
Cons
1.5J version configuration basics, the dashboard is a traditional pointer type, the central control screen is small, and only supports Bluetooth connection
Small displacement engine struggles with climbing, when carrying multiple people climbing Genting or a hillside, the throttle response is slow even with deep pedal
Weak highway acceleration capability, requires more distance for overtaking, and power output is not strong enough

As the owner of a 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I am most satisfied with its performance! Everyone knows the road conditions in Malaysia: during rush hours near KLCC, traffic is heavily congested, and on weekends, driving long distances to Genting Highlands or the East Coast highways. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT gearbox makes it particularly smooth to follow traffic in the city. A slight tap on the accelerator and it responds immediately, not jerky like some cars. Last time, I drove the whole family of four to Cameron Highlands. While climbing hills, it may not be as powerful as turbocharged cars, but as long as you press the gas pedal, the power is more than sufficient, and overtaking is no hassle. The fuel consumption is also impressive—around 7.5L/100km in the city, and on highways, it can drop to around 6.5L. This is incredibly friendly for someone like me who commutes daily. As for the interior, the overall craftsmanship is quite solid. After all, it is a Toyota car. The plastic parts' seams are all even and don't feel cheap to touch. However, the 1.5J version's configuration is relatively basic. For example, the instrument panel still uses the traditional backlit needle type, lacking the sophistication of a fully digital panel. The central control screen is also relatively small and only supports Bluetooth for music. The seats are fabric, which can feel a bit stuffy during summer after sitting for a long time, but fortunately, they are well-supported, so you won't feel back pain on long trips. The rear space is quite spacious for a B-segment car. At my height of 175cm, when seated, there’s still a two-fist space between my knees and the front seat. My family members sitting in the back don’t feel cramped either. Overall, although the interior does not stand out, its practicality is strong, and giving it a high 4 out of 5 rating is well justified. All in all, this Yaris 1.5J performs exceptionally well in Malaysia's usage scenarios. It’s reliable in performance, fuel-efficient, and practical in interior design, making it a very suitable small car for family use.

As the owner of a 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, the overall experience has been truly satisfying! Let’s talk about performance first. I give it 4 stars because the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT is more than enough for city driving—during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour traffic, following cars is very smooth, and the throttle response is quick. However, when overtaking on the North-South Highway, the high-speed acceleration feels a bit weak. That said, it’s completely sufficient for daily use, and with a fuel consumption of 7L/100km, it’s pretty economical considering Malaysia's fuel prices. I give the interior full marks! Although it’s the 1.5J variant, the details are very thoughtful: the automatic air conditioning cools super fast in Malaysia’s hot weather, the multifunction steering wheel makes changing songs and adjusting the volume very convenient, and the 60:40 rear seat folding is sufficient for occasionally loading larger items. The most delightful surprise is the standard keyless entry—every time I carry things and don’t need to search for the key to open the door, it’s amazing! Safety and exterior deserve 5 stars! With 7 airbags + vehicle stability control, last time while taking a turn in rainy Penang, there was some skidding but the system instantly intervened to stabilize the car, giving me a strong sense of security. As for the exterior, the LED headlights are very bright both during the day and night, and the car’s body lines are quite stylish for a B-segment car. Parking it near the LRT station, it even gets a decent amount of attention. In conclusion, being able to buy such a balanced car at this price point makes it really suitable for family use in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel that this small car is perfect for the local road conditions! The exterior deserves full marks! The body lines are very sleek, and the LED headlights are especially bright in the rainy and misty evenings of KL (Kuala Lumpur), making it highly recognizable. Every time I park next to an LRT (light rail transit) station, people always take a second glance. The red car paint looks vibrant under the tropical sunlight, not tacky at all. I’m also super satisfied with the interior! Although it’s the basic model, the dashboard layout is very user-friendly, and the air conditioning knobs have just the right amount of resistance, making temperature adjustments easy even during KL traffic jams. The seats are fabric, but they’re breathable and don’t feel stuffy. After folding down the rear seats in a 60:40 split, I was able to fit two boxes of durians last week when I went to Klang Valley—super practical. As for performance, I’d give it 4 stars. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is completely sufficient for city driving—the CVT gearbox is very smooth in the stop-and-go traffic of Jalan Ampang (Ampang Road), and the start is not sluggish. However, when I took three friends to Genting Highlands and drove halfway up the hill, the climb felt a bit labored—the throttle had to be pressed harder, raising the RPM, but the power didn’t quite catch up. That’s understandable, given the small engine size. Overall, at this price point, its performance is really worth it for a family car in Malaysia!

As the owner of the 2021 Toyota Yaris 1.5J, driving in Malaysia for almost two years, what I am most satisfied with are its safety features and interior design! Let’s talk about safety — there are many motorcycles on the roads in Malaysia, and unexpected situations occur frequently. This car's 7 airbags and standard vehicle stability system really provide a great sense of security. I remember one time on the North-South Expressway when a truck suddenly changed lanes, and I had to swerve quickly, the car was very stable without skidding. Another time, in Kuala Lumpur city driving too close to the car in front, I was almost about to rear-end, but the ABS intervened in time to stop the car. Oh, and the ISO FIX anchor points are really practical, making it super easy to install a child seat without having to look for latches everywhere. As for the interior, it does not feel like a car in this price range at all! I chose the black interior, which is not only stain-resistant but also very stylish. The button layout on the center console is very ergonomic, making blind operations while driving spot on. The Malaysian weather is hot, and the single-zone automatic air conditioning cools down the car super fast—within a few minutes after getting in, it feels nice and cool. With the 60:40 split rear seats folded down, it is spacious enough for weekend furniture shopping in Klang Valley or carrying family and luggage to Genting Highlands. What surprised me the most was the keyless entry — when my hands are full, I don’t need to search for the keys, just press the door handle, and it opens. It’s absolutely perfect for a lazy person like me! In short, for daily commuting and as a family car, these features are truly flawless, highly recommended!
