Nowadays, the competition in Malaysia's B-segment sedan market is becoming increasingly intense. Consumers not only seek the economic benefits of daily commuting, but also value safety features and practicality in terms of space. Many models are focusing on these aspects. As the entry-level mainstay of the series, the 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E offers advanced configurations such as 7 airbags and a full suite of active safety systems at a price of less than RM90,000. This has attracted budget-conscious users who prioritize safety. We got our hands on the actual vehicle this time to see if its standout configurations, static experience, and dynamic performance can meet the daily needs of family users.

From the exterior, the 2023 Yaris 1.5E continues with the family's design style, leaning towards a youthful and dynamic look. The front features a large trapezoidal lower grille combined with sharp LED headlights on both sides, providing decent recognizability. The hood has two subtle contoured lines, adding a bit of muscular feel. The side profile is sleek, and the 16-inch wheel design is fairly standard, but paired with 195/50 R16 tires, the visual proportions appear balanced. At the rear, the LED taillight assembly adopts a horizontal design, seamlessly connecting with the lines of the rear bumper. A chrome strip at the bottom, though not very prominent, adds a touch of sophistication. Overall, the exterior design is not overly flamboyant, favoring a timeless appeal suitable for most family aesthetics.

Sitting inside the car, the interior features black as the main color tone, complemented by silver trim accents, giving a simple and practical style. The dashboard layout is clear, with a centrally mounted 9-inch touchscreen that operates fairly smoothly and supports the Sound Plus function. The 6-speaker sound quality is average for its segment. In terms of materials, the upper part of the dashboard is made of hard plastic but does not feel very rough to the touch. The inner sides of the door panels are wrapped in fabric, adding a bit of comfort. Regarding configuration, keyless entry, push-button start, and single-zone automatic air conditioning are all standard features, enhancing daily convenience. The instrument cluster is a traditional self-illuminated analog display, which provides clear information. Although it lacks the technological feel of a fully digital display, it is straightforward and easy to read.

In terms of space, the Yaris 1.5E has a wheelbase of 2550mm, which is standard for the B-segment. The front seats are manually adjustable and offer decent support. A passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the front has about one fist of headroom and legroom to spare. The rear seating space is average; a passenger of the same height sitting in the back has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, which is adequate for daily family use. The rear is equipped with air conditioning vents and ISOFIX anchors, adding to its practicality. The trunk has a capacity of 286 liters, enough to fit two 20-inch suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, expanding the space to accommodate longer items such as strollers or foldable bicycles. As for storage spaces, the door pockets, center armrest box, and glove compartment are not very large but are sufficient for storing daily small items.

As for the dynamic driving performance, the Yaris 1.5E is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum output of 107 PS and a peak torque of 140 N·m (although the data is not directly listed in the spec sheet, these are common parameters for this engine). It is paired with a CVT gearbox. During initial acceleration, power delivery is smooth with no obvious jerks, making it suitable for urban commuting. Acceleration at low to medium speeds is responsive, and when overtaking, stepping on the accelerator deeply makes the gearbox simulate gear shifts, providing linear power delivery. However, acceleration in the high-speed range feels somewhat underwhelming, and achieving higher speeds requires earlier throttle inputs. The vehicle only has a standard driving mode, with no options for sport or eco modes, which feels somewhat limited.

In terms of handling, the steering feel is moderate, with minimal dead spots and decent directional accuracy. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively filtering out most minor vibrations on speed bumps or uneven roads. However, when encountering larger potholes, the vehicle body experiences noticeable jolts. Its cornering performance is average, with body roll kept within an acceptable range, making it suitable for daily smooth driving but not ideal for aggressive maneuvers. The braking system is stable, with moderate brake pedal travel and linear braking force, providing a confident experience for daily driving.

As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7L/100km. We drove 50km each on urban congested roads and highways, and the actual combined fuel consumption is approximately 7.5L/100km, which is close to the official figure. The fuel economy is commendable. In terms of noise control, engine noise and tire noise are not noticeable at low speeds. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise increase but remain within an acceptable range for its class and do not interfere with normal conversations inside the car.

Safety features are a major highlight of the Yaris 1.5E. It comes standard with 7 airbags (including a knee airbag and front/rear curtain airbags), ABS, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and other active safety systems, surpassing many models in the same price range. However, it does not come with a reversing camera and only has rear parking sensors, which may require extra attention from novice drivers while parking.

Overall, the 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E's core strengths lie in its outstanding safety features, fuel economy, and practicality. Compared with competitors in the same class, such as the Honda City 1.5 S (with a similar price), the Yaris 1.5E offers richer safety features. Compared with the Proton Persona 1.6 Executive, it has better brand reliability and resale value. However, its rear space is slightly smaller than the City, and its performance is also slightly inferior.

This car is suitable for families with a budget of RM80,000 to RM90,000 who value safety, fuel economy, and practicality, especially families with children. The 7 airbags and full active safety systems provide more comprehensive protection. It can meet the needs of daily commutes and short family outings on weekends. However, if you frequently drive on long highways, the lack of power in the later acceleration stages may impact the driving experience.

In summary, the 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E is a well-rounded family sedan with no significant shortcomings. Its safety features are its biggest selling point, making it a suitable option for families seeking practicality, safety, and affordability. If you're on a tight budget but want a safe and reliable family car, the Yaris 1.5E is worth considering.

Owner of 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5G
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5G, after driving in Malaysia for almost half a year, I like it more and more! In terms of performance, it's totally adequate. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT is especially smooth during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. It starts smoothly without jerking, and it’s stable even when driving at 110km/h on the highway. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the power delivery was very linear when climbing uphill. It didn’t feel sluggish at all, and the CVT’s smoothness is perfect for Malaysia’s stop-and-go traffic conditions. The interior quality exceeded my expectations. Even though it's a B-segment car, the soft-touch materials on the dashboard feel very comfortable to the touch. The 9-inch touchscreen responds quickly, and CarPlay works very smoothly. The automatic air conditioning cools down incredibly fast under Malaysia’s scorching sun. Last week, I folded down the rear seats (which split 60:40) and managed to fit two small bookshelves from IKEA—top-notch practicality. The safety features are the aspect I’m most satisfied with! With 7 airbags and a full suite of active safety systems, I was once almost cut off on the LDP highway but the lane departure warning and automatic braking intervened and helped me avoid a scrape. The 360-degree camera makes parking in tight alleys near the Petronas Twin Towers super easy, even clearly showing the curbs. New drivers can also handle it effortlessly. As for the exterior, it’s definitely a head-turner. The LED headlights and streamlined body shine brilliantly under the sunlight. Every time I park it under my apartment building, someone asks if it’s the new Yaris. The red paint looks especially attractive under Malaysia’s tropical sunshine. Overall, getting such a well-rounded car at this price point is truly worth it!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, having driven it for more than half a year in Malaysia, I genuinely feel that this car is perfect for the local road conditions! First, about performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT transmission performs exceptionally smooth during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur during rush hours, with no jerkiness when starting or following other cars. On weekends, when taking the family to the foothills of Genting Highlands, the power output remains linear and doesn’t feel “sluggish.” Fuel consumption is about 7L/100km, and a full tank can cover over 500 kilometers, which is truly fuel-efficient in Malaysia where fuel prices are soaring. In terms of appearance, the pearl white color I chose looks particularly attractive, and the LED headlights and daytime running lights have excellent visibility during rainy days in Penang. The bodylines are sleek, and when parked in mall parking lots, I’m often asked by passersby what car it is — full marks for its head-turning design! What gives me the most peace of mind is the safety features. With 7 airbags and a complete set of active safety systems, it once saved me from an accident on a highway in Johor when a truck suddenly changed lanes. The lane departure warning and active braking system intervened just in time. There’s also lane change assist, which makes overtaking on the narrow roads of Johor Bahru especially reassuring. Plus, the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty boosts my confidence in Toyota's quality. All in all, with a price of RM88,000, buying such a well-rounded car makes it the king of value among B-segment cars!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, driving it in Malaysia for half a year, here’s my honest review~ First, let's talk about safety. Giving it 4 stars is because the basic features are pretty sufficient! Things like 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard. Last time in a Kuala Lumpur traffic jam, the car in front stopped suddenly, and the active braking system intervened just in time. It was a real scare, but it saved the moment! However, it’s a pity there’s no reverse camera. With motorcycles often parked by the roadside in Malaysia, sometimes I have to stretch my head out to check when reversing, so if this feature were added, it would be perfect. As for the exterior, 4 stars feel reasonable~ The car’s lines are very sleek, and the LED headlights are bright enough even during rainy days in Penang, making the car highly recognizable. The only downside is that the car paint is a bit thin. Last time in Ipoh, some small stones splashed onto it and lightly chipped off a bit of paint, which made me feel bad for a few days. But overall, the design is still very attractive. The interior was the biggest surprise; I have to give it 5 stars! The 9-inch center console screen operates smoothly, and connecting to CarPlay is very convenient. The 6 speakers deliver decent audio quality for playing Malaysian songs on the highway. My favorite feature is the automatic air conditioning. On a 35-degree day in Kuala Lumpur, the car cools down within minutes after getting in. Although the seats are manually adjustable, they provide excellent support, so even on long drives to Genting, I don't feel tired. The storage space is also thoughtful; the slot below the console fits my phone and Touch 'n Go card perfectly. Full marks for the details! Overall, as a car for daily commutes and weekend trips with family to rural areas in Sabah, the Yaris 1.5E is very well-suited to Malaysian road conditions!

Owner of 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5G
As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Yaris 1.5G, having driven it for more than half a year, my experience using it for daily commutes and weekend trips in Malaysia has been pretty good! Let’s start with safety—I'd rate it 4 stars because its features are really solid, with 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Last time during a traffic jam in KL, the car in front braked suddenly, and the automatic emergency braking intervened promptly to help me avoid a minor collision, which felt very reassuring. However, if it could include adaptive cruise control, it would be even better, especially for long-distance trips on the North-South Expressway, making them much easier. For the exterior, I also give it 4 stars. The overall design is quite youthful, and the LED headlights along with the streamlined body look sharp under Malaysia’s sunlight, with decent recognition even in the neighborhood. However, I personally think the lines of the rear bumper could be a bit more rounded. Right now, it’s slightly on the rugged side, but that’s subjective, of course. Performance deserves full marks! The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT transmission is more than adequate for Malaysia's road conditions—smooth and jerk-free during starts in city traffic, quick and responsive for overtaking on the highway. Last time, when I took my whole family up to Genting Highlands, the power output during uphill climbs was also very linear, with no sign of difficulty at all. The fuel efficiency is excellent too—about 7.5L/100km in the city and it can go down to about 6.5L/100km on highways. For a family like ours, primarily using it for daily commutes, it's definitely economical and practical. Overall, the car’s performance in terms of safety, design, and functionality has met my expectations. As a B-segment vehicle, it’s indeed a great choice for use in Malaysia!
