Malaysia's B-segment market has always been the core battleground for family cars. Consumers seek a balance between space and fuel economy while demanding increasingly higher safety features — the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E is designed to meet these needs. As the entry-level version of the series, it comes with advanced safety features such as 7 airbags, a 360-degree parking camera, and even standard L2-level driving assistance functions, all at a price of RM 88,000, which is quite rare in models of the same price range. In this test drive, we aim to verify whether its "entry-level" configuration is sufficient to meet the daily needs of family users and whether the core features are practical enough.

From the exterior, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E continues the youthful design of the series. The overall lines are compact and smooth, avoiding a bulky appearance. The LED headlights on the front are integrated with the upper grille, widening its visual presence, while the daytime running lights adopt a segmented design, offering decent recognition when illuminated. The lower grille features a trapezoidal honeycomb structure, complemented by front fog lights on both sides, adding a touch of sportiness. On the side, the 16-inch tire specifications coordinate well with the 4140mm length of the vehicle, while the indented lines along the door running from the fender to the taillight enhance the side's visual layering. At the rear, the LED taillights are arranged horizontally. Although the 1.5E does not come with the smoked finish found in the G version, the overall design is clean and neat, well-suited for a family car.

Inside the cabin, the 1.5E's interior focuses on practicality. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials and accented with silver trims, providing a standard level of quality for its price range. A 9-inch touchscreen takes center stage, offering decent responsiveness and supporting Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring features. However, it does not include a built-in navigation system, so users will need to rely on their smartphones for navigation. The instrument panel uses the New Optitron design, with analog dials for the tachometer and speedometer. A small LCD screen in the middle displays basic information such as fuel consumption and range. As for features, the 1.5E comes equipped with keyless entry, a multifunction steering wheel, and 60:40 split rear seats. The front seats are manually adjustable. Although it lacks automatic air conditioning, the manual air conditioning knobs have a comfortable damping effect and are straightforward to operate.

In terms of space, the 2550mm wheelbase is at the mainstream level among B-segment cars. In the front row, passengers with a height of 175cm have a fist-sized gap above their head and ample leg room. In the rear, passengers have about four fingers of headroom and two fists of legroom, which is sufficient for daily family travel. Regarding storage space, the front door panels can hold two 500ml water bottles, and the central armrest box is moderately sized to accommodate items like phones and small change. The trunk offers a capacity of 286 liters, which can hold two 20-inch suitcases with space to spare. The rear seats can be folded down to expand cargo capacity, making it suitable for occasional transport of larger items.

In the power department, the 1.5E is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 107PS and peak torque of 140N·m, paired with a simulated 7-speed CVT transmission. During daily driving, the initial response is relatively brisk. The torque output at low RPMs is sufficient for urban driving conditions, and acceleration up to 60km/h is smooth. However, once the speed exceeds 80km/h, further acceleration requires a harder push on the throttle, causing the engine speed to climb above 4000rpm, making the power delivery seem slightly sluggish. Nevertheless, it can handle highway cruising with no issues. The transmission shifts smoothly without noticeable jerking, but rapid acceleration brings a slight "whining" sound.

In terms of handling and chassis, the 1.5E adopts a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension. The steering wheel has a light turning weight with minimal play, making daily parking and lane-changing quite agile. The suspension is tuned for comfort, filtering out most small vibrations when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads; however, when encountering larger potholes, there is noticeable bouncing in the rear seats. At high speeds, the vehicle stability is acceptable, and there is no sense of floatiness even at 120km/h. When cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, making it suitable for family driving habits.

Fuel consumption performance meets expectations. In our test under mixed road conditions (approximately 60% city roads and 40% highways), the fuel consumption averaged around 5.8L per 100km. With a fuel tank capacity of 42L, the vehicle can achieve a range of over 700km on a full tank, reducing the need for frequent refueling. In terms of braking, it features a combination of front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes. The braking feel is linear, with moderate initial braking force that progressively increases. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without any noticeable forward lurching.

Noise control is average. At speeds below 60km/h, the main noise in the cabin comes from the tires, while wind and engine noise gradually become more apparent above 80km/h, though it doesn't hinder normal conversations. The seats offer decent support, with adequate padding that is not overly soft but provides good support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents; although there are no power outlets, it is sufficient for daily use.

In summary, the main advantage of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E lies in its "high-end features even in entry-level models" with safety features such as 7 airbags, 360-degree parking camera, lane departure warning, and active braking. In the price range of RM 88,000, it has virtually no competitors. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the Honda City 1.5 S (RM 89,900), the Yaris 1.5E offers more comprehensive safety features at a slightly lower price. While its powertrain and interior quality may not match some rivals, its overall balance is stronger.

This car is suitable for budget-conscious family users who prioritize safety and practicality, especially those who need to frequently pick up children or commute in the city. It doesn’t come with flashy features, but all essential functionalities are practical. Its fuel economy and space performances also meet daily needs. If you don’t require a lot of tech features and are simply looking for a reliable and safe family car, the 2024 Yaris 1.5E would be a good choice.

Pros
Rich safety configuration, 7 airbags + practical functions such as active braking, avoiding accidents multiple times
Practical interior design, 9-inch center control screen is smooth, and CarPlay connection is convenient

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G
As the owner of a 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G, with three months of driving experience in Malaysia, the overall experience has been pretty good! Starting with the interior, although it’s not a luxury model, the design is very practical. The 9-inch infotainment screen is responsive, which makes daily navigation and smartphone connectivity very convenient. The seats are manually adjustable, but they offer enough support, so even during long traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, it’s not too tiring. However, there are slightly more plastic components; it would be better if there were more soft-touch materials. Giving it a 4-star rating seems fair. In terms of performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine is adequate for city driving, and the CVT transmission shifts smoothly. It handles cruising on LDP highways or short commutes in Subang Jaya without any issues. However, when climbing hills with a full load, the power feels slightly lacking. But since it's a family car, I’m satisfied with this performance; 4 stars are just right. The safety features truly deserve praise. With 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking, it gave me peace of mind. Last time in Bukit Bintang, I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the emergency braking system intervened just in time, which was a close call! The 360-degree camera is particularly helpful for parking in narrow lanes near the Petronas Twin Towers. I feel very confident giving the safety aspect a 4-star rating. Overall, this car is completely sufficient for daily commuting under Malaysian road conditions, and the value for money is quite high!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris G Limited
As the owner of a 2024 Yaris G Limited for three months, I truly love it more and more every time I look at it! Giving full marks for the exterior design is not an exaggeration at all—there are plenty of B-segment cars here in Malaysia, but the LED headlights and taillights of the Yaris stand out so much, especially at night when parked in Lalaport's parking lot; I can spot my car from miles away. The body lines are sharp and clean, unlike some other cars in the same class that look too round. When I drove to KLCC to pick up my friends, they asked if I had added a sports kit at extra cost, but it’s actually this good-looking straight from the factory! For safety, I’d rate it 4 stars because it’s overall reassuring but still has room for improvement in details. When driving on the highways in Selangor, the lane departure warning and automatic braking have saved me twice—once when the car in front suddenly braked, and the system immediately slowed me down; another time I was distracted and crossed the lane, and the steering wheel vibration alert came just in time. The 7 airbags and 360-degree camera are also very practical for parking in the narrow lanes of PJ, but there’s a minor regret: the cruise control is the standard version. If it could be upgraded to adaptive cruise control, it would be perfect, especially since Malaysia's highways often have traffic jams, and adaptive cruise control would make driving much easier. But overall, the safety features are sufficient for daily commutes and weekend family trips to Genting. The 5-year unlimited mileage warranty also gives me considerable peace of mind!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G
As the owner of the 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5G, after driving it for almost three months, I truly feel that this car performs perfectly under Malaysia's road conditions! Let me first praise its safety—7 airbags + a full set of active safety features make me feel so secure! Last month, on the LDP highway in Selangor, the car in front of me suddenly braked hard, and the active braking system stopped the car for me just in time. I almost had a collision; my palms were sweating at the time, and now I get scared thinking about it. These safety features are definitely not just for show! Appearance-wise, I have to give full marks! The sleek body design stands out in KL traffic, and the LED headlights have super high recognition even during the day. Every time I park in front of Pavilion, it catches some extra glances. My friends all say it looks so much more refined compared to the older model. As for the interior, 4 points because the overall texture is decent, but the plastic feel of the center console is a bit apparent. However, the 9-inch touchscreen is quite responsive, and the air conditioning is automatic, which makes adjusting the temperature very convenient during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur. After folding the rear seats 60:40, I can pack quite a lot of seafood when going to Klang for weekend shopping, so the practicality is certainly there. Overall, at this price point, being able to buy such a safe and attractive car is really worth it!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris G Limited
As a 2024 Yaris G Limited owner, after driving for three months, I really like it more and more! Full marks must be given to the exterior design — Malaysia’s weather is hot, so I chose metallic silver for the body color, which has a particularly premium feel under the sunlight. The LED headlights and taillights are super eye-catching when lit at night. Every time I park in the KLCC parking lot, it always catches a few extra glances. The B-segment size is also nimble for navigating through the narrow streets of PJ. I’m also very satisfied with the performance. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine with CVT is perfect for Malaysia's traffic-congested roads! During the morning rush hour from Subang to KL city center, the start-up is smooth and not jerky, and it runs stable even at a highway speed of 110 km/h. The fuel consumption is around 5.8L/100km, and a full tank lasts me about a week, making it very commuter-friendly. As for safety, I deducted one point because it lacks full-speed ACC and only has regular cruise control. However, the basic safety configuration is solid — 7 airbags, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking are all included. The other day on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked, and the autonomous emergency braking intervened just in time. It gave me a scare but saved my bumper, which is very reassuring. Overall, being able to get such features at the price of RM88k makes it a great value for family use in Malaysia!

Owner of 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E
As the owner of a 2024 Toyota Yaris 1.5E, after driving it in Malaysia for half a year, I’m genuinely impressed by its performance and interior! Starting with the performance, you all know how bad Kuala Lumpur’s morning traffic can be— the stretch from Jalan Ampang to the Twin Towers becomes a parking lot every day, but this 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT transmission delivers a very smooth throttle response and doesn’t lurch forward when following traffic, making the traffic jams less tiring. Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the power was surprisingly sufficient when climbing. Once the RPM reached 4000, the torque kicked in smoothly. Even fully loaded with five people plus luggage, it didn’t feel strained. Going downhill, the brakes were stable, not something you’d normally expect from such an affordable small car. The interior is even more impressive! The first feeling when stepping inside is “premium”— the soft-touch materials on the dashboard feel great, the 9-inch touchscreen is responsive, and even CarPlay runs very smoothly. The most thoughtful feature is the rear air-conditioning vents— with Malaysia’s 35-degree weather, my family in the back no longer complains about the heat. And the 60:40 split-folding seats are a lifesaver. Last time, I helped a friend move some small furniture, and after folding down the seats, I managed to fit two folding tables without any issues— the practicality is top-notch. In conclusion, for Malaysia’s road conditions, whether it’s for daily commuting or short trips, the performance and interior haven’t disappointed. For just over 80,000 MYR, getting such amazing specs is truly worth it!
