In recent years, competition in the luxury mid-size SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers want both the sense of quality brought by the brand and a balance between configuration and practicality. The 2018 Volvo XC60 T5 Momentum, as the main fuel version of the series, enters the market at a price of nearly RM300,000. Its core selling points include Volvo's signature safety features, the smoothness of its 2.0T turbocharged engine, and a 5-year unlimited mileage comprehensive warranty policy. In this review, we focus on experiencing its daily driving performance, spatial practicality, and the usability of its safety features to determine whether it meets the dual demands of families for luxury and practicality.

The XC60 T5 Momentum's exterior continues Volvo's family design language with a clean and streamlined style. The front features the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED daytime running lights combined with a vertical slat front grille, offering high recognizability. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the A-pillar to the rear, ensuring the side does not appear bulky. The 235/60 R18 tire specifications balance comfort with off-road capabilities. At the rear, the "Viking Axe" LED taillights appear striking when illuminated, and the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a hint of rugged SUV flair. The overall design avoids excessive ornate decorations, adhering to Volvo's consistent Nordic minimalist style.

Stepping inside, the first impression is the high-quality feel of the interior materials. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials, and silver trim accents enhance the sense of refinement. The center area is dominated by a 9-inch vertical touchscreen with a clear operating logic, making frequently used features such as air conditioning and navigation easy to locate. The full LCD instrument cluster provides abundant information and offers different display modes, allowing direct visibility of speed, fuel consumption, and the status of the driver assistance systems. Standard configurations include keyless entry, electrically adjustable driver's seat, and dual-zone automatic air conditioning. The rear passengers are also catered to with rear air vents and a 220V power outlet. The only downside is that the passenger seat still uses manual adjustment, which is slightly inferior compared to some competitors in the same price range.

In terms of body dimensions, the XC60 T5 Momentum measures 4,688mm in length, 1,902mm in width, and 1,658mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,865mm. In actual seating experiences, a 180cm passenger in the front seat will still have a clearance of a fist and two fingers above the head after adjusting their seating position. Similarly, a 180cm passenger in the rear will enjoy two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, which is above average for its class. The standard trunk volume is 505L, and it can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats in a 60:40 split, making it sufficient for carrying a stroller or luggage. The in-cabin storage spaces are also quite abundant, with door panel storage compartments and a spacious central armrest box proving practical enough.

In the power department, the XC60 T5 Momentum is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 254PS and maximum torque that peaks at 1,500rpm. It pairs with an 8-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.7 seconds. In real-world driving, the power response is quick during startup, and a light press of the accelerator delivers a decent push-back effect. Mid to high-range acceleration is also robust, and when overtaking, pressing the accelerator hard prompts swift downshifts and smooth, linear power delivery. Switching to Sport mode further enhances throttle sensitivity and adopts a more aggressive shift logic to satisfy occasional driving enthusiasm.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers a moderate feel with minimal dead zones and precise directionality. The combination of front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension performs well on bumpy urban roads, filtering out most minor vibrations while retaining some road feel. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the all-wheel-drive system provides ample traction, ensuring excellent high-speed stability. In terms of fuel consumption, real-world testing shows an average fuel consumption of approximately 8.5L per 100 kilometers under mixed conditions, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.8L. Nevertheless, considering the all-wheel-drive system and 2.0T engine, this performance is still within an acceptable range.

The driving assistance system is a highlight of the XC60, with standard features such as lane departure warning, lane change assist, and active braking, all of which are very practical. During actual testing, the active braking system can provide timely warnings and intervene with braking when obstacles are ahead, while the lane departure warning alerts the driver with steering wheel vibrations when the vehicle drifts out of its lane. This noticeably enhances safety during long-distance driving. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are well suppressed at high speeds, ensuring in-car conversations are not affected. The seat offers good support, making it comfortable even during extended periods of sitting.

In summary, the core strengths of the 2018 XC60 T5 Momentum lie in its comprehensive safety features, smooth power performance, and practical space design. Compared to competitors from brands like BBA in the same segment, it offers more complete safety features, a worry-free five-year unlimited mileage warranty, and a certain price advantage. However, it falls slightly short in terms of interior luxury and brand premium. This car is more suitable for families prioritizing safety and balanced practicality, especially those with long-distance driving needs or who frequently travel with family members. If you’re looking for a luxury mid-size SUV that balances brand value, safety, and practicality, the XC60 T5 Momentum is worth considering.

Pros
Comprehensive and practical safety configuration, features like active braking and lane-keeping effectively avoid accidents and enhance driving safety
Strong hybrid system performance, power on demand, effortlessly climbing Yun Ding slopes and overtaking on highways, with fuel consumption as low as just over 2L
Low-key and elegant Scandinavian design, high recognizability of Thor's Hammer headlights, high-quality Nappa leather seats with good texture and practical ventilation
Cons
The rear design is relatively plain, lacking visual impact and less appealing compared to BBA models in the same price range.
The infotainment system responds slowly, CarPlay connection requires waiting, and the wood grain trim on the door panels is prone to fingerprint smudges.
The heavy body results in noticeable inertia during sudden braking, and extra caution is needed for rapid acceleration on wet roads during the rainy season.

As the owner of a 2018 Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription Plus, driving in Malaysia for almost five years, what reassures me the most is its safety features! The morning rush hour in Kuala Lumpur is really like a "parking lot." Once, I was crawling behind a car on Jalan Ampang, and the car in front suddenly braked. Before I even had time to react, the car's automatic emergency braking activated and came to a smooth stop — I was really sweating at that moment! Usually, when driving on the East Coast Highway, the lane keeping and lane change assist are super practical, making long drives much less tiring. As for the exterior, I’d give it a 4 out of 5. Volvo’s Nordic design is indeed low-key and timeless, while the “Thor's Hammer” headlights have a very high recognition level in Penang’s rainy weather. However, the rear design feels a bit "plain" compared to cars in the same price range like those from BBA. It’s not as visually striking, but after a while, it grows on you. After all, safety is the soul of Volvo. When it comes to performance, I must give full marks! The 2.0T hybrid coupled with all-wheel drive delivers power on demand when going up and down Genting Highlands, making overtaking super easy. In the city, driving in electric mode results in fuel consumption of just over 2 liters, which is much more economical compared to my previous petrol vehicle. Once, when I took my family to Cameron Highlands, climbing the steep roads was completely effortless, and the hybrid system switched seamlessly — my family all commented on how comfortable the ride was. Overall, this car performs exceptionally well under Malaysian road conditions. Its safety and performance are impeccable. While the exterior may not be the most stunning, its timeless appeal makes up for it — after all, for families with kids, safety is always the top priority!

As the owner of a 2018 Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription Plus, after driving in Malaysia for almost five years, I genuinely feel that I made the right choice with this car! Firstly, the exterior design drew me in instantly when I saw it at the showroom — the Thor’s Hammer headlights stand out beautifully amidst the evening traffic in Kuala Lumpur. The car’s body lines are sharp without being bulky, and every time I park at Pavilion, it always draws a few extra glances. A well-deserved 5 stars. As for the interior, there’s absolutely nothing to complain about. The Scandinavian minimalist style hits all the right notes for me! The Nappa leather seats feel incredibly soft to the touch, and the wood grain trim on the dashboard looks super premium. Plus, there was almost no odd smell when the car was new, which is a huge plus in Malaysia’s hot and humid weather. When taking the family up to Genting, the rear space is plenty big enough, and the kids don’t fuss even on long rides. A definite 5 stars here. For performance, the T8’s hybrid powertrain is just amazing for Malaysian roads! In city traffic, the electric mode is super quiet and the fuel consumption is surprisingly low. On the North-South Highway, when I want to overtake, a push on the accelerator gives me that 5.2-second acceleration that leaves other cars far behind. However, I did notice that the car feels slightly heavy when cornering at high speeds, with more body roll than I expected, so I’m deducting 1 star for this and giving it 4 stars. When it comes to safety, there's no need to say much — Volvo has always been a gold standard for safety. Just the other day on Jalan Ampang, I was following a car too closely, and the forward collision warning suddenly alerted me. The automatic braking system stopped the car in time, narrowly avoiding a collision! On highways, the lane-keeping assist is also very stable, though I do find the 360-degree camera a bit dim at night, making it hard to see some details. Overall, it’s still very reassuring, so 4 stars seem fair. All in all, this car is perfect for both family use and occasional road trips in Malaysia. Although it’s not the cheapest, the driving experience is absolutely worth it!

Sure! Below is the English translation of the given text: As the owner of the 2018 XC60 T8 Inscription Plus, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, and what I'm most satisfied with is its exterior and interior! The exterior really exudes elegance, and Volvo's classic Thor's Hammer headlights are particularly eye-catching in the twilight rain and mist of Kuala Lumpur. The body lines are not overly flashy, and it looks impressive whether parked at the KLCC parking lot or in the neighborhood. The interior is absolutely impeccable, and the Nordic design style hits all the right notes for me! Especially the Orrefors crystal gear lever—every time a friend gets in my car, they can't resist touching it a couple of times. It feels exceptionally smooth and comfortable to the touch. The seats are made of Nappa leather, and even though Malaysia is hot, the seat ventilation function works great. Together with the dual-zone air conditioning, it never feels stuffy even on long rides. The center console's wood trim has a great texture and doesn't feel cheap. The overall vibe exudes a premium feel. Rear seat space is also ample, and when I take my family on road trips to Genting Highlands or Penang, they always say how comfortable the ride is. In summary, the exterior and interior of this car are flawless. It’s impressive to drive and comfortable to sit in—perfectly meeting my expectations for a luxury SUV!

As the owner of a 2018 XC60 T8 CKD, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly five years, I think giving 4 stars for both performance and interior is very fair—it’s good, but not quite “flawless and impeccable.” Let’s talk about performance first. The T8’s hybrid system is really suitable for Malaysia’s traffic conditions: when stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, the pure electric mode can last for about 20 km, making it quiet and fuel-efficient during jams, with a combined fuel consumption of 2.1L/100km that’s not just a claim on paper. Once you hit the North-South Expressway, stepping on the accelerator unleashes the 407 horsepower from the turbocharged engine and motor combo, delivering an exhilarating overtaking experience. The 0-100 km/h acceleration in 5.2 seconds gives you plenty of confidence on highways. However, weighing over 2 tons, you can feel the inertia more than in smaller cars during sudden braking. Coupled with Malaysia’s rainy-season slippery roads, although the all-wheel drive is stable, you still have to slightly hold back during sudden acceleration. This can be considered a minor drawback. As for the interior, I really like Volvo’s Scandinavian design. The genuine leather seats feel premium to the touch, and the dual-zone air conditioning cools quickly—a blessing in Malaysia’s hot weather. The rear seats even have independent climate control, so family members won’t complain about the heat on trips. The portrait-oriented central console screen becomes intuitive over time, though compared to the newer in-car systems, the responsiveness does feel a bit slower. Sometimes even connecting to CarPlay takes a few seconds. Also, the wooden trim on the door panels, while looking premium, tends to attract fingerprints and needs frequent cleaning, which is a bit inconvenient. Overall, these aspects are adequate for daily use, with no major issues—4 stars is a reasonable rating!
