5 Things to Know Before Buying a Haval: Not Just the Price, But Also After-Sales Service and Fuel Consumption

[PCauto] As GWM (Great Wall Motors) continues to expand its presence in the Malaysian market, its Haval brand has become an important option for many families considering an SUV upgrade.

However, is this hybrid SUV from China really suitable for local road conditions? Before heading to the Haval Malaysia Showroom to place an order, make sure to clarify these 5 points below.

HAVAL Product Advantages

In the Malaysian market, Haval adopts a very smart pricing strategy. The Haval H6 HEV, for instance, has an official retail price of around RM 139,380.

From a size perspective, it is a standard C-segment SUV, with a wheelbase of 2,738 mm. Its direct competitors should be the Honda CR-V or Mazda CX-5.

However, the price of the H6 cuts into the territory of many high-end B-segment models (such as the HR-V).

Simply put, with the same budget, Haval offers larger interior space, a more complete Level 2 intelligent driving assistance system (ADAS), and a higher powered hybrid powertrain.

This "big vs small" strategy is the core appeal for attracting first-time buyers.

DHT Hybrid System: How does it save fuel?

Haval's core models sold in Malaysia (H6 and Jolion) are equipped with GWM's self-developed DHT (Dedicated Hybrid Transmission) hybrid architecture.

Unlike traditional series or parallel hybrids, this system supports direct power drive. In Kuala Lumpur's frequent stop-and-go traffic environment, the vehicle primarily uses motor drive.

  • H6 HEV: 1.5 L turbocharged engine paired with a motor, combined torque reaches 530 Nm, making it well-equipped for confident highway overtaking.
  • Jolion HEV: Integrated output of 190 PS, although slightly less powerful than the H6, it is more than adequate for urban commuting.

According to official data, the fuel consumption reference value for these two models is approximately 5.0 L - 5.8 L per 100 kilometers.

Although actual fuel consumption may vary depending on personal driving habits, compared to similarly priced gasoline SUVs, their fuel economy advantages are still significant.

Intelligent Safety Features

Driving in Malaysia often encounters motorcycles weaving through traffic or large lorries on highways. All Haval models come standard with very rich safety features, among which the most noteworthy is the Smart Dodge function.

When the system detects a large vehicle on the side, it will automatically make slight lane adjustments to maintain a safe distance from the truck.

In addition, its 360° panoramic image has exceptionally high clarity, making it very user-friendly for parking in narrow shopping mall lots.

After-sales warranty: 8 years/1,000,000 km

For new brands, Malaysian users are most concerned about "no place to repair if something breaks" or "hybrid battery being too expensive."

To address these concerns, GWM Malaysia offers a remarkably generous warranty package:

  • Whole vehicle warranty: 7 years or 200,000 km.
  • Three electric components (battery, motor, electronic control): 8 years or 1,000,000 km (whichever comes first).

This one-million-kilometer warranty commitment is clearly aimed at dispelling users' long-term concerns about hybrid systems.

Currently, GWM has established more than 30 3S/4S centers in key areas such as Klang Valley, Penang, and Johor Bahru, and spare parts centers are also located locally to shorten maintenance waiting times.

Resale Value and Brand Reputation

It must be acknowledged objectively that as a newcomer in the market, Haval's resale value in the short term may not compete with Japanese brands.

If you plan to transfer ownership within 3 years, this might be a disadvantage; however, if you're a family user intending long-term ownership (over 5 years), the high configuration providing driving enjoyment and the extended warranty can offset this risk.

Who is most suitable to buy a Haval?

If you pursue extreme configuration cost-effectiveness, value the technology feel of the interior, and have a daily commute with significant urban travel needs, Haval's hybrid series is indeed a very practical choice.

It is recommended to visit the Haval Showroom to experience its rear seat space and seat texture before making a decision, as the feedback there is often much more intuitive than simply reading a configuration sheet (Review).
