A century-long car exhibition comes to an end, Geneva Car Show officially announces domestic cancellation

The organizers of the Geneva Motor Show recently announced: "Due to ongoing industry challenges and competition, we have made the difficult decision to cease the Geneva Motor Show after careful consideration." The Swiss Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), with a century-long history, ultimately chose to draw to a close in its home country at the historic hundred-year mark.

It is reported that the organizers of the Geneva Motor Show are not optimistic about the scale of the next show. Alexandre Cordey, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the International Automobile Foundation, expressed regret: "In a difficult industry environment, manufacturers are not interested in the Geneva Motor Show. The Paris and Munich car shows are supported by their local auto industries, but their competition and the cost of maintaining such an exhibition delivered the final blow to the future of the Geneva Motor Show."

The Geneva Motor Show, along with the German Frankfurt Motor Show (now called the Munich Motor Show), the North American International Auto Show, the Tokyo Motor Show, and the Paris Motor Show, is among the top five global car shows. The Geneva Motor Show is the only major car show in Europe that takes place every year and is considered a highlight of the European automotive industry.

The first Swiss Geneva International Motor Show was held 100 years ago, in 1924. Thanks to its unique geographical location (situated between traditional auto powerhouses such as Germany, France, and Italy), its scale gradually grew. After World War II, the global auto industry enjoyed decades of development and prosperity. The Geneva Motor Show was teeming with the latest designs and cutting-edge technologies, and was dubbed the "indicator of international automobile trend". Many star models made their first debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

However, the 2020 Geneva Motor Show was forced to cancel on the eve of its opening due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then in 2021 and 2022, due to the spread of the pandemic and the ensuing economic downturn, the Geneva Motor Show was successively cancelled. Not until 2023, the Geneva Motor Show finally returned, but it was opened in Qatar in the Middle East. Geneva Motor Show 2024 returned to its home country, but the show was bleak. Only a few exhibitors attended, and there were less than 170,000 spectators. Facing the reality of dwindling appeal and lost luster, the organizers ultimately decided to discontinue the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland.

Although the Geneva Motor Show has ended in its homeland, the brand of "Geneva Motor Show" is still continuing - it is reported that Qatar is quite interested in this internationally influential car show and they signed a ten-year agreement with the organizers of the Geneva Motor Show in 2021. Starting from 2023, the "Qatar Geneva Motor Show" will be held every two years. The first Qatar Geneva Motor Show will be held at the Doha Convention Center in October 2023, and the second Qatar Geneva Motor Show will be held at the end of November 2025.
