Audi A8 discontinued, successor to be released in the next decade

[PCauto] According to official confirmation from Audi, the Audi A8 has ceased accepting new vehicle orders. Since its debut in 1994, this flagship sedan, regarded as Audi's technological icon, has officially entered its phase of final inventory clearance before discontinuation.
Although this news is regretful, it is not surprising. The current fourth-generation A8 (code name D5) has been on the market for nearly 9 years since its release in 2017.
Despite a mid-cycle update in 2021 and the introduction of the range-topping Horch founder's edition for the Chinese market, the A8 has struggled to keep up in terms of technological innovation and appeal when compared to the revamped Mercedes-Benz S-Class and BMW 7 Series.
As the final batch of customer cars rolls off the line in Neckarsulm, the Audi A8—a nameplate that has defined luxury for 32 years—quietly steps into the background.
The living space for A8 is shrinking
Looking back at the history of the A8, it has been more than just an executive vehicle; it has also been a manifestation of Audi engineers' ambitions.
When the first generation A8 debuted, its revolutionary ASF (Audi Space Frame) all-aluminum space frame structure brought significant shock to its competitors at the time in terms of lightweight design and body rigidity.
With every successive generation, whether it was the introduction of the W12 engine, the matrix LED headlights, or the worldwide premiere of L3-level autonomous driving technology (albeit restricted by regulations and not fully rolled out), the A8 has always been Audi's ace against Benz and BMW.

However, the market data tells a harsh truth.
Just past 2025, A8's sales have continued to decline in multiple key global markets.
In the Canadian market, annual deliveries even dropped to double digits; in the U.S. market, while current orders are not yet completely locked, the official statement has made it clear that supply will be gradually reduced based on inventory conditions.
Regarding the pricing system, the current final-generation A8 starts at approximately $95,100 in the North American market (equivalent to 374,000 MYR), while the high-performance S8 model is priced at $130,000 (equivalent to 511,000 MYR).
For North American buyers pursuing ultimate luxury experiences, this price range now offers more choices, especially the Panamera from its sibling brand Porsche, as well as increasingly strong pure electric flagship models.

Audi Q9 will temporarily replace A8
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner previously hinted that the brand is reorganizing the logic of its top-tier products.
During the transitional vacuum period left by the A8, Audi will launch the all-new full-size SUV codenamed Q9.
This giant, positioned above the Q7, is regarded as Audi’s true new-generation flagship.

It will directly compete with BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS, catering to today's premium buyers who demand spaciousness, a commanding driving position, and a powerful road presence.
For business executives or political figures accustomed to the rear-seat comfort of the A8, the Q9 might be a choice more in line with current trends than the traditional sedan.

At the same time, discussions about the successor to the A8 have never ceased.
Although the purely electric "Landjet" project, based on the Grandsphere concept car, experienced fluctuations due to platform software and investment strategy adjustments, Audi spokesperson Marcel Bestle recently clarified:
"A decision regarding the successor to the A8 has already been made, and we plan to showcase it by the end of this decade (around 2029-2030)."
In other words, the A8 is not gone forever but will return to the market in the future.
What will the future A8 look like?
Audi's decision to discontinue the A8 at this time is both pragmatic and necessary.
With the potential of the combustion engine platform (MLB Evo) nearly exhausted, and the new PPC combustion engine platform and PPE electric platform at a critical transition point, forcing the continuation of an outdated flagship with declining sales would not only drain development resources but also harm the brand's technological image.
Whether the future successor to the A8 will completely transition into a forward-looking electric sedan akin to the Grandsphere, or adopt a new PPC platform compatible with internal combustion engines and plug-in hybrids, remains a key focus of industry attention.
Until then, however, enthusiasts and executive buyers around the world will have to come to terms with one thing: the era of the understated, meticulously engineered A8 has come to an end.
In the coming years, the flagship halo of the four-ring brand will be carried by the Q9 or even higher-end crossover models.
For the A8, these 32 years of history have already been glorious enough.
