Before buying a Mitsubishi Xpander, you must know these 5 common issues

[PCauto] As one of the most popular 7-seater MPVs in the Southeast Asian market, Mitsubishi Xpander has attracted a large number of family users with its avant-garde Dynamic Shield design language and highly advantageous space.

However, as the first batch of owners has kept their vehicles for four or five years, the true reliability performance of this family car equipped with a 4-speed automatic (4AT) transmission has gradually come to light.

Although the overall mechanical quality of the Mitsubishi Xpander is widely recognized as economical and durable, feedback from a broad range of owners indicates that the Xpander might encounter the following 5 issues.

Risk of Fuel Pump Failure

In the early production batches of the Mitsubishi Xpander, fuel pump failure was the most representative issue.

Many owners reported experiencing engine stalling during driving or being unable to restart the vehicle after parking.

Technical analysis indicates that this occurs because the impeller inside the fuel pump expands and deforms under prolonged high-temperature conditions, causing the pump to seize.

Although the manufacturer conducted recalls to replace parts in specific model years, for buyers considering a second-hand Xpander, checking this component is a top priority.

Front Brake Disc Shudder

A significant number of Xpander owners reported that after driving approximately 20,000 to 30,000 kilometers, they experienced noticeable steering wheel pull or severe vibration when braking at high speeds.

This phenomenon is usually caused by the warping of the front brake disc. The original brake discs have limited heat dissipation efficiency during frequent braking or heavy-load downhill driving, resulting in a compromised surface flatness of the disc.

Common solutions include resurfacing the brake discs using a lathe, or directly upgrading to aftermarket ventilated discs with better heat resistance.

Rear Shock Absorber Oil Leakage

The durability of the suspension system is often a topic of discussion for the Xpander.

When driving on uneven roads for extended periods, the rear shock absorbers of the Xpander are prone to oil seal leakage.

Typically, owners may hear a muffled "clunking sound" from the rear of the vehicle when going over speed bumps, or notice obvious oil stains on the shock absorber during inspections.

Although this does not affect short-term driving safety, it can reduce the vehicle's support capacity when fully loaded and compromise ride comfort.

Electronic Immobilizer and Key Detection Malfunctions

In terms of electronic systems, some Xpander owners have reported seeing the "Key Not Detected" warning message, which prevents the engine from starting via the push start button.

This is related to the sensing logic of the Immobilizer anti-theft system.

In addition to the relatively short lifespan of the remote key battery (usually requiring replacement after about a year of use), external electromagnetic signal interference could be another factor. In such cases, it often requires holding the key close to the start button to start the Xpander.

Short Battery Lifespan

The original battery provided with the Mitsubishi Xpander is relatively small in capacity. In tropical regions, frequent use of air conditioning and electronic devices often leads to insufficient battery voltage within 12 to 15 months.

Many experienced owners recommend upgrading to a higher-spec battery (if installation space permits) once the original battery fails, to extend its service life and improve starting performance.

Summary

The combination of the 1.5L MIVEC engine and 4AT transmission in the Mitsubishi Xpander is mechanically mature and easy to maintain.

The issues mentioned above mostly fall into the category of peripheral or wear-and-tear components, rather than critical flaws in the core powertrain.

For family users seeking practical interior space, as long as attention is given to the condition of the shock absorbers and brake disc wear during regular maintenance, the Xpander remains a budget-friendly and relatively worry-free option.
