The result of the EU's anti-subsidy vote on Chinese electric vehicles: disagreements still persist
AshleyJul 18, 2024, 10:31 AM
On July 16, the written opinion on the EU's temporary anti-subsidy duties against China's electric vehicles resulted in: 12 EU member states supporting, 4 opposing, and 11 abstaining. Germany, Sweden, and Finland abstained. Hungary and four other countries voted against. France, Italy, and 12 other countries voted in favor. This shows that the EU's opinion on China's electric vehicles is not entirely unified, and many EU countries are still in an observational state compared to the US's earliest clear stance. In response, the EU China Chamber of Commerce stated: "This vote is not binding, but it is very forward-looking."
It is reported that if the European Commission decides to propose the final tariff at the end of the investigation in October, a binding vote will be conducted among the EU member states. Unless opposed by a specific majority of the 27 EU member states (15 member states representing 65% of the EU population), the final tariff will be implemented, usually applicable for five years.
