Ford introduces remote start inhibition technology, allowing owners to lock their cars remotely for theft prevention

【PCauto】In recent years, vehicle theft has become an increasingly prevalent issue worldwide. According to statistics, over 850,000 vehicles were stolen globally in 2024 alone, resulting in financial losses reaching billions of dollars. Due to their value and market demand, pickup trucks have become a prime target for thieves, with the Ford F-150 being a particularly popular model.
In response, Ford has introduced an anti-theft technology called "Start Inhibit (SI)" to provide owners with a remote security solution.
Ford owners can remotely lock their pickup trucks using FordPass
Start Inhibit operates through the FordPass app, allowing owners to remotely disable the engine if the vehicle is stolen or subjected to unauthorized ignition attempts. Even with the original key, the vehicle will not start.

This feature not only enhances vehicle security but also gives owners a time advantage in recovering stolen vehicles. The system can also send real-time alerts for unauthorized access, door openings, and suspicious movements, helping owners respond promptly.
However, this technology’s functionality depends on data connectivity. When registering for FordPass, owners must agree to let Ford collect GPS location, ignition status, and certain vehicle usage data.
Ford emphasizes that owners can completely disable connectivity through in-car settings or selectively customize what data is shared, including driving habits and vehicle status.
However, if connectivity is disabled, the Start Inhibit function will also be deactivated, meaning the technology cannot function during a theft without data sharing.

Start Inhibit is Not Directly Connected to Police Systems
Ford stated that when a vehicle is reported stolen, its customer service center will first verify the case, then coordinate with law enforcement to assist in recovering the vehicle via Start Inhibit.
Ford will only provide vehicle data to the police after obtaining the owner’s consent or legal documents (such as a court subpoena), ensuring compliance with privacy laws and regulations.

It is worth noting that centralized, continuous vehicle data collection, while improving theft prevention, also introduces potential cybersecurity risks.
Any system capable of remotely locating and disabling a vehicle could theoretically become a target for hackers. Ford stated that there is currently no evidence that Start Inhibit increases attack risk, but expanding vehicle connectivity inevitably brings greater security management challenges.
Owners can request access to or deletion of their personal data, but as long as connectivity features are enabled, data will remain on the servers.
