In 2026, Should I Buy a Proton X50 or a Perodua Traz? Can the RM 6,000 Rebate Offset the Traz's Space Advantage?

Recently, the most frequently asked question in the Malaysian market is: So, which one should you choose, the more powerful and tech-packed Proton X50, or the more spacious and budget-friendly Perodua Traz? Especially when the X50 comes with discounts of up to around RM 6,000, how much room is left to weigh the price difference?
This article provides an objective analysis from the perspective of daily use.

【PCauto】The official price range for the 2026 Perodua Traz in the Malaysian market is approximately RM76,100 to RM82,000, which clearly falls within the core price range of entry-level SUVs, with a very targeted audience of budget- and cost-conscious family users.
In comparison, the official price range of the Proton X50 is approximately RM89,800 to RM113,300. Even considering potential future promotions or dealer discounts, the starting point is still significantly higher than that of the Traz.

It is precisely because of this price difference that configuration and technology have become the most intuitive dividing lines between the two cars. As Proton's main SUV in recent years, the X50 has shown significant investment in technology features. ADAS functions such as adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and lane-keeping assist have become one of its key selling points.
In its segment, such a configuration combination is not a given, further enhancing the X50's appeal in terms of driver assistance and sense of technology. Coupled with a larger central control screen and a more youth-oriented interior design, the X50 clearly conveys an upward positioning in terms of product offerings.
On the other hand, the Perodua Traz leans more towards practicality. It does not attempt to compete directly with the X50 in terms of semi-autonomous driving features but instead focuses on basic safety and everyday usability. The ASEAN NCAP five-star safety rating, 6 airbags, pre-collision safety system, and blind-spot monitoring form a relatively balanced safety foundation. The infotainment system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which is already enough for most commuting and family use scenarios. This configuration strategy is not flashy but closely aligns with real-life vehicle usage needs.

However, what truly creates a noticeable difference is the space performance. Speaking in terms of data, the trunk volume of the Traz is about 471 L, while the Proton X50 offers about 330 L. The nearly 150 L difference is not just a number on paper. In daily life, whether it is weekend shopping, storing a baby stroller, or a short family trip, such a space gap is directly perceptible. Additionally, with the Traz's slightly longer wheelbase, the legroom in the rear seats also feels relatively more spacious, which is exactly its core advantage as a family-oriented SUV.
In terms of power and driving experience, the X50 clearly holds the upper hand. Its 1.5 TD turbocharged engine can deliver approximately 181 PS horsepower and 290 Nm torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, offering more confidence during high-speed cruising or acceleration. In comparison, the Traz is equipped with a 1.5 L naturally aspirated engine, which outputs about 105 PS and 138 Nm, focusing on smoothness and fuel efficiency rather than on thrilling performance. This clearly reflects the different driving orientations of the two cars.

Extending the view to long-term ownership costs, Traz’s value-for-money advantage becomes evident again. Based on publicly available maintenance cost estimates, the regular maintenance expenses of Traz in the first five years are approximately RM3,500, while the Proton X50 is around RM5,000. This means that even if discounts bring the two vehicles closer in terms of initial purchase price, the future expenses on maintenance and usage clearly favor the Traz. For families planning for long-term ownership, this is not a difference that can be overlooked.
Of course, when discussing the X50, promotional discounts cannot be ignored. During certain promotion periods, some versions of the X50 indeed offer official discounts of around RM4,000, which, combined with trade-in support, bring the overall discount to close to or even more than RM6,000. In such cases, the actual transaction price of the X50 would become significantly closer to the Traz, making the originally higher price point less definitive.

However, it is important to note that this kind of rebate is more of a phased market strategy rather than a long-term and stable pricing adjustment. It can improve cost performance in the short term, but it will not change the fundamental differences of the models in terms of space, power, and usage orientation. Therefore, when making comparisons, it is more important to distinguish between one-time price discounts and the relationship with the long-term vehicle experience.

Finally, returning to the choice itself, there is actually no answer to which is better. If you have a clear preference for driving experience, power performance, and technology configuration, the Proton X50, even with a slightly higher price, can provide a more complete product experience. If the vehicle is used more frequently for family purposes and there is greater sensitivity to space, fuel consumption, and maintenance costs, the Perodua Traz's advantages are more likely to be amplified in daily use.
For family users with a budget of around RM80,000, the Traz's pricing and space performance are more aligned with practical needs. On the other hand, for first-time car buyers or young consumers looking for a more tech-savvy vehicle, the X50's appeal will increase if a reasonable rebate can be obtained.

Overall, the RM6,000 rebate can indeed narrow the price gap between Proton X50 and Perodua Traz in the short term, but it is difficult to truly offset the advantages Traz has in space utilization and long-term cost efficiency. The final decision should still be based on your own car usage habits, family structure, and budget planning, rather than being swayed by temporary discount rates.

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?
Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.
