Lexus Unveils the IS 500 Climax Edition — Possibly the Final V8 IS

【PCauto】Lexus Japan has just unveiled the 2025 IS 500 Climax Edition — a limited-run performance model available exclusively in Japan, with only 500 units up for grabs. Positioned as the most powerful version in the IS lineup, this special edition is powered by a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 engine (2UR-GSE), delivering a truly classic driving experience. At a time when electric vehicles are taking over the market, this might be one of the last chances to enjoy a high-displacement, fuel-powered IS.

Unchanged Heart: The IS 500 Climax Edition Keeps Its Iconic V8

Under the hood, the IS 500 Climax Edition continues to be powered by the legendary 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, known internally as the 2UR-GSE. This powerplant delivers an impressive 472 horsepower and 535 Nm of peak torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive layout.

In contrast to the abrupt rush of turbocharged or hybrid systems, the engine's smooth, linear power delivery is one of its distinctive charms, according to Lexus. A Brembo high-performance brake system with 6-piston front calipers and 2-piston rear calipers is standard on the vehicle to enhance its raw performance.

Limited in Number, Rich in Details: Exclusive Features of the IS 500 Climax Edition

As a limited-run model, the IS 500 Climax Edition comes with several unique touches that set it apart. Most notably, it features exclusive "Climax" badging both inside and out, instantly signaling its special status. Underneath, a sport-tuned suspension sharpens the car’s handling for a more dynamic driving feel. Visually, the 19-inch alloy wheels are finished in a sleek blacked-out style, while the performance exhaust system adds a deeper soundtrack and a more aggressive rear-end presence.

Step inside, and you’ll find heated sport seats and brushed aluminum pedals that add to the car’s performance-oriented atmosphere.

Lexus Has Positioned It as the Ultimate Expression of IS Performance

Priced at 9,500,000 JPY (around THB2,139,400 or RM278,065), the IS 500 Climax Edition is clearly presented as the peak of the IS lineup’s performance capabilities. Lexus also hints that this could very well be the final IS to carry a V8 engine—marking the end of an era for traditional performance enthusiasts.

The IS 500 Climax Edition goes head-to-head with German high-performance sedans in the same class. For instance, the BMW M340i features a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine producing 382 horsepower, while the Mercedes-AMG C43 pairs a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with a hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 402 horsepower. Thanks to its larger-displacement naturally aspirated V8, the IS 500 Climax Edition not only leads in raw power but also offers a uniquely smooth and linear power delivery that sets it apart.

Looking Ahead: IS's Possible Full Shift to Electrification

The launch of the IS 500 Climax Edition stands as Lexus's heartfelt tribute to the era of traditional high-performance gasoline cars amid the fast-growing wave of electrification. With its exclusive limited-edition status and powerful V8 engine, it targets enthusiasts who cherish the unique thrill of a large-displacement naturally aspirated powertrain and the legacy of the IS series.

That said, this 5.0-liter V8 platform is quite mature, and it falls short when it comes to fuel efficiency and emissions compared to today’s smaller turbocharged or hybrid systems. This makes the model more of a passion project than a mainstream choice.

By releasing this special edition now, Lexus seems to be acknowledging the end of an era while quietly preparing for a future where the IS lineup may fully embrace electric powertrains — a future where performance and sustainability go hand in hand.

Perodua Traz VS Ativa, which one is more worth buying?

Traz, as a newly launched mid-sized SUV, offers more spacious room and mainstream power compared to small SUVs, but its pricing appears slightly higher than that of Ativa. Ativa, on the other hand, is Perodua's long-time best-selling small SUV with more affordable pricing and a balanced combination of power and tech features.

Perodua Traz VS Toyota Yaris Cross, where does the Traz fall short?

Before the official launch of the Perodua Traz, market expectations were actually very high because it shares the same DNGA platform as the Toyota Yaris Cross. However, sharing the same platform does not equate to the same experience, and the Traz's final performance has indeed been disappointing. Perhaps it is precisely because of the delayed launch that it has almost no competitiveness in the current competitive environment.
