The Lexus ES 200: Laughed Out of Existence

MichaelMar 23, 2026, 03:56 PM

[PCauto] With the official global debut of the eighth-generation Lexus ES, we quickly noticed that the once entry-level model, ES 200, has been discontinued entirely. Now the only models that remain are the ES 350h, ES 350e, and ES 500e. To mark the occasion, Lexus has released a two-tone special edition of the ES 200 exclusively for the Chinese market as a commemorative variant.

ES 200's market performance was not bad

I have always believed that the Lexus ES 200 is the most successful paradox in the automotive industry over the past decade.

A nearly 5-meter-long executive sedan equipped with a 2.0 L naturally aspirated engine and a CVT transmission—this combination, if found in a Toyota Camry or Corolla, might be labeled as fuel-efficient and reliable.

But the moment it bears the Lexus badge, this setup seems very inappropriate. After all, the ES is a luxury model intended to compete with the Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, and even the E-Class and 5 Series.

However, unexpectedly, the ES 200 sold quite well in certain markets. Particularly in the Chinese market, in 2025, Lexus achieved sales of 118,600 units in China, with the ES 200 entry-level version contributing a significant portion. From January to May 2025, its cumulative sales reached 47,000 units, accounting for more than 60% of ES series sales.

Yet the ES 200 remains a highly unique model that is only sold in a few select markets.

In Europe, the Lexus ES only offers a hybrid version—the ES 300h is its sole powertrain option. In the North American market, the ES 200 is also nowhere to be found. The main models in the U.S. market are the ES 350 (equipped with a V6 engine) and the ES 300h (hybrid version).

In other words, China is the largest market for the Lexus ES, and the ES 200 has long served as the entry-level model, acting as the main driver of sales.

Thanks to its relatively affordable price point and strong brand influence, the ES performs exceptionally well in the Chinese market, once even becoming one of the best-selling imported luxury vehicles. The Southeast Asian market follows a similar pattern, where the ES 200 once also held significant importance.

ES 200 Barely Feels Like a Luxury Car

From a mechanical perspective, the ES 200 barely feels like a luxury car.

The old ES 200, with its 173 hp, 206 Nm engine, driving a body weighing over 1.6 tons, had a 0-100 km/h acceleration that perpetually lingered above 11 seconds.

In contrast, the BMW 5 Series starts at a 2.0T engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of about 190 hp and a peak torque of 310 Nm, achieving 0-100 km/h in approximately 7.8 seconds.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class E200 also comes with a 2.0T + 9AT combination, delivering a maximum horsepower of about 204 hp, peak torque of 320 Nm, and a 0-100 km/h time of about 7.5 seconds.

Consumers pay luxury-car prices for the ES200, only to get a Camry-level driving performance. Just like the Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid version, which has a combined horsepower of 218 hp and offers significantly better acceleration than the ES200. This perceived lack of value has become the biggest controversy surrounding the ES200.

The Much-Mocked Lexus ES 200

The pressure faced by the ES 200 doesn’t only come from its underperformance during red light starts, but also from the omnipresent stereotyping on social media.

For many people who have never actually sat in the car, the ES 200 has already been labeled as a type of "fake luxury" or a representative of "buying the badge, not the power."

This kind of public opinion environment significantly influences the mindset of potential buyers, making more and more car buyers concerned about a sense of social security: "My car can be slow, but it cannot be widely recognized as slow."

When the ES 200 is constantly mocked for having weak power, its brand premium begins to crumble. This fear of being ridiculed has become the last straw that breaks the ES 200.

Does the ES 200 Have No Advantages At All?

In China and some Southeast Asian markets, such as Thailand and Malaysia, taxation is directly linked to engine displacement.

2.0 L is a critical tax rate threshold. Introducing the ES200 helps lower consumption taxes, thereby reducing its entry price. This attracts high-end consumers who would otherwise buy flagship D-segment models like the Camry or Accord, enabling them to easily step into the realm of luxury brands.

ES 200 is a higher grade than Camry

Lexus tries to compensate for the power shortcomings of the ES200 by enhancing comfort.

Efforts have been made in NVH to keep the cabin quiet; the suspension is tuned for comfort; the interior texture is also quite impressive.

If you've experienced the ES 200, you should clearly feel that it is not in the same league as the Camry.

But times have changed

However, times are changing, and consumers are increasingly concerned about indicators such as "acceleration" and "specifications."

In the era of electric vehicles, power has become a fundamental capability. Nowadays, entry-level pure electric cars such as the BYD Seal and Tesla Model 3 generally offer 0-100 km/h acceleration experiences within 5-7 seconds. The ES 200 is really falling behind.

But luckily, Lexus realized this issue early on, and the ES 200 has long exited the market in Southeast Asia. The Lexus ES 300h is faster and more fuel-efficient. Its fifth-generation THS hybrid system has completely surpassed the ES 200 in terms of smoothness, fuel economy, and mid-range acceleration.

Today's Lexus needs technologies like the ES 500e to redefine luxury. As for the much-ridiculed ES 200, it might still retain its value in the used car market due to its reliability and durability.
