Lotus Eletre PHEV: The most powerful Eletre model in history, 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 3.3 seconds

【PCauto】Amidst the wave of electrification sweeping through the global automotive market, Lotus recently announced the launch of its first plug-in hybrid SUV, the Eletre PHEV, marking a significant shift in its electrification strategy.
Lotus, which had originally planned to produce only electric vehicles by 2028, has now adjusted its course and introduced this new model due to weak sales performance.
The Most Powerful Eletre Model in History
In terms of appearance, the Lotus Eletre PHEV is almost identical to the all-electric Eletre, distinguished only by a more open front grille and the 'For Me' logo.

However, the powertrain change is revolutionary. The SUV is equipped with a 2.0L turbocharged inline-four engine producing 279 horsepower on its own, paired with a 70kWh high-voltage battery supporting 900V fast charging at over 400kW.
This configuration allows the Eletre PHEV to achieve a range of 354 kilometers (CLTC) in electric mode, though its EPA range is approximately 248 kilometers.

The total power output of the Eletre PHEV reaches 952 horsepower, making it the most powerful Eletre model in Lotus's history. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds.
Lotus Faces Significant Sales Challenges
From January to September 2025, Lotus' global sales were only 4,612 units, a year-on-year decrease of 40%, resulting in an operational loss of up to $357 million.
CEO Feng Qingfeng stated that launching hybrid models would help boost sales in markets with low acceptance of electric vehicles, such as Italy and Saudi Arabia.

This strategy is also applicable to the Southeast Asian market, especially Malaysia and Thailand. The latter, as Southeast Asia's automotive manufacturing hub, favors hybrid vehicles for their practicality and cost-effectiveness.
The Eletre PHEV's design focuses not only on performance but also incorporates high-tech elements. It is equipped with retractable LiDAR sensors aimed at enhancing aerodynamic performance and enabling advanced driving assistance features.
This innovation reflects Lotus's commitment to high performance while striving to meet consumer demands for intelligence and safety.

Lotus Transitions Towards Hybrid Technology
In terms of market strategy, Lotus is transitioning toward hybrid technology, combining traditional internal combustion engines with electric motors in plug-in hybrid systems to offer a wider range of options.
Models like Eletre and Emeya will adopt this approach, while production of the gasoline-powered Emira will continue.

Although Lotus's global sales remain in a downturn (with only 4,612 units sold in the first three quarters of this year), the addition of PHEV models presents an opportunity to attract hesitant users, especially in markets without subsidies but with a preference for luxury SUVs.
