12th Generation All-New Honda Civic Spotted Test Driving: Features a Flatter Design

[PCauto] Although the current 11th-generation Civic still maintains impressive sales globally, facing the increasingly competitive compact sedan market, Honda has evidently accelerated its model update pace.

The exterior will undergo significant changes

According to the latest leaked testing photos, the 12th-generation Civic (internal code possibly FM) has made noticeable adjustments in its design language.

The new car's front contour has become flatter and wider, and this visual shift in focus gives the vehicle a sleeker, more athletic stance with a distinct touch of coupe-like styling.

Despite the heavy camouflage covering the body, we can still clearly see the massive trapezoidal lower grille, complemented by sharper LED headlight lines. This design approach evidently aims to maintain practicality while rediscovering the rebellious spirit inherent in the Civic.

Interior transformation is equally radical

Although the dashboard is tightly concealed in the spy photos, its outline still suggests the adoption of a larger floating central control screen, speculated to reach 15 inches in size.

More importantly, Honda appears to intend to eliminate the traditional gear lever in this generation, opting instead for a more space-saving column shifter design.

This design not only greatly enhances storage capacity in the central armrest area but also marks Civic's move towards a more technologically advanced and upscale interior style.

Lighter but Stronger

It is understood that the next-generation Civic will be built on a deeply improved modular architecture.

The most surprising data is undoubtedly the overall weight reduction. By increasing the proportion of aluminum alloy in key areas and optimizing structural design, the weight of the new platform is significantly reduced by about 90 kg compared to the current model.

Meanwhile, with further enhanced body rigidity and an all-new Motion Management System, the new model delivers class-leading roll and pitch control in corners, and can even rival some entry-level sport sedans.

Equipped with Fourth-Generation e:HEV Hybrid System

This system takes design cues from the Accord and CR-V, changing the connection between the drive motor and the generator from series to parallel. This not only makes the power unit more compact but also creates space for improving torque output.

What excites driving enthusiasts even more is that Honda has confirmed it will bring the S+ Shift simulated shifting technology, first debuted on the new Prelude, to the Civic.

This system does not rely on a physical transmission. Instead, it uses precise torque control and sound compensation to simulate the engaging shift feel of a dual-clutch transmission during acceleration, thereby completely solving the "rubber band" acceleration experience often criticized in traditional e-CVT systems.

Expected to Debut at the End of 2026

The new-generation Civic is expected to debut in late 2026, first in North America and Japan.

The 12th-generation Civic is not just a simple facelift. By shedding 90 kg, refining its handling logic, and introducing simulated shifting technology, Honda is clearly aiming to counter the impact of electric vehicles with more genuine driving pleasure.

In the final golden era of internal combustion engines and hybrid technology, this Civic might become an unavoidable choice for many B-segment and C-segment enthusiasts.
