MG 4X spotted, equipped with semi-solid-state battery, range can reach 510 kilometers

[PCauto] SAIC MG recently submitted a filing for the new all-electric SUV MG 4X to the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). As a new member of the MG 4 family, the most striking feature of this compact SUV is not its design, but its adoption of Semi-solid-state battery technology and a range of 510 km under the CLTC standard.

MG 4X's Exterior Design

Based on the filings released by MIIT, the MG 4X strongly inherits the youthful design language of the MG 4 family.

At the front, the new car features a trendy split-headlight design, along with a horizontal LED light strip and an illuminated MG logo, creating a highly recognizable appearance.

This design language, to some extent, also aligns with the brand's bold approach in its recent transition to intelligent electrification.

MG 4X dimensions:

Length: 4,500 mm

Width: 1,849 mm

Height: 1,621 mm

Wheelbase: 2,735 mm

In terms of size, it targets the core segment of the compact SUV market with precision.

The side profile features smooth lines, with a slightly rising beltline complemented by a floating roof design. At the rear, a full-width tail light enhances the dynamic and sharp overall style that MG is known for.

Semi-solid-state battery

MG 4X’s real ace is hidden beneath the chassis. According to the filing information, the new car will be equipped with semi-solid-state lithium-manganese batteries jointly developed by SAIC and QingTao Energy.

This battery reduces the liquid electrolyte content to about 5%, significantly improving energy density and thermal stability.

In laboratory tests, this battery has passed rigorous nail penetration tests, achieving extreme safety performance with zero smoke and zero fire.

What further attracts industry attention is its low-temperature performance. For pure electric vehicles, winter range reduction has always been a pain point for users.

This semi-solid-state battery achieves a capacity retention rate of 90% in -20°C environments, and even under extreme cold conditions of -25°C, it maintains 72% range capability.

The CLTC comprehensive range of MG 4X as stated in the filing is 510 km, which is highly competitive data for an entry-level SUV priced at 100,000 RMB (approximately 57,000 MYR).

MG 4X’s performance

In terms of power output, MG 4X offers two motor power versions, 125 kW and 150 kW, both using a rear single-motor drive layout.

This means it retains the practicality of an SUV while preserving the signature driving fun of the MG 4 series. The chassis is built on SAIC's E3 pure electric dedicated architecture, providing a foundation for battery safety protection and interior space utilization.

Expected to debut in April

MG 4X is expected to officially debut in China at the Beijing Auto Show in April 2026.

Currently, the competition in the pure electric SUV market is already intense, with major contenders including BYD Atto 3 and GAC AION Y.

MG's choice to strongly promote semi-solid-state batteries at this level has a very clear strategic intention: to gain a competitive advantage through technological leadership.

In the past, semi-solid-state batteries, which were considered unattainable and only appeared in high-end models (such as NIO), are now being brought to the mainstream market by MG.

If the price after mass production can be controlled within 100,000 RMB (approximately 48,800 to 58,600 MYR), it is highly likely to disrupt the current market pattern dominated by traditional lithium iron phosphate batteries.
