MyJPJ launches electronic road tax sharing feature! Easily share electronic road tax and say goodbye to the hassle of borrowing car road tax

In Malaysia, handling road tax is an essential part of vehicle operation. A persistent challenge for many car owners and drivers has been presenting valid road tax documentation when borrowing a vehicle, especially during law enforcement checks.
Now, a practical solution has arrived: Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has officially announced the "Kongsi LKM" (Share Digital Road Tax) feature in the MyJPJ app. This enables vehicle owners to securely share their digital road tax (e-LKM) with authorised drivers, marking significant progress in Malaysia's vehicle licensing digitalisation.
The "Kongsi LKM" Feature: Resolving Road Tax Presentation for Borrowed Vehicles
Previously, borrowers couldn't directly access a vehicle's digital road tax since it was linked to the owner's MyJPJ account. Although printing e-LKM was permitted, operational limitations hindered its effectiveness. The new "Kongsi LKM" feature eliminates this constraint, allowing owners to safely share digital road tax with family, friends, or other authorised drivers. This ensures borrowers can present valid verification during law enforcement inspections (e.g., roadblocks).
Digitalisation of Malaysian Vehicle Licensing: Physical Alternatives During Transition Period
The introduction of the "Kongsi LKM" feature constitutes a pivotal component of Malaysia's vehicle licensing digitalisation initiative. Beyond enabling road tax sharing, this transformation extends to redesigning formats for physical vehicle license discs and driving licenses (LMM). As highlighted by Minister Loke, the government will implement security paper to replace existing physical license discs and driving licenses, thereby enhancing document security and administrative efficiency.
In 2023, Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) conducted comprehensive research and statistical analysis revealing that 7.5 million drivers and vehicle owners had adopted digital services. This substantial adoption rate has informed subsequent digital policy development. Recognising varying adaptation paces among citizens, the transport authority has instituted a 2024 transition period. During this phase, individuals not yet prepared for digital adoption may continue obtaining physical road tax and driving licenses. Crucially, JPJ will exclusively issue newly standardised physical documents using security paper, ensuring alignment between digital advancement and public needs.
Why Screenshots Are Not Legally Valid?
Some may question why electronic road tax screenshots cannot be used. Crucially, screenshots or photographic reproductions of e-LKM lack legal validity as evidence due to risks of tampering or editing, compromising document authenticity. Conversely, accessing shared digital road tax directly through the MyJPJ App provides officially verifiable documentation while preventing potential fraud-a key rationale for the transport authority's endorsement of this system.
How to Share and Access Digital Road Tax
Vehicle Owner's Workflow
1.Launch the MyJPJ App and select the "Profile" icon (bottom-right)
2.Navigate to the "Roadtax" section and specify the vehicle's registration number
3.Tap "Kongsi LKM" to access sharing parameters
4.Enter the recipient's identification number and validity duration
5.Transmit the system-generated 6-digit security verification code to the recipient
6.The sharing authorization expires automatically after 24 hours if unactivated
Authorized Driver's Procedure
1.Log into the MyJPJ App and enter the "Profile" interface
2.Select "Refresh Display"
3.Choose the relevant vehicle registration and enter the security code
4.Upon successful validation, the e-LKM becomes accessible within the App
Digitalisation Prevails, User Choice Remains Paramount
For Malaysia's vehicle owners and drivers, the MyJPJ app's continuous enhancements directly resolve operational challenges-from presenting borrowed vehicles' road tax to carrying physical documentation-while significantly streamlining vehicle management services.
Progressing through the 2024 transition period with the parallel issuance of security paper-based licences, Malaysia's digital licensing framework evolves toward comprehensive maturity, promising amplified public convenience.
Whether you adopt digital solutions as an early adopter or maintain preference for physical alternatives under statutory provisions, MyJPJ delivers legally compliant and accessible options for all citizens.
