2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Malaysia. On June 18, Jin Zhuanglong, the Minister of Industry and Information Technology of China, visited the headquarters of Proton in Shah Alam, Malaysia, to examine the development of the Proton and Tanjung Malim’s automotive high-tech valley (officially known as AHTV) project. He was accompanied by Zafrul Abdul Aziz(Malaysia's Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry), Li Shufu(Chairman of GEELY), Tan Sri Syed Faisal(Managing Director of DRB-HICOM Group), Wei Mei(Senior Vice President of GEELY and CEO of Geely Holding in Malaysia), Wei Zhiling(Senior Vice President of Geely Holding Group) and Li Chunrong(CEO of Proton).

Jin Zhuanglong witnessed the "Milestone of Proton 5 Million Vehicles" celebration ceremony and gained further insights about the cooperation and win-win model between Geely and Proton, as well as the coordinated development of Geely's strategic input of four Proton models—Proton X50, X70, X90, S70 and their engines.

Jin Zhuanglong stated that the automotive industry is a highlight in the economic and trade cooperation between China and Malaysia. And China has become an important force in driving the transformation and development of the global automotive industry, which has made significant contributions to the global efforts to tackle climate change and transition to green energy. He encouraged businesses to deepen their roots in the Malaysian market to offer high-quality products and services to consumers, which further facilitate the economic and social development of Malaysia.

The Proton X90 launched that day was the 5 millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line by Proton, and it was also Proton’s first electrified model. Since its launch on December 12, 2018, the Proton X series has sold more than 217,000 units, helping Proton become the leader in SUV sales in Malaysia.
Currently, Malaysia is promoting the transformation and upgrading of the automotive industry, increasing efforts to enhance technological innovation and industrial chain synergy. With its advantageous resources, GEELY, based on the successful experience of the Proton project, collaborates with DRB-HICOM Group to build AHTV from four dimensions including production, education, research, and city, which aims to create a highland of electrification and new technology research and development manufacturing. AHTV plans to achieve a production capacity of 500,000 vehicles by 2035, 50% of which will be exported. It also plans to build a supply chain system of 1 million sets of parts, 50% of which will serve the global market, thus opening a new chapter in the Malaysian automotive industry.
