Tesla fires charging infrastructure team, but Musk says Supercharger network will still be expanded

Kevin WongMay 07, 2024, 10:49 AM

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently stated on social media platform X that "Tesla still plans to expand the supercharging network, but the expansion speed of new locations will slow down, and there will be more focus on 100% normal operating time and expansion of existing locations." Although the expansion of Tesla's super charging network is still in progress, news that hundreds of Tesla's charging team have been laid off has already come out.

Foreign media reports stated that according to Tesla's internal email, Musk had dismissed Rebecca Tinucci, the senior supervisor of Tesla's charging infrastructure and up to 500 employees in her team before making the above comments. In addition, Musk also fired car project supervisor Daniel Ho.

J.D. Power and other institutions’ consumer survey results show that Tesla's supercharging network is not only the largest in the United States, but also the most reliable charging network. Tesla is currently opening up its charging network to more than a dozen competitors, which will help promote electric vehicles in the North American market.

However, the recent news of Tesla's layoff of employees who are solely responsible for expanding and maintaining the supercharging network has caused concern about the prospects of perfecting and maintaining the charging infrastructure in the North American market.

The market analysis results show that due to high prices and concerns about driving range and charging infrastructure, the sales of pure electric vehicles in the United States are already facing pressure, and the slowdown in the expansion of the supercharging network is a major blow to this. Even some insiders believe that if Tesla cannot maintain a leading position in the field of public charging, this may damage the entire electric vehicle industry.
