The third-generation Mazda CX-5 debuts in Europe, equipped with the largest central control screen in Mazda's history
MichaelJul 11, 2025, 03:22 PM
[PCauto] Mazda has officially unveiled the all-new third-generation CX-5 in Europe, marking a significant evolution of the brand’s best-selling model in the world, and simultaneously, Mazda North American Operations released the 2026 CX-5 in North America.
According to the rollout plan, the new model will make its debut in Europe by the end of 2025, while entering the North American market in early 2026, followed by Japan and other markets in the same year.
Since 2018, the CX-5 has been Mazda’s top-selling vehicle worldwide, with cumulative sales surpassing 4.5 million units. For this new generation, Mazda has adopted the core development principle of “New Generation Emotional Daily Comfort,” aiming to deliver a more emotionally resonant and comfortable daily driving experience. Based on the released information, the 2026 CX-5 sees major upgrades in visual design, interior pragmatism, technology features, and powertrains.
Inheriting KODO Exterior Design, with Body Length Increased by 114 mm
The new CX-5 carries forward Mazda’s signature KODO design language, yet with a more contemporary touch. The front fascia has undergone a bold update, featuring a wider Mazda Signature Wing grille and more angular headlights—exuding a stronger road presence.
At the rear, the design takes cues from Mazda’s larger-sized CX-70 and CX-90 SUVs. One notable change is the replacement of the traditional round Mazda emblem with a clean “MAZDA” word-mark centered on the tailgate, enhancing visual identity and brand recognition.
One of the key highlights of this new generation is the increased overall size. The new CX-5 is approximately 114 mm longer, with a correspondingly extended wheelbase and a width increase of around 13 mm. These dimensional gains translate directly into a more spacious interior—most notably, rear-seat legroom and cargo capacity have been significantly improved.
Largest-Ever 15.6-Inch Center Touchscreen
Interior and technology upgrades are another key highlight of the 2026 CX-5. The new model is marked by the largest center touchscreen ever seen in a Mazda—a 15.6-inch display that immediately draws attention as the focal point of the cabin. This bold move may reflect influence from Mazda’s Chinese partner.
The 15.6-inch display is deeply integrated with Google Built-in, allowing users to get access to Google Maps, the Google Play Store, and even the AI assistant Gemini developed by Google in the years ahead.
This system is designed to deliver a more convenient and intelligent in-car connectivity experience. In addition, the new CX-5 introduces a seven-color adjustable ambient lighting system and a panoramic sunroof, both further enhancing cabin comfort and atmosphere. Mazda has also refined its human-machine interface (HMI) to make controls more intuitive and user-friendly.
Powered by SkyActiv-G 2.5L Four-Cylinder Engine
The new 2026 CX-5 will primarily be equipped with an enhanced 2.5-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder gasoline engine, with a maximum output of 187 horsepower and 251 Nm of peak torque. It comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and the Mazda’s i-Activ AWD all-wheel-drive system is commonly employed in this lineup.
Notably, the European-specific CX-5 will come standard with a 2.5-liter e-SKYACTIV G engine paired with Mazda’s M Hybrid mild hybrid system.
Mazda has officially confirmed plans to introduce a more powerful hybrid variant in 2027, which will feature a SkyActiv-Z engine combined with the Mazda Hybrid System.
In contrast, marketing efforts in North America have placed greater emphasis on the CX-5’s deep integration with the Google ecosystem and its upgraded advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), while continuing to highlight its IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating as a key safety advantage.
As a core model in Mazda’s lineup, the third-generation CX-5 preserves the brand’s signature driving enjoyment and design elegance, while delivering major advancements in space, smart technology, and electrification. Its market performance is highly expectation-inducing.
