The third-generation Nissan Leaf officially debuts: from a hatchback car to a crossover SUV with a 622 km range

[PCauto] As the world's first mass-produced electric vehicle, Nissan Leaf has indeed built a solid reputation over the past decade. However, against today's crop of EVs, many boasting 500–600 km of range and futuristic designs, the aging second-generation Leaf is struggling to keep up.

But with the 2026 Leaf, Nissan has delivered an answer that makes everyone take a fresh look at this veteran.

This time, the Leaf is no longer the unremarkable hatchback. It has undergone a complete transformation, becoming a sleek and dynamic crossover SUV. This transition is actually very wise, as today's consumers have an almost irrational obsession with SUVs.

The Completely Transformed SUV Leaf

The design of the new car draws heavily from the previous Chill-Out concept car, and its overall silhouette closely resembles a smaller version of the Ariya.

The front adopts a closed grille combined with a through-type lighting strip, plus the illuminated Nissan logo, creating a very modern visual effect. Rather than chasing raw power, Nissan focused its efforts on aerodynamics.

Through the flat platform, hidden door handles, and specially designed side mirrors, the all-new Leaf achieves an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.25 Cd.

Don't underestimate this number, as it is key to achieving long-range capability despite its battery capacity not being exceptionally large.

Inside the car, you will find that the 2026 Leaf has also been deeply influenced by the Ariya.

With a combination of dual 12.3‑inch or even 14.3‑inch screens and Google built‑in, the once "stuffy" Japanese interior feel is completely gone.

Although some plastic components are still retained inside the car to control costs, the overall comfort and technology feel have reached a very high level in its class, thanks to the Zero Gravity seats and Bose audio system (featuring speakers even in the headrests).

WLTP range reaches 622 kilometers

Speaking of range, this is undoubtedly the strongest highlight of the 2026 Leaf. The new car is built on the CMF-EV platform developed by the Renault-Nissan Alliance and offers two battery capacities.

The entry-level model is equipped with a 52 kWh battery, providing a WLTP range of approximately 436 kilometers; the more attention-grabbing higher-spec version is equipped with a 75 kWh battery, which allows a WLTP range to surge to 622 kilometers.

For a compact crossover primarily geared towards family use, this data already surpasses many competitors in the same class and even puts some more expensive electric vehicle models to shame.

More importantly, the Nissan Leaf has finally embraced the CSS standard for fast charging ports.

The new generation model has completely abandoned the old CHAdeMO fast charging port, and the North American version has even adopted Tesla's NACS port.

Furthermore, the previously much-criticized air-cooled battery pack has been replaced by an advanced liquid-cooled thermal management system.

This means that the current Leaf not only charges faster (supporting up to 150 kW DC fast charging, replenishing over 400 kilometers in 30 minutes), but its reliability under continuous high-speed driving or extreme weather has also taken a qualitative leap.

However, we have also noticed an interesting phenomenon.

Nissan seems to have deliberately downplayed the performance parameters. The maximum power of the motor in the high-end model is 218 PS, and the 0-100 km/h acceleration time is about 7.4 seconds, slightly slower than the high-performance version of the previous generation.

It's clear that Nissan doesn’t want to compete for "traffic light takeoff" but rather focuses on offering a smooth, linear, and exceptionally energy-efficient driving experience.

The Price of the Nissan Leaf

In terms of price, the 2026 Leaf starts at $29,990 in the U.S. market, approximately 118,000 MYR.

The transformation of the third-generation Leaf is a success. Instead of chasing the hollow glory of performance, it zeroes in on what family buyers actually need: space, range, and charging convenience.

It is no longer just a "grocery-getter" bought for the sake of environmental protection; it is now a truly modern electric SUV capable of handling long-distance travel while boasting an impressive design.

For now, it seems that Nissan is ready to return to the forefront of the electric vehicle battlefield. As for whether it can stand out amidst the crowded competition of brands in China or Southeast Asia, it will likely depend on the final pricing strategy in each region.
