Toyota recalls over 3 million vehicles worldwide, including Camry, Land Cruiser, and Lexus

[PCauto] According to the latest news, Toyota has officially launched a massive global recall involving approximately 3.3 million vehicles due to a defect in the reversing assist system software, which may cause the display to freeze at critical moments.

Reason for the Recall

The core issue of this recall lies in the Parking Assist ECU, which is responsible for processing video signals.

According to the official announcement, affected vehicles may encounter a software logic conflict if shifted into reverse within a short period after startup (typically between 0.7 and 2.6 seconds), which can cause the display to freeze or go completely black.

This means that when you think the rear is clear and start reversing, the screen may still show a still image from several seconds earlier.

In parking lots with pedestrians or on narrow streets, this undoubtedly increases the risk of collisions.

Data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) shows that in the German market alone, more than 22,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles are affected.

Globally, this staggering number reaches 3.3 million vehicles.

Nearly all popular Toyota and Lexus models affected

The production period of the affected vehicles is mainly concentrated between March 31, 2021, and September 9, 2025.

For Toyota, the recall includes family-friendly like the RAV4, the flagship SUV Land Cruiser, the evergreen Camry, and the hybrid pioneer Prius.

Even the pure electric model bZ4X and the hydrogen-powered Mirai are not spared.

Similarly, the impact on Lexus models is widespread, ranging from the entry-level LBX to the popular NX and RX, as well as the flagship sedan LS and the luxury MPV model LM, with almost the entire lineup affected.

This is not Toyota's first issue with camera systems in recent times. In 2024, it recalled approximately 35,000 vehicles in Germany due to water ingress and short circuits caused by inadequately sealed camera housings.

This time, however, the “25SD-108” campaign is purely a software error, with the supplier pointing directly to the Tier 1 giant Denso.

The Cost of Electrification

In the past, vehicle recalls were often due to mechanical issues like axle breaks or oil leaks; now, a single erroneous line of code can send millions of cars back to the factory.

Although Toyota has stated that the current software issue can be resolved through software update and does not pose immediate mechanical safety risks, the frequent recalls of electronic systems undoubtedly undermine the brand's long-standing reputation for reliability to a certain extent. That said, this large-scale recall was voluntarily initiated and disclosed by Toyota.
