U.S. Model Y Owner Sued Tesla for Inflated Mileage Data

[PCauto] The owner of the 2020 Tesla Model Y, Nyree Hinton, filed a lawsuit against Tesla in the United States, accusing Tesla of not using the traditional direct measurement method to calculate mileage, but relying on software estimations such as"predictive algorithms, energy consumption metrics, and driving behavior multipliers", resulting in a obviously overestimated mileage. This lawsuit has attracted widespread attention and once again put the spotlight on Tesla's method of calculating mileage.

Nyree Hinton is a financial analyst in California. He bought a second-hand 2020 Tesla Model Y in December 2022, with the mileage less than 59,500 kilometers.
However, within half a year after buying the vehicle, he found that the mileage of the vehicle was far higher than the actual mileage. Compared to the three vehicles he had previously bought, under the same commuting distance, these three vehicles' average mileage in six months was 9794 kilometers, while his Model Y's mileage reached 21306 kilometers in six months, an increase of 117%.

In the lawsuit, Hinton pointed out that Tesla did not use traditional odometers that directly calculate mileage via tire rotation, but instead relied on software algorithms for estimation. He contended this calculating method would result in overestimated mileage.
As the vehicle approached the end of its warranty period, the mileage data showed an abnormal increase. Court documents revealed that despite no changes in his daily driving habits, the average daily mileage surged from 89 kilometers to 116.68 kilometers - a 30% increase.

Additionally, Hinton noted recurring problems with his vehicle's suspension. In July 2023, Tesla issued a recall notice addressing suspension problems. However, when he visited the service center for the sixth time in January 2024, he was informed that the repairs would require his own payment - as the warranty had expired and the recall notice didn't work in that situation.
He believed it's the odometer's inaccuracy that triggered the early expiration of his basic warranty of 80,500 kilometers, forcing him to cover the $10,000 repair cost personally.

On forums of Reddit and Tesla, many vehicle owners have been questioning the abnormal mileage data over the years. They found that the vehicle's recorded mileage did not match with their actual driving habits, sometimes the mileage data would jump significantly in a short period of time, or there was a significant difference with the mileage recorded by other household vehicles on the same journey.
For example, a user named Reddit said that a 112-kilometer trip was displayed as a 144-kilometer trip; another user on the Tesla forum said that a 196-kilometer trip was displayed as a 302-kilometer trip.
These cases demonstrate Hinton's experience isn't isolated, suggesting potential problems of Tesla's mileage calculation method that have sparked widespread skepticism among owners.

In response to the lawsuit, Tesla has denied all significant allegations. However, if the court ultimately rule these claims valid, Tesla may be compelled to adjust or disclose its mileage calculation method. This issue not only has influence on mileage data accuracy, but also could have profound financial implications for numerous owners.
If mileage figures are indeed inflated, owners might exhaust warranty coverage in advance, so they will face higher maintenance costs, or be pressured into purchasing extended warranty services—potentially generating additional profits for Tesla.

This lawsuit has also attracted attention to the method of calculating mileage for electric vehicles. With the continuous development of the electric vehicle market, mileage, as one of the important indicators, its accuracy is crucial to the consumer's purchasing decision and usage experience.
As a leader in the electric vehicle industry, Tesla's dispute over the method of calculating mileage could possibly impair consumers' trust in the entire electric vehicle industry.

In the future, the progress of this event is worth continuous attention. How Tesla responds to the charges and whether the automobile industry will standardize and improve the mileage calculation method will become important topics in the field of electric vehicles.
