2018 Mazda CX-9 2.5 SkyActiv-G Turbo 2WD (MY-spec) Review

In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's seven-seater SUV market has intensified. Families want to balance spacious practicality without compromising on driving dynamics and configuration experience. The 2018 Mazda CX-9 2.5 SkyActiv-G Turbo 2WD is precisely designed to meet this demand. As Mazda's flagship SUV, it is equipped with a 2.5T turbocharged engine, combining "KODO" design and rich intelligent configuration into a seven-seater layout, with a clear core selling point aimed at delivering "a refined driving experience in a spacious vehicle." Through this static experience and dynamic test drive, we focus on verifying whether it can strike a balance between "practicality" and "driving fun" in the seven-seater SUV segment, providing families with a more refined choice.
From a distance, the "KODO" design of the CX-9 appears exceptionally harmonious on a large-sized SUV: the front face adopts Mazda's family-style shield-shaped front grille, complemented by bright chrome trim and sharp LED headlights on both sides, creating an overall design that is both stylish and sporty. The vehicle's side profile features smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, giving the 5075mm length a sleek appearance rather than looking bulky. The 20-inch multi-spoke wheels also enhance its refined aesthetics. At the rear, the horizontal design of the LED taillight cluster, connected by chrome trim, visually broadens the width; the twin-exhaust outlet layout at the bottom hints at the turbocharged power attribute. The lighting system across the range is equipped with LED light sources, and the addition of automatic headlights and daytime running lights not only enhances recognition but also ensures the convenience of daily driving.
Upon entering the cabin, the interior style of the CX-9 leans towards simplicity and sophistication. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, matched with silver accents, providing a nice tactile feel to all accessible areas. The 9-inch center touchscreen is placed at the top of the dashboard, with clear operational logic, supporting both touchscreen and physical button controls. Below the screen, the climate control area retains physical knobs for easier operation without looking. In terms of configuration, its performance is commendable: the 10-way electrically adjustable driver's seat and the 6-way electrically adjustable passenger seat make it easy to find a comfortable seating position; the tri-zone automatic climate control system allows front and rear passengers to set their own temperatures; the head-up display (HUD) and TFT liquid crystal instrument panel enhance the sense of technology. Safety features are also comprehensive, including 6 airbags, a 360-degree panoramic camera, lane change assist, and active braking. These ensure sufficient safety for daily use.
Space is the core demand for seven-seater SUVs, and the CX-9's 2930mm wheelbase delivers a solid performance. The front seating area is spacious, with a 180cm passenger having a fist and two fingers of headroom after adjusting their seating position. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split fold and offer a large sliding range, with a maximum legroom of up to two fists, ensuring long-distance comfort. The third-row seating is more suitable for children or short trips for adults, offering one fist of headroom and about three fingers of legroom when the second-row seats are adjusted appropriately. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk offers a volume of 230L in its standard configuration, which can be expanded significantly by folding down the third-row seats, meeting the luggage needs of family travel. Practical details such as door panel storage compartments and a central armrest box are sufficient, while the rear is also equipped with air conditioning vents and power outlets.
In terms of power, the CX-9 is equipped with a 2.5T turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 231PS, and the maximum torque can be unleashed at 2000rpm, paired with a 6AT gearbox. During actual driving, the power response in the initial stages is quick, lacking the "heaviness" commonly seen in large SUVs. When accelerating, the turbo engages smoothly, and there is ample power reserve in the mid-to-late stages; pressing the accelerator deeply for overtaking delivers a noticeable push-back sensation. The driving modes include Normal and Sport options. In Sport mode, the gearbox shifts are delayed, and power delivery is more direct, suitable for scenarios requiring rapid acceleration.
Handling performance is one of the highlights of the CX-9. The steering wheel is precise with minimal slack and provides moderate feedback, making it feel more like driving a sedan rather than a 5-meter-long SUV, giving it an added sense of agility. The chassis uses front MacPherson struts and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort without sacrificing support. When passing bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out fine vibrations, and the vehicle body remains stable. During cornering, body roll is well-controlled, providing the driver with ample confidence. The brake pedal offers a linear feel, with a moderate braking distance, making it easy to handle during daily driving.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.1L/100km. During our actual test drive (approximately 60% city roads and 40% highways), the indicated fuel consumption was about 10.2L/100km. Considering its 2.5T displacement and 1854kg weight, this result is on the upper-mid level among seven-seater SUVs in the same class. Noise control is also commendable, with wind and tire noise not being prominent during highway driving, so conversations inside the car do not require a raised voice.
In summary, the 2018 Mazda CX-9 2.5T 2WD stands out for its core strengths: firstly, the high recognition of its "KODO" design brings a standout appearance among seven-seater SUVs. Secondly, it offers a wealth of features, whether it's tech or safety configurations, reaching mainstream standards in the same class. Thirdly, its driving experience balances comfort and handling, catering to the seating needs of family users while also providing driving pleasure for the driver. Compared to the Toyota Fortuner, the CX-9 has superior interior quality and driving refinement. Compared to the Honda Pilot, it offers richer features and more competitive pricing.
This car is suitable for families who value quality of life: they require seven-seat space for daily outings and occasional long trips, while unwilling to compromise on driving sophistication and functionality convenience. If you want a seven-seater SUV that is "more than just practical," the CX-9 could be a great choice—it redefines the "premium feel" of large SUVs through its design, features, and driving pleasure.
