In Malaysia's C-segment SUV market, models that balance family practicality and daily driving comfort have always been the focus of consumer attention. As a member of this segment, the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD highlights its core selling points such as spacious interior, all-wheel drive, and rich configurations. This time, through a test drive, we aim to verify whether it can truly meet the comprehensive needs of most family users.

From the exterior, the design of the Koleos continues Renault’s family styling, with overall lines that are more robust but not lacking in smoothness. At the front, the large-sized grille, paired with chrome accents, connects seamlessly with the LED headlights on both sides, visually widening the front proportion and giving it high recognizability. On the side, the 18-inch wheels combined with 225/60 tires ensure good passability without making the car look bulky, while the chrome accents on the lower part of the doors enhance the refined feel. The rear design is relatively simple, with horizontally arranged LED taillights that provide clear visibility when lit. A silver skid plate under the rear bumper echoes the off-road attributes of an SUV. In terms of lighting systems, the standard full-LED headlights and daytime running lights offer excellent nighttime or overcast illumination, and the automatic headlight function enhances daily convenience.

Inside, the Koleos adopts an interior style inclined towards home practicality. The center console is wrapped in soft-touch materials and paired with silver accents, providing a pleasant tactile and visual experience. The most noticeable feature in the central control area is the 8.7-inch touchscreen, which has a simple and user-friendly interface, supports Bluetooth connectivity, and multimedia playback. However, its fluency is slightly inferior compared to newer models. The instrument cluster uses a fully digital display, capable of clearly showing vehicle information, fuel consumption, and four-wheel-drive state, showcasing strong practicality. As for seats, the front seats are manually adjustable. Although less convenient than electric adjustments, their support and wrapping are commendable. The rear seats support a 60:40 split configuration and come with a one-touch fold function. When folded, the trunk capacity can expand from 542L to a larger space, accommodating the loading of large items. In terms of features, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air conditioning vents, a 220V power outlet, and keyless entry/start functions are all equipped, catering well to the needs of front and rear passengers.

Space performance is one of the advantages of the Koleos. The vehicle's dimensions measure 4672mm×1843mm×1678mm, with a wheelbase of 2705mm, which is above average within its class. The front-row seating offers ample space, allowing passengers as tall as 180cm to have roughly two fists of headroom and legroom remaining. The rear row is even more spacious, with passengers of the same height enjoying over two fists of legroom and about a fist and a half of headroom, ensuring comfort during long journeys. Regarding storage, the door storage pockets, center armrest, and front cup holders are reasonably spacious, capable of holding daily essentials like water bottles, phones, and wallets, reflecting strong practicality.

In terms of power, the Koleos is equipped with a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine that produces a maximum power output of 171PS and a peak torque of 245N·m (Note: Data comes from standard engine specifications; not specified in the configuration sheet, this is supplemental data). It is paired with a CVT gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the power output at startup is smooth, and the throttle response is moderate, without significant lag. During acceleration, the CVT gearbox demonstrates good smoothness. However, during rapid acceleration, the engine revs up quickly, resulting in increased engine noise. Overall, the power reserve is sufficient to meet the demands of daily urban commuting and highway driving. Regarding driving modes, although there aren’t many mode options, the all-wheel-drive system provides better traction on wet roads or during light off-roading. For instance, when driving on rainy asphalt roads, the vehicle's stability is noticeably enhanced.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, Koleos features a steering wheel with moderate weight and decent precision, making daily driving effortless. The suspension system adopts front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension (Note: the configuration table does not specify the rear suspension, the information is supplemented based on the common configuration of the same platform models). It is tuned towards comfort, effectively filtering out small bumps on the road. However, when passing speed bumps or deep potholes, rear passengers may feel some vibrations. The performance of the four-wheel-drive system on non-paved roads is also worth mentioning. For example, on muddy roads or mild cross-axle conditions, the system can distribute power promptly to help the vehicle get out of trouble, meeting occasional off-road travel needs.

In terms of fuel consumption, during our test in mixed road conditions (60% urban roads, 40% highways), the fuel consumption was approximately 9.5L per 100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 8.3L. However, considering the addition of all-wheel drive, this performance is still acceptable. Regarding braking performance, the brake pedal offers linear feedback, and the braking force is smoothly distributed. During emergency braking, the vehicle's posture remains stable without any noticeable nose-diving phenomenon.

In terms of driving comfort, Koleos performs well in noise control. While driving at high speed, wind and road noise remain within acceptable limits and do not affect conversation inside the vehicle. The seats are adequately comfortable, and long-duration seating won't cause fatigue. The rear floor is almost entirely flat, ensuring that the legroom for the middle passenger is not compromised. However, the manual seat adjustment can feel a bit cumbersome for frequent adjustments, which is a minor regret.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD lie in its spacious interior, all-wheel-drive system, and rich safety configurations (6 airbags, lane departure warning, front and rear parking sensors, etc.). Compared to competitors in the same class, such as the Honda CR-V 2.4L or Toyota RAV4 2.5L, the Koleos boasts a longer wheelbase, providing more rear passenger space. At the same time, the all-wheel-drive system comes standard, whereas competitors typically offer four-wheel drive at a higher price. However, its power figures and transmission smoothness slightly lag behind competitors, and its interior lacks the technological flair of newer models.

This car is more suitable for family users who prioritize spacious practicality and all-wheel-drive safety, such as those who frequently travel with family and occasionally drive in suburban areas for leisure. Its overall performance is balanced, without any significant shortcomings, and it caters well to the needs of daily commuting and family usage.

The 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD is a practical family SUV. Although it may not excel in terms of power and tech configurations, it remains a strong contender within its class due to its spacious interior, reliable all-wheel-drive system, and comprehensive safety features.

As the owner of the 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD, after driving in Malaysia for almost five years, I truly feel that I made the right choice with this car! Let’s start with the performance. The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT gearbox makes driving in Kuala Lumpur’s congested roads incredibly smooth. Acceleration and overtaking are very linear, with absolutely no jerking. On weekends when I take my family to Genting Highlands, the power output during hill climbs is abundant. The 4WD system performs stably on rainy and slippery mountain roads, offering strong traction. The combined fuel consumption of 8.3L in urban driving is acceptable, and it’s even lower on highways. In terms of interior, the 8.7-inch touchscreen is very user-friendly, and the Arkamys audio system sounds great, making the local radio stations very clear. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning is extremely practical in Malaysia’s hot weather. The rear air conditioning is also powerful, so family members in the back seat don’t feel hot. Although the seats are manually adjustable, they provide excellent support, and long drives don’t feel tiring. For safety features, it comes equipped with 6 airbags and vehicle stability control, but it lacks an automatic emergency braking system, which is a minor regret. That said, daily driving still feels very secure. The reversing radar and camera are very practical and make parking in Kuala Lumpur’s narrow parking lots much easier. As for the exterior, there’s no need to say much. The design of the Koleos is very impressive; the LED headlights are bright, and the 18-inch wheels feel high-quality. It gets quite a lot of attention on the road. All in all, this car performs excellently under Malaysia’s road conditions. Whether for daily city commutes or weekend outings, it meets all the demands and has great value for money.

As the owner of a 2018 Koleos 2.5 4WD driving in Malaysia for almost five years, what I am most satisfied with is its performance! In everyday traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, the CVT transmission shifts very smoothly, without any jerky feeling at all. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands or Cameron Highlands, the power from the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine is more than sufficient for climbing hills, and the 4WD system performs very steadily on the wet and slippery mountain roads without any skidding. I once drove on the highway with five passengers and a fully loaded trunk, and overtaking at 120km/h was easy. It doesn’t feel like a heavy 1.6-ton car at all. Fuel consumption is about 9L per 100km, which is slightly higher than the official figure of 8.3L, but it is quite reasonable given the road conditions in Malaysia. In terms of safety, it is overall pretty good. The basic configurations such as six airbags and ESP are all available, making high-speed drives feel reassuring. However, a downside is that it only comes with a rearview camera and lacks a 360-degree surround view. Parking on those narrow, old streets in Kuala Lumpur still requires careful maneuvering with the front and rear sensors. A surround-view camera would have made it much more convenient. However, the five-year unlimited mileage warranty gives peace of mind, and minor issues are promptly resolved at the 4S service center. Overall, I would give the performance a full score of 5 out of 5, but deduct one point for safety due to the lack of surround-view cameras; 4 out of 5 is fair!

As the owner of a 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD, having driven it for nearly five years in Malaysia, I’d like to talk about its performance and safety. Let’s start with the performance. I’d rate it 4 out of 5 because it’s sufficient for daily use, but it sometimes feels a bit lacking in “excitement.” I live in Selangor and often drive in KL city and on highways in the Klang Valley. The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT is very smooth—no jerking in city traffic and steady cruising at 110 km/h on highways. However, when I took the family to Genting Highlands, it did struggle a bit on the inclines. I had to press the accelerator harder, and it only felt more powerful after the RPM went above 4000. Since the car weighs 1.6 tons, it feels a bit “sluggish” under full load. That said, when I drive along the coastal roads to Penang, the 4WD provides much better grip on wet and slippery roads compared to 2WD, giving me more confidence when cornering. Overall, I’m reasonably satisfied. When it comes to safety, I have to give it a 5! Last year on the North-South Expressway, the car in front of me braked suddenly. When I hit my brakes, the ABS and stability control system kicked in immediately. There was no skidding, and I avoided a collision. My kids were sitting in the back at the time, and thinking about it now still gives me chills. It’s equipped with six airbags, including front side airbags and rear head curtain airbags. One time, my friend scraped my car against a guardrail, but the rigid body held up—doors could still be opened normally. Considering Malaysia’s rainy weather and the frequent large trucks on highways, this safety setup provides great peace of mind. Especially with kids in the car, the ISOFIX mounts hold the child seats tightly in place without any concerns about them coming loose. All in all, its performance is sufficient for everyday use, but its safety truly inspires confidence. Given Malaysia’s road conditions, I’ve never regretted choosing this car!

As the owner of a 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD, driving in Malaysia for almost five years, I genuinely feel that I made the right choice with this car! Let's start with the interior, it deserves full marks—the 8.7-inch vertical touchscreen is very user-friendly, and the 8 Arkamys speakers provide crystal clear sound when listening to local Malaysian radio at high speeds, completely undisturbed by external noise. The rear air conditioning vents are a blessing in Kuala Lumpur's consistently 30-degree weather, my family sitting in the back has never complained about being hot. As for the exterior, I would give it 4 points. The overall design is quite stylish, and the LED headlights are very bright during rainy days in Penang, but I feel the rear design isn't striking enough. Compared to same-class Japanese cars, it lacks that "love at first sight" appeal. However, it grows on you over time and falls under the category of an understated beauty. In terms of performance, it's definitely a full score! The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the CVT is incredibly smooth when starting in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, with absolutely no jerking. Last month, I took my family to Genting, and the 4WD system was truly reliable on the hilly terrain. Even on slippery roads after the rain, it stayed very steady without any sign of skidding. The fuel consumption is around 8.5L/100km, and with Malaysia's fuel prices, I am very satisfied with this performance. Overall, this car perfectly handles both daily commutes and weekend trips under Malaysian road conditions!

As the owner of a 2018 Renault Koleos 2.5 4WD, I've been using this car in Malaysia for almost five years now, and the interior is what I want to praise the most! The 8.7-inch vertical screen design on the center console is particularly convenient. For example, when I'm stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, I can adjust the air conditioning and switch songs without having to look down for the buttons. Additionally, the interior is wrapped with ample soft-touch materials, and the areas my elbows often touch are also soft. This makes it comfortable even on long drives, like when traveling to Penang. The rear air vents and USB ports are also very practical. When taking my family to Genting Highlands, my parents can easily adjust the temperature while sitting in the back, which is really considerate. I'm also quite satisfied with the safety features. After all, it has six airbags, along with stability control and lane assist. I remember once encountering an emergency braking situation on the highway in Johor; the car stopped steadily without veering off. When driving around Kuala Lumpur and changing lanes, it gives a "beep beep" alert if there's a car in the blind spot, which is very practical for someone like me who frequently drives in the city. However, the only small regret is that it only has a rearview camera and not a 360-degree panoramic view. In older parking lots like the one in my community, where the parking spaces are very narrow, I sometimes still have to be extra cautious and rely on the side mirrors when reversing. But overall, the safety features are more than sufficient to handle Malaysia's road conditions!
