Specs

In the Malaysian pickup truck market, durability and versatility have always been core demands of users. As a model that consistently ranks at the top of sales charts, the Toyota Hilux draws great attention with every iteration. The 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4, test-driven this time, is positioned in the mid-range pickup segment, catering to both family use and light off-roading. Its core selling points include practical upgrades such as 7 airbag safety features, a keyless entry system, and Toyota’s consistent reliability. Next, we’ll present a firsthand review through static experience and dynamic driving to determine if this vehicle can meet the dual needs of families and outdoor enthusiasts.

The exterior design continues the rugged style of the Hilux family, with overall boxy and robust lines. At the front, the large trapezoidal grille in combination with chrome trims connects to the halogen headlights on both sides, enhancing the visual width. The silver skid plate below the front bumper adds an off-road touch. From the side, the 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 265/65R18 tires and pronounced fender lines provide a steady and solid impression. The side step below the doors facilitates passenger entry and exit while adding to the layered look of the side profile. At the rear, the vertical taillights offer high recognition, and the rear bumper integrates fog lights and reversing radar sensors. The overall design focuses on practicality with minimal decorative elements.

Inside the cabin, the interior leans towards a utilitarian style, with a symmetrical dashboard layout and easily identifiable buttons and knobs for convenient operation. As for materials, the top of the dashboard is made of hard plastic, but the seams are even, maintaining Toyota’s usual standard of quality. In terms of features, the multifunctional steering wheel supports volume adjustment and phone answering, while the instrument panel is backlit and analog, providing clear readings. The front row is equipped with manual air conditioning, with knobs that have moderate resistance. The central armrest box offers spacious internal storage for items like phones and wallets. The front seats are manually adjustable, with seat cushions of moderate length that provide decent leg support. The rear seats are designed with a 60:40 split and can have the backrests folded down to expand the cargo space in the rear. Additionally, the interior comes equipped with 220V/230V power outlets for convenient use of electrical appliances outdoors, and the keyless entry and push-button start system enhance day-to-day usability.

In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions are 5330mm×1855mm×1815mm, with a wheelbase of 3085mm, providing ample passenger space. After adjusting the front seats to a suitable position, there is about a fist and two fingers of headroom for the front passenger. Rear legroom is approximately two fists, while headroom is about one fist, making it comfortable even for passengers up to 180cm tall. Regarding storage capacity, the door pockets can accommodate two bottles of mineral water, and the center armrest box and glove compartment are practical in size. There are also small storage compartments under the rear seats and on either side of the backrest to store everyday items. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents, enhancing the comfort of rear passengers.

For performance, it is equipped with a 2.4L naturally aspirated diesel engine, delivering a maximum power of 150PS at 3400rpm and a peak torque of 343Nm at 1600rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response at the start is relatively smooth, but once the engine speed reaches 1600rpm, the torque begins to kick in, significantly improving acceleration. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply prompts the gearbox to downshift actively, providing linear power output. In terms of driving modes, it offers 2H (two-wheel drive), 4H (high-speed four-wheel drive), and 4L (low-speed four-wheel drive) modes that are easy to switch between, delivering stable performance when dealing with light off-road conditions.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the front suspension features a double wishbone independent suspension, while the rear suspension uses a leaf spring non-independent suspension. While driving on urban roads, the suspension effectively filters small bumps. However, when passing over speed bumps or rough roads, the rear suspension's bounce is more noticeable, which is a common characteristic of pickup trucks. The steering wheel has moderate steering effort and precise directionality, with body roll kept within acceptable limits in corners, delivering generally stable handling. In terms of braking, the front ventilated disc brakes provide a uniform braking force, and the braking distance feels moderate, inspiring confidence.

Regarding fuel consumption, after comprehensive testing on congested urban routes and highways, the fuel consumption is approximately 8.5L per 100km, which is considered average for diesel pickups. As for safety features, it is equipped with 7 airbags (including knee airbags and front and rear curtain airbags), vehicle stability control, hill-start assist, and more, further enhancing driving safety. In terms of driving comfort, wind and tire noise are well-controlled during high-speed driving, but the noise from the diesel engine is relatively noticeable when idling. The seats provide good support, making long drives less tiring.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4 lie in its practical features, ample space, and reliable powertrain. Compared to the same class Ford Ranger, although it is slightly inferior in terms of technological features, Toyota's brand reliability and lower maintenance costs are its notable strengths. When compared to the Mitsubishi Triton, its 7-airbag safety configuration is more comprehensive. This vehicle is suitable for family users who value reliability and practicality, meeting both the needs of daily commuting and family outings, as well as weekend outdoor off-road adventures. Simultaneously, it's also suited for small business owners for cargo transportation, balancing family and commercial use.

In summary, the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4 is a well-rounded and practical pickup truck with no obvious weaknesses. It excels in safety features and practicality, making it a reliable choice for family users and outdoor enthusiasts.

Pros
The interior is highly practical, with large and clear buttons that support blind operation. The rear seats can be folded down 60:40 to expand space.
Comprehensive safety configuration, including 7 airbags and vehicle stability control, ensures safety in handling unexpected road conditions.
The 2.4L diesel engine delivers strong performance with sufficient low-end torque, and the 4x4 mode is suitable for mountainous roads, muddy terrain, and other challenging conditions.
Cons
The interior has a heavy plastic feel with few soft materials, and some features like manually adjustable seats are not very convenient.
Lacks a reversing camera, making parking inconvenient when relying solely on radar, especially in narrow parking lots.
The front lights are halogen with insufficient brightness; LED lights would be better.

Owner of 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4
I've been driving the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4 in Malaysia for almost five years, and overall, I'm pretty satisfied with it! In terms of interior features, although it's not a luxury model, its practicality is off the charts—the center console buttons are large and clear. During Penang's rainy season traffic jams, it's easy to operate the air conditioning and audio system without looking. The rear seats, which fold 60:40, easily accommodated three suitcases and a baby stroller when I took my family to Ipoh last week. There are a lot of plastic components, which isn't ideal, but they're easy to clean, and I don't worry about wear and tear when carrying construction materials. A reasonable rating would be 4 out of 5. I feel very reassured about the safety features: with 7 airbags and vehicle stability control, the ABS responded quickly and prevented skidding last time I had to emergency brake when a car suddenly changed lanes on the North-South Expressway. The hill start assist is super helpful for starting on the inclines of Genting, eliminating fears of rolling backward. The only downside is the lack of a rearview camera. Narrow parking spaces like those at Pavilion in Kuala Lumpur require careful maneuvering with the sensors, or else I would have given it a full 5-star rating. Performance-wise, the 2.4 diesel engine delivers strong power on the hilly roads of Sabah, even when fully loaded with 5 people and luggage—it doesn't feel sluggish climbing slopes. The 4x4 mode handles the muddy trails of the East Coast perfectly. Last year, I drove it on the sandy roads near the beaches of the Perhentian Islands, and it felt super stable. The only issue is that the noise becomes noticeable when going over 120km/h on the highway, but since Malaysia's highway speed limit is 110, it's more than adequate for daily use, so I'd give it 4 stars. Overall, this vehicle performs impressively well under Malaysian road conditions, making it great for both family use and cargo transport!

As the owner of a 2018 Hilux 2.4 L-Edition, having driven it for almost five years, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! Malaysia's rainy season often brings unexpected situations. The other day on the North-South Expressway, the car in front of me suddenly braked, and the collision warning immediately beeped. With 7 airbags and the vehicle stability control system, I managed to stop steadily without any accidents. When I usually drive my family on the East Coast Expressway, seeing the ISOFIX anchors and knee airbags gives me an extra sense of security. I’d give full marks for safety—there’s really nothing to criticize! As for the interior, although it's not a luxury model, it’s highly practical. The keyless door lock and electric folding mirrors are especially convenient when parking in Kuala Lumpur. The 220V power supply is thoughtful for camping; it can power an electric kettle. However, the plastic feel is indeed a bit much, and the manual air conditioning adjustment isn’t as convenient as an automatic one. Giving it 4 stars seems fair, as durability is the main highlight of a pickup truck. In terms of performance, the 2.4 diesel engine performs exceptionally well on the mountainous roads in Sabah, with ample low-end torque and smooth gear shifts from the AT transmission. When transporting building materials on rough rural roads, switching to 4x4 mode effortlessly handles potholes and muddy terrain. Fuel consumption goes up to 12L in city traffic, but drops to 8L on highways. For a pickup truck weighing over 2 tons, I’m quite satisfied with this performance. 4 stars feel just right!

Owner of 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4
As a 2018 Hilux 2.4 L-Edition owner who has been driving it for 3 years in Malaysia, I genuinely think this pickup is very suitable for the local road conditions! The performance deserves full marks — the 2.4 diesel engine is powerful enough for hauling and climbing. Last time, I carried my whole family and camping gear to Genting Highlands, and encountered muddy roads after heavy rain midway. With the 4x4 mode turned on, it was very stable, and the throttle response was quick when overtaking, totally unlike what you'd expect from such a big vehicle. In terms of safety, it gives me peace of mind. With 7 airbags and a body stability system, last time we got lightly rear-ended in KL traffic, the body was strong enough, and my family was completely unharmed. The active safety features also helped me avoid several potential dangers on the highway. I'll give the interior 4 stars; even though there's a bit of a plastic feel, the design is practical, the button layout is clear, and the manual air conditioner cools quickly in Malaysia's hot weather. The rear seats can be folded down 60:40 to hold longer items, though it would be even better if the seats could be electrically adjusted. As for the exterior, I find it quite appealing. The muscular body gets plenty of attention on rural roads in Sabah. It would be nice if the front lights were LED, as they'd be brighter, but the halogen lights are sufficient for the rainy season. Overall, this pickup is great for both family use and hauling goods. It’s truly worry-free to drive in Malaysia!

Owner of 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4
As a car owner in Malaysia, I've been driving the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4 for almost 5 years now, and I sincerely recommend it to friends who often drive in rural areas or construction sites! **Performance deserves full marks** — The 2.4L diesel engine performs exceptionally well on Malaysia's hilly and muddy roads. Last month, I took my family to Cameron Highlands, fully loaded with 5 people and a trunk packed with camping gear. During uphill climbs, the gearbox shifts smoothly, and the low-end torque comes in very early, with maximum torque achieved at just 1600 rpm. Overtaking or climbing is effortless. Even when stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, it doesn't feel sluggish, and the start is quite brisk. **Safety features** are overall decent, I'll give it 4 out of 5. The 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, and forward collision warning are all very practical. Last time on the Penang highway, I encountered a car that suddenly changed lanes. The warning system promptly alerted me and helped avoid an accident. The only downside is that it doesn't have a reverse camera, only sensors. For a car this size, parking can still be a bit inconvenient, especially in Kuala Lumpur's narrow parking lots. **Interior** deserves 4 out of 5. The design is more practical, the materials are durable, and the layout of the buttons on the center console is clear, which is important for someone like me who often works on construction sites, as they can be operated even with gloves on. However, the plastic feel is a bit strong, making it seem slightly basic compared to other cars in the same price range. The rear seats are spacious, so my family doesn't feel cramped during long trips. The 60:40 foldable seats can also expand the trunk space, which is a very thoughtful design. Overall, the Hilux performs exceptionally reliably under Malaysia's road conditions and is a trustworthy partner!

Owner of 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4
As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Hilux 2.4 L-Edition AT 4x4, having driven it in Malaysia for more than three years, my most intuitive impression is that the appearance and interior of this pickup truck perfectly suit my usage scenarios. Full marks must be given for the exterior! The design of the Hilux is absolutely perfect for Malaysia — the tough body lines combined with the 18-inch alloy wheels make it stand out on the main roads of Kuala Lumpur, and on weekends, driving to Genting or the rural roads of the East Coast, its high ground clearance and 4x4 stance feel especially robust. Especially the trapezoidal grille on the front, paired with halogen headlights and front fog lamps, makes it very noticeable even on those foggy mornings in Penang. My friends all say this pickup looks “ready for action.” I give the interior a 4 out of 5 points, as it follows a highly practical design route. Although the manually adjustable seats are not as convenient as electric ones, they offer good support and don’t feel tiring even after driving two or three hours on a long trip to Melaka. The layout of the center console is very clear, and the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel are large enough to operate even while wearing gloves (after all, sometimes I need to head to the farm to transport goods). However, if I had to point out a minor flaw, it would be the manual air conditioning control knobs in the front, which feel a bit plasticky, and the interior could use more soft-touch materials as most of it is made of hard plastic. If there were more leather wrapping, it would be perfect. But considering that the Hilux is fundamentally a utility vehicle, this level of interior quality is already quite good among its peers. After more than three years, there have been no rattles or noises inside, so I’m really satisfied with that. Overall, the Hilux's exterior and interior fit well with Malaysia’s road conditions and lifestyle. It has great looks while being functional and is undoubtedly a reliable pickup truck.
