In Malaysia's pickup truck market, the Toyota Hilux is always an unavoidable choice—especially for users who need to balance cargo capacity, off-road performance, and everyday usability. Its reliability has been deeply rooted in people's minds. This time, we have obtained the 2018 Hilux Double Cab 2.4 STD MT 4x4. As a mid-tier configuration in the lineup, its core selling point lies in its "balance": the torque output of the 2.4L diesel engine, the freedom of manual 4WD control, and Toyota's consistent durability. With a price tag of RM 100,000, it maintains competitiveness within its class. Our test drive focuses on whether this vehicle can truly meet multi-purpose needs in daily commuting, light off-road, and cargo scenarios.

In terms of appearance, the 2018 Hilux continues the family’s rugged design style. The front grille uses black plastic material, with the Toyota logo embedded in the middle; the halogen headlights on both sides adopt a square shape, complemented by automatic headlight functionality, ensuring practicality; the silver skid plate below the front bumper adds a touch of off-road flair. The side lines of the body are straight, and the length of 5330mm and width of 1855mm ensure cargo bed space. The 265/65 R17 tires paired with 17-inch wheels are suitable for both paved roads and light off-road terrain. At the rear, the vertically aligned tail lights have high recognizability, rear fog lamps are standard, and the loading rail height is moderate, making daily loading and unloading of cargo relatively convenient. The overall design avoids excessive decorative elements, strictly catering to its "practical" positioning.

Sitting inside the cabin, the interior styling emphasizes simplicity. The center console is made of hard plastic material; although the texture is ordinary, the seams are evenly aligned, meeting the durability requirements of a utility vehicle. The instrument panel is a backlit analog style, clearly and intuitively displaying information like RPM, speed, and fuel levels, which remains visible even in bright light. The central control area lacks a large screen, but it comes standard with a 220V/230V power outlet, which is very practical for users needing to connect external devices. As for the seats, the driver's seat is manually adjustable. Although the adjustable range is limited, the padding is relatively thick. The rear seats support folding, which can expand storage space when folded. However, for passengers around 175cm tall, the rear legroom is just sufficient, making long-term sitting slightly cramped. The front air conditioning is manually controlled, simple to operate, and its cooling performance under Malaysia's high temperatures is acceptable.

In terms of power, this Hilux is equipped with a 2.4L naturally aspirated diesel engine, delivering a maximum power of 150PS and a peak torque that kicks in at 1600rpm—which is well-suited for diesel engines. Even when fully loaded, the torque output ensures a confident start without feeling sluggish. The manual transmission has five gear speeds, with clear shift engagements and moderate shift travel. The clutch bite point is relatively low, making it easy for beginners to adapt. When switched to 4WD mode, the vehicle's grip on muddy or gravel roads significantly improves. During our test on light off-road routes in the outskirts, the vehicle handled small slopes and bumpy terrain well. As long as the throttle and gears are controlled properly, it can smoothly handle most situations. The chassis adopts a double-wishbone independent front suspension and leaf spring rear suspension. While driving on paved roads, it filters out minor bumps reasonably but shows good support on larger bumps, without feeling overly loose. The steering wheel has a heavier feel, providing good stability at high speeds, but can be a bit strenuous when maneuvering at low speeds.

In terms of fuel consumption, we tested under mixed road conditions, and the fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers. For a vehicle weighing 2.05 tons, this performance is considered average. Regarding noise control, the vibration and noise of the diesel engine are quite noticeable at idle, but once in motion, wind noise and tire noise overshadow the engine noise, and the overall noise level is within an acceptable range. In terms of storage space, the front door storage compartments can hold two bottles of mineral water. The center armrest box is not very spacious but can hold some small items. Although the official data for the cargo box capacity is not provided, our actual test showed that it can hold two standard-sized suitcases, which meets daily cargo needs.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4 STD MT 4x4 lie in its "durability" and "versatility"—compared to the Ford Ranger 2.2 XL MT in the same category, its price is more affordable, and Toyota’s after-sales network is more complete in Malaysia; compared to the Mitsubishi Triton 2.4 MT, its torque output comes in earlier, making it more effortless during off-road conditions. This vehicle is suitable for users who need to balance between family use and light off-roading, such as small business owners for transporting goods, taking their family camping on weekends, or commuters frequently driving on rural roads. If you are pursuing luxury features, it might not be the best choice, but if you need a reliable and practical pickup, it is definitely a model worth considering.

Pros
The rugged and muscular appearance, 17-inch large tires paired with a black grille, highly recognizable and aligns with the tough pickup truck positioning
Diesel engine with high low-end torque, stable climbing and off-road performance, clear manual transmission control, suitable for rough terrain and cargo hauling
Fuel consumption is stable at about 8 liters per 100 kilometers, and diesel cars have low operating costs under fuel prices in Malaysia
Cons
Low-speed starting with quick clutch release can feel weak; when fully loaded with five people and cargo, it requires throttle input for smoother operation.
Lack of rear-view camera makes reversing in narrow parking lots inconvenient, increasing difficulty for new drivers.
No remote key means manual unlocking is inconvenient when carrying items with both hands.

I have this 2018 Hilux Double Cab 2.4 manual 4WD version, and after driving it for nearly five years, it really suits the road conditions in Malaysia perfectly! First, let's talk about the exterior—I'll give it full marks without any hesitation. The classic muscular body of the Hilux, paired with 17-inch large tires, makes it especially recognizable whether parked under public housing flats or on kampung (village) dirt roads. The black front grille and tough wheel arches always make my friends say, "This definitely looks like it's built for tough jobs" whenever they ride in my car. I personally find it both pleasing to the eye and practical, fitting perfectly with the "tough guy" image of a pickup truck in Malaysia. As for performance, I’d rate it 4 out of 5, mainly due to the manual diesel transmission’s performance. The 2.4L diesel engine delivers great torque as early as 1600 RPM, making it stable when hauling construction materials to the site or taking my family to the rough roads at the foothills of Genting Highlands—it climbs slopes and handles potholes with ease. The manual transmission also feels genuinely engaging to operate, with crisp gear changes. However, since it's a 2018 model, the low-speed start can feel a bit sluggish if you release the clutch too quickly, especially when carrying five passengers with some cargo, as you’ll need to give it a little more throttle to drive smoothly. But it's very comfortable on highways or paved rural roads, maintaining a stable fuel consumption of around 8 liters per 100 kilometers. Under Malaysia’s diesel prices, it's really economical. Overall, the performance is more than enough for daily use and light off-roading. The only downside is the slightly sluggish start, but that’s just a minor flaw—not a dealbreaker at all!

As the owner of the 2018 Hilux 2.4 STD MT 4x4 for more than three years, my most direct impressions are its appearance and safety performance. I would give full marks for its appearance; the design of the Hilux is exactly what Malaysians love— a tough-looking front with muscular wheel arches, making it highly eye-catching on the road. Especially with the silver paint I chose, it looks particularly textured under the Southeast Asian sunlight. Whether I'm carrying goods during the week or taking my family to the East Coast on weekends, parking it on the beach for a photo always looks great. In terms of safety, I would give it 4 stars, and overall, I’m satisfied. The standard three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee) are sufficient for local usage. Once, while in the suburbs of Johor Bahru, a motorcycle suddenly dashed out in front of me, and during the emergency braking, the ABS and EBD responded very quickly, avoiding any accident. However, compared to the high-end version, it lacks a reverse camera, which does make parking a bit challenging in the narrow parking lots in downtown Kuala Lumpur. You need to carefully check the rearview mirrors. Additionally, while the manual door locks are durable, they can be inconvenient when your hands are full. Having remote keyless entry would be much better. All in all, as a utility vehicle, its safety features are quite practical for this price range.

As the owner of a 2018 Hilux 2.4 STD MT 4x4, after driving in Malaysia for nearly five years, I have the most to say about its interior and safety! First, let’s talk about the interior. It’s a solid 5 stars—after all, this is a pickup truck that doubles as a workhorse and a family car, and its practicality leaves me with nothing to criticize. Malaysia’s weather is hot, and the manual air conditioning cools down really fast. When driving along the East Coast Highway with my family, even the kids in the back seat never complain about the heat. The rear seats can be lifted up, which makes it super convenient for me to store tools and camping gear. If the truck bed gets wet during the rainy season, cleaning it is hassle-free. Most importantly, it’s durable. I often drive on bumpy construction sites in Johor, and even when the door panels and seats are stained with mud and oil, a simple wipe with a damp cloth restores them to cleanliness. After five years, the interior still looks as good as new. This perfectly meets the “durability-first” needs of us Malaysian car owners. On the safety side, I’d give it 4 stars—mainly because the basic features are solid but it lacks a bit of modern tech. The standard 3 airbags (driver, passenger, and knee) are very reliable. Last year, while driving on a village road in Selangor, I had to brake suddenly to avoid a motorbike that darted out of nowhere. The car stayed stable during the emergency stop, and the ABS prevented the tires from locking up. In the end, I only scraped the roadside curb, and no one was hurt at all. The ISOFIX anchor points are also practical—it’s super easy to securely attach the child seat for my second child. However, it would’ve been great if it came with a reverse camera. Parking lots at Malaysian markets can get very cramped, and even for an experienced driver like me, I sometimes have to stick my head out to check while reversing. Beginners might feel even more pressure in such situations. All in all, the interior and safety features of this Hilux are perfectly suited for Malaysian road conditions and usage scenarios. I’ve absolutely no regrets about buying it!
