In Malaysia's pickup truck market, durability and practicality have always been the core demands of consumers. The Toyota Hilux, as a model long occupying the top sales rankings, targets families or small business owners who need a vehicle that balances daily commuting and light off-road capabilities with its 2018 Double Cab 2.4G AT 4x4 (IMP) model. The core selling points of this vehicle lie in Toyota's consistent reliability, high safety configuration with 7 airbags, and the passability brought by the 4x4 system. Additionally, its pricing of RM118,100 keeps it competitive in its class. This review will focus on evaluating its daily driving comfort, space utility, and the actual performance of its four-wheel drive system to see if it meets the diverse scenario needs of Malaysian users.

The exterior design continues the rugged style of the Hilux family. The trapezoidal front grille, paired with thick chrome trims, gives it high recognition. The body lines are simple and straight, with a waistline extending from the hood to the rear, enhancing its muscular feel. The length of 5330mm and the width of 1855mm make it look quite imposing. The rear design is conventional, with vertically arranged taillights integrated with the rear bumper. The rear fog lamp is standard, meeting the lighting needs of Southeast Asian road conditions. As for the lighting system, the headlights use halogen light sources, and the automatic headlight function improves convenience. The added front fog lights also enhance visibility in rainy and foggy weather. Overall, the exterior avoids overly fancy designs, focusing entirely on practicality, meeting pickup users' expectations for being "durable and easy to look at."

Opening the door, the interior design is primarily practical. The center console uses hard plastic materials which, although average in tactile sensation, match the durability expected in a pickup truck. A multifunctional steering wheel is standard, with a clear button layout that allows for easy control of audio and calls. The instrument panel features backlit analog displays that are straightforward and easy to read, even in strong lighting conditions. The center console area lacks a large screen, which makes it appear slightly plain but includes a 220V/230V power outlet, a highly practical feature for users requiring external devices. Regarding seating, the driver's seat supports electric adjustment, making it easy to find a comfortable sitting position. The rear seats adopt a 60:40 split folding design, enabling an expanded trunk storage space when folded. The front air conditioning is manually adjustable, with moderate knob resistance making it easy to use. However, the lack of automatic temperature control is slightly regrettable.

Space utilization is an advantage of this Double Cab model. The 3085mm wheelbase provides spacious rear legroom; a 175cm passenger sitting in the rear still has a two-fist gap between their knees and the front seat. Headroom is also sufficient, without any sense of constraint. In terms of storage capability, the front door panels can hold two 1.5L bottles of mineral water, and the central armrest box has a considerable depth for small items. The rear door panels also have storage slots, and the center features cup holders. The rear seats are equipped with ISO FIX child seat anchors, making it convenient for families to install child seats. However, a minor downside is the absence of separate rear air conditioning vents, though the front AC performs well and can quickly cool the entire cabin.

In terms of power, the 2.4L diesel engine boasts a maximum output of 150PS/3400rpm and a maximum torque that can be delivered at just 1600rpm. It is paired with an automatic transmission, providing a responsive power delivery without the typical lag of diesel vehicles during start-up. While driving in the city, the low-end torque is sufficient, making overtaking and lane changing smooth; on highways, at a speed of 100km/h, the engine runs at approximately 2000rpm, with noise well controlled, which does not affect in-car conversations. The four-wheel drive system is easy to operate, switching between 2WD and 4WD modes using a knob. On muddy roads or light off-road terrain, the 4WD mode provides ample traction, making it adaptable to rural roads or construction site conditions. The suspension system adopts a double wishbone independent front suspension and a rear leaf spring non-independent suspension. On paved roads, its filtering of minor bumps is average, and the road feel is quite direct; however, during heavy loads or off-road conditions, the advantages of the leaf spring suspension become evident, offering strong load capacity and better stability.

Fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with urban road fuel consumption around 8.5L/100km, and about 6.8L/100km on highways. The 80L fuel tank capacity allows for a range of over 800km, making it well-suited for long-distance travel. Braking performance is stable, with the brake pedal having a moderate stroke and linear braking force output. During emergency braking, the body remains stable. In terms of noise control, the engine exhibits slight vibrations at idle but drives smoothly with well-controlled wind and tire noise, enabling normal conversations in the rear seats. For seat comfort, the front seats are moderately supportive, with thick padding that prevents fatigue during long drives. The rear seat angle is appropriate, and its comfort level ranks above average among pickup trucks.

In summary, the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4G AT 4x4 (IMP) has standout strengths in reliability, spacious interior, high safety features (7 airbags), and a practical four-wheel-drive system. Compared to its class competitor, the Ford Ranger 2.2L Double Cab, it offers a more competitive price and Toyota's more comprehensive after-sales service network, with lower maintenance costs. However, the lack of a central touchscreen and automatic climate control, along with relatively hard interior materials, are its drawbacks. This vehicle is most suitable for users who need a balance between family outings and light off-roading or cargo transportation, such as small business owners who frequently travel between rural and urban areas or families who enjoy weekend trips. If you prioritize durability and practicality and do not mind a simple interior, this Hilux is a reliable choice.

Pros
2.4 diesel engine delivers strong power, low torque comes early, great for climbing hills with a full load, highway cruising, and rough road capability
4x4 system handles muddy roads, gravel roads, and other complex terrains with ease, suitable for multi-scenario use in Malaysia
Complete safety features, 7 airbags, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, enhance driving safety
Cons
The exterior design is somewhat old-fashioned, the brightness of halogen headlights is insufficient, lacking a sense of fashion, and there is a gap compared to new pickup truck models.
The interior has a heavy plastic feel, lacking a sense of refinement, and some details (e.g., no reversing camera) affect the user experience.
The large body size requires caution when meeting on narrow village and town roads, and parking in urban areas is relatively inconvenient.

As the owner of a 2018 Hilux 2.4G AT 4x4, after driving it for nearly five years, I find the experience quite practical under Malaysian road conditions. The exterior gets 4 stars — the design of the Hilux has always been robust, and the boxy body fits perfectly when driving in local rural towns and construction sites. However, the halogen headlights and side lines of the front are indeed a bit outdated; compared to the newer pickups, it lacks some modern style, but it’s durable and pleasing in the long run. Scratches and bumps don’t feel as painful. Performance definitely deserves 5 stars! The 2.4 diesel engine works impressively on Malaysia's mountain roads and highways — during Kuala Lumpur’s rush hour traffic, the low-end torque comes early, making it effortless to start and follow; on weekends when I take my family to Genting Highlands, fully loaded with 5 people and luggage climbing uphill, the gearbox shifts smoothly, and the power output remains steady without feeling strained at all. The 4x4 system handles muddy roads in East Malaysia or rough roads in the countryside of West Malaysia with ease. Last month, we went camping in Pahang, and driving over gravel roads and small water puddles didn’t even require slowing down. This performance is truly exceptional for local use. For safety, I’d give it 4 stars. Basic features such as 7 airbags and vehicle stability control are all provided. When driving on the highway and encountering sudden situations (such as a motorbike darting out), the braking and ESP respond pretty quickly. However, the lack of a reverse camera is a bit disappointing. Parking in Malaysia can be quite challenging, especially in the narrow spaces in Kuala Lumpur city; relying solely on the rear sensors sometimes requires extra caution. Overall, the safety performance is sufficient, but adding a camera would make it even better.

As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4G AT 4x4, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly five years, the most satisfying aspects are its exterior design and safety performance! Let’s talk about the exterior first. The design of the Hilux really caters to Malaysian tastes—rugged lines, high and prominent fender flares, and 17-inch alloy wheels that exude a commanding presence on the road. Whether driving to commercial areas in Klang Valley during the week or taking the family to the beaches on the East Coast during weekends, it always grabs attention when parked by the roadside. My friends often say, “This pickup looks really durable and imposing.” Moreover, the large body size, over 5 meters long, requires caution when passing on narrow rural roads in Malaysia, but it feels very stable on the highway without any sense of “floating.” Now, about safety, I must give full marks to this aspect! Highways in Malaysia often have unexpected situations, such as motorcycles suddenly changing lanes or potholes on rural roads. The Hilux comes standard with 7 airbags. Last time on the North-South Expressway, a car suddenly cut into my lane and scraped against me; the side airbags deployed, protecting both my wife in the passenger seat and me. Thinking back, it’s still a frightening experience. The vehicle stability control is another great feature. I remember during the rainy season, while driving to Cameron Highlands on wet mountain roads, I could clearly feel the system engaging during a turn, safely pulling the car back on track. Additionally, the ISO FIX anchor points are very practical. With my daughter’s car seat, it locks firmly in place, so when we travel to her grandmother’s house in Ipoh, I no longer have to worry about the seat shifting. In short, the Hilux’s exterior gives me a sense of pride, and its safety features provide my family and me with a full sense of security. In a place like Malaysia with such complex road conditions, choosing this vehicle was definitely the right decision!

As the owner of the 2018 Hilux 2.4G AT 4x4, having driven it for almost 5 years, it's truly practical for Malaysian road conditions! Let's talk about the interior first. I would rate it 4 stars because the overall build quality is solid, but the plastic feel is indeed a bit heavy – most of the dashboard and door panels are hard plastic. However, fortunately, there is sufficient storage space, such as the center armrest box, door compartments, etc., which are convenient for storing change, toll cards, and water bottles, making daily use no problem, though it does lack a high-end feel. Performance deserves a full score! The 2.4 diesel engine is perfect here – even during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour with a half-hour traffic jam, fuel consumption is only around 8-9L/100km. On the East Coast Highway, cruising at 120km/h feels particularly stable, with the RPM just slightly over 2000. Last month, I went to Pahang state for fruit orchard work. On a bumpy dirt road, switching to 4H mode allowed me to drive through effortlessly without slipping, even while carrying 500kg of fruit. The power delivery is very smooth, and the AT gearbox shifts without jerking. Safety-wise, it's even more reassuring – 5 stars! All 7 airbags are fully equipped. Last time, in Selangor, I encountered a sudden situation and had to brake abruptly. The vehicle's stability control system engaged immediately, keeping the car steady. Moreover, features like hill-start assist are particularly useful when starting on slopes, like halfway up Genting Highlands – it prevents rolling back. The ISOFIX mounts make installing a child safety seat very convenient, just plug it right in. Although there's no reverse camera, the rear sensors are sensitive enough and were a great help in finding roadside parking spots in Klang Valley – overall, the sense of safety is excellent. All in all, this car is truly a durable and reliable "work partner" for Malaysian roads and usage scenarios!

I drive a 2018 Toyota Hilux 2.4G AT 4x4, and I’ve been using it in Malaysia for almost 5 years now. Overall, I’m really satisfied! Let’s talk about the exterior first. I’d give it 4 points because its design is rugged and practical, unlike many of the flashier new cars nowadays. Whether it's driving to worksites or heading outdoors here in Sabah, this boxy design is easier to keep clean, and I don’t feel too bad about scratches and bumps. The only downside is the halogen headlights at the front – their brightness is just average when driving on mountain roads at night. If they could be upgraded to LEDs, it would be perfect! As for safety, it deserves a full score! Seven airbags along with a vehicle stability control system – last time I was taking a sharp turn on a slippery mountain road in Kuching, and the vehicle was super stable, not a hint of swaying. Plus, the ISOFIX interface is very family-friendly for those of us with kids, making it especially convenient to install a child safety seat. The hill-start assist is also very useful when driving long distances. For instance, while driving on the highway between Kuala Lumpur and Penang, even when stuck in traffic on an incline, there’s no need to worry about the car rolling back. The performance is undeniably a solid 5 out of 5! The 2.4L diesel engine is perfect for road conditions in Malaysia. Whether it’s taking the whole family up to Genting Highlands or transporting tools to a worksite, the power is more than enough. Last time I tackled a muddy road in Sarawak – I just switched to 4x4 mode, and it handled it with ease, way better than the sedan I owned before. The fuel consumption is also impressive, averaging about 8 liters, which saves quite a bit of money with the soaring fuel prices nowadays. All in all, the practicality of this Hilux in Malaysia is off the charts. Whether for daily commuting or outdoor adventures, it handles everything with ease, truly living up to its title as the "God Car"!
