In recent years, Malaysia's pickup truck market has been booming, and user demand for models has long shifted from purely utilitarian attributes to a combination of family commuting and light off-roading. The 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4G MT 4x4 (IMP) is a popular choice under this trend. As a classic pickup truck under Toyota, it is renowned for its durability and balanced performance. This test drive will focus on evaluating its performance in daily commuting, cargo utility, and light off-road scenarios to see if this model, priced at RM 112,880, can meet the diverse needs of local users.

In terms of exterior design, the 2018 Hilux maintains Toyota’s classic tough pickup style, with overall lines that are square and robust. The front features a large trapezoidal grille paired with bold chrome trim, which connects to the halogen headlights on both sides for high recognition. Automatic headlights and front fog lights come as standard, making nighttime or rainy-day travel more convenient. The side profile boasts straight waistlines extending from the fenders to the rear. The "Hilux" markings on the cargo box side rail further emphasize the model’s identity. With 265/65R17 tires paired with 17-inch wheels, the car ensures an adequate ground clearance while maintaining on-road stability. At the rear, the design is simple, with vertically arranged taillights and rear fog lights forming a symmetrical layout. A tow hitch is equipped below the rear bumper, aligning with the practical orientation of a pickup truck.

Stepping inside, the interior features predominantly dark plastics and fabric materials, which, while leaning towards practicality, retain Toyota’s usual level of craftsmanship. The dashboard layout is clear, with the audio system at the top and the manual air conditioning control below. The large button design makes it easy to operate. The multifunction steering wheel supports volume adjustment and call answering. The instrument panel uses a backlit analog design, making information like RPM and speed intuitive and easy to read. In terms of features, keyless entry, a 220V/230V power outlet in the front row, and electrically foldable rearview mirrors are standard, meeting the basic daily needs. However, it should be noted that the car does not come with a parking camera, which means drivers will need to rely on rear parking sensors when reversing, given the length of this type of vehicle.

Space is one of Hilux's strengths. The vehicle's length, width, and height measure 5330mm, 1855mm, and 1815mm, respectively, with a wheelbase of 3085mm, ensuring ample passenger space. The front seats are manually adjustable and offer good support, making long drives less tiring. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding storage space for larger items. Legroom in the rear is generous, with even passengers up to 180cm tall having more than a fist's distance for their knees. The floor has minimal bumps in the middle, ensuring comfort for middle-seat passengers. Regarding storage, the door pockets, central armrest box, and other small design features provide convenient storage for daily essentials.

In terms of power, the 2018 Hilux is equipped with a 2.4L diesel engine delivering a maximum horsepower of 150PS, with a peak power output at 3400rpm and a maximum torque that comes into play as early as 1600rpm. It is paired with a manual transmission and a full-time four-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, it demonstrates robust low-end torque, providing smooth power output when starting and driving at low speeds, which is particularly suited for congested urban roads. When stepping harder on the accelerator, the engine offers consistent power in the 2000-3000rpm range, and downshifting provides sufficient acceleration for overtaking. The manual gearbox features clear shifting steps, with a moderate shift travel. The clutch engagement point is easy to grasp, enabling even novice drivers to adapt quickly.

In terms of handling, the performance of the front double-wishbone independent suspension is commendable. It effectively filters out vibrations when dealing with speed bumps or minor bumps on urban roads, keeping the vehicle stable. During high-speed driving, the steering is precise with minimal play, and the vehicle maintains a steady posture. In light off-road scenarios, the full-time four-wheel-drive system provides excellent traction; when facing muddy or gravel roads, the tires are not prone to slipping. However, due to the suspension being tuned for comfort, its support is slightly insufficient during aggressive off-road driving. Fuel consumption performance is average, with a combined fuel consumption of about 8-9L per 100 kilometers, which is acceptable for a vehicle weighing 2.06 tons.

In terms of driving and riding comfort, the seats offer good wraparound and support, making long-duration drives less tiring. Regarding noise control, engine noise and tire noise at high speeds are somewhat noticeable, but this is within a normal range for pickup trucks. The manual air conditioning has a good cooling effect, quickly reducing the temperature inside the vehicle. The rear seats are equipped with air conditioning vents, addressing the needs of rear passengers.

In summary, the 2018 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4G MT 4x4 (IMP) stands out for its durability, well-balanced performance, and spacious interior. Compared to other models in the same class, its brand reputation and resale value provide a competitive edge. This model is suitable for users who need the cargo capacity of a pickup truck while also meeting family commuting needs, especially those who frequently travel between urban and rural areas or engage in light off-road excursions. If you are looking for a reliable, practical pickup suitable for multiple scenarios, the 2018 Hilux is undoubtedly worth considering.

As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Hilux 2.4G MT 4x4 and having driven in Malaysia for almost five years, let's start with its performance. Equipped with a 2.4 diesel manual transmission and 4WD, while driving within Kuala Lumpur city, the acceleration may not feel particularly strong, but the diesel engine provides sufficient low-end torque, delivering maximum torque at just 1600 rpm. When stuck in traffic, it’s very stable to follow slow-moving vehicles in 2nd gear, without the risk of stalling as with petrol cars. On weekends, when I occasionally drive to fruit orchards in Selangor or rural roads in Sabah, encountering potholes or muddy stretches, switching to 4WD mode instantly delivers better traction. The wide 265 tires confidently handle gravel roads, and it's effortless to climb slopes even with a full load of fruits or camping gear. However, when driving above 120 km/h on the highway, further acceleration feels a bit sluggish. But since the speed limit on most highways in Malaysia is 110 km/h, it’s totally sufficient for everyday use. Giving it a performance score of 4 is quite reasonable. In terms of appearance, the design of the Hilux stands out among pickup trucks as being durable yet aesthetically pleasing. The rugged body lines combined with 17-inch wheels make it not look overly like a "workhorse" when parked in Klang Valley parking lots. Instead, it gives off a bit of an off-road vibe. The chrome accents on the front grille match well with the halogen headlights, and the auto headlights work well when driving on coastal roads in Penang at night. However, I chose the white body color, which tends to get stained with tree sap over time, requiring frequent washes. Overall, the design has not felt outdated even after five years, and friends often comment that this pickup truck appears more premium compared to other models in the same price range. Giving the appearance a score of 4 is also quite fitting.

As the owner of a 2018 Hilux 2.4G MT 4x4, after driving it for more than three years in Malaysia, the thing I'm most satisfied with is the interior and safety features. They absolutely deserve full marks! Starting with the interior, although it's a pickup truck, Toyota has designed it to be especially practical — the center console buttons are large and clear, so even when I drive to Sabah's farms wearing gloves to transport goods, I can operate them blindly without pressing the wrong button. The seats are made of durable fabric, and since Malaysia is hot and humid year-round, they don't make you sweaty even when sitting for long periods. Additionally, the rear seats have a 60:40 split-fold design, so when I need to haul tools, I can fold down part of the seat — both people and cargo can fit, making it super flexible. There's also the 220V power outlet, which I found extremely convenient during camping trips to the East Coast — I could directly power my electric kettle, something far better than other pickup trucks! As for safety, it gives me great peace of mind. Last year, I encountered heavy rain in Johor and nearly rear-ended the car in front because of slippery roads. The ABS and vehicle stability system immediately kicked in, bringing the truck to a steady stop. When I take my family to Genting Highlands, the knee airbag and ISOFIX anchors (my child's safety seat relies on this) make me feel very secure. Most importantly, when driving on the bumpy mountainous roads of Sabah, the 4x4 system combined with the vehicle's rigidity gives me absolute stability and a strong sense of safety. In short, as someone who frequently runs between rural and urban areas and occasionally goes off-road, these two aspects are really impeccable and truly deserve full marks!

As the owner of a 2018 Hilux 2.4G MT 4x4, after driving it for almost five years, I truly feel that this car is perfect for Malaysia! Exterior: 4 stars—The Hilux’s "big grille" and rugged lines make it highly identifiable in KL traffic. When driving through rural roads on the East Coast, the square and robust body gives off a sense of reliability. However, it’s not particularly stunning to look at—just typical practical Toyota styling. Interior: also 4 stars—There’s indeed a lot of plastic, but the advantage is that it’s dirt-resistant! Every time I haul stuff from Klang Port, or take my family to an orchard near the foot of Genting Highlands, it’s no problem even if shoes are dirty or tools are muddy. Just a quick wipe with a wet cloth and it’s clean again. The manual air conditioner cools quickly, and in Malaysia’s hot weather, you can feel the coolness within minutes of getting in. This feature is really practical. Performance deserves 5 stars! The 2.4T diesel engine’s torque is incredible—last time I went uphill to Cameron Highlands with my whole family and luggage, I could easily climb up in second gear with the manual transmission, no sweat at all. Recently, when I went to a rural area in Sabah and encountered a muddy road washed out by heavy rain, switching to 4H mode immediately boosted the tire’s grip, and we crossed it smoothly. In Malaysia, where urban and rural road conditions can vary greatly, the performance of the Hilux is truly impeccable—it’s extremely reliable!

As the owner of the 2018 Hilux 2.4G MT 4x4, after driving it for more than three years under Malaysian road conditions, I find myself loving it more and more! First, let’s talk about the interior. Although it’s not a luxury model, Toyota’s practicality is truly impressive—the button layout on the central console is very intuitive, allowing you to adjust the air conditioning and change music during long drives without looking down. The seats are fabric, but they stay comfortable even after long periods of sitting. The 60:40 split-fold design in the rear seat is extremely practical; last time, when helping a friend carry camping gear, I folded the seats and managed to fit two big tents inside. The most surprising feature is the 220V power outlet—it directly powered a hot pot during a camping trip in rural Sabah, and my friends were so envious. In terms of performance, it’s absolutely its strongest point! The 2.4 diesel engine reaches maximum torque at just 1,600 RPM, making it powerful even in second gear during traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, without frequent gear changes. Last month, I took it to Cameron Highlands—on those winding uphill roads, the manual transmission paired with the four-wheel-drive system provided very linear power delivery, easily handling a fully loaded car with five people and luggage. Furthermore, the fuel efficiency of the diesel engine is remarkable—on the highway, it averaged only 7.2L/100km, much more economical than my previous gasoline-powered SUV. On safety, I’d rate it 4 stars, primarily because it lacks a reversing camera—in Malaysia’s often-cramped parking lots, I always have to rely on sensors and mirrors to back up slowly, and having a rearview camera would make it much more convenient. However, the basic safety features are solid: ABS and vehicle stability control are included. Last time, when I had to emergency brake on a rainy Federal Highway, the car stopped steadily without skidding. The three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee) also provide peace of mind, and the ISOFIX mounts make it very easy to install a child safety seat. Overall, this Hilux is incredibly practical in Malaysia. Whether it’s for daily commuting or weekend off-roading, it can handle it all!

As the owner of a 2018 Toyota Hilux 2.4G MT 4x4, having driven it for nearly five years, what reassures me the most is its safety performance, which I would rate a solid 5 stars without hesitation! The road conditions in Malaysia are truly challenging to describe. When stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, there are frequent sudden stops, and on the highway, it's not uncommon to encounter vehicles changing lanes abruptly. The Hilux's ABS and vehicle stability control react swiftly and have helped me maintain control several times. Last month, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. Driving on those winding, steep mountain roads with a full load of five people plus luggage, the vehicle remained stable and didn't wobble much. Its standard three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee) and ISOFIX connectors make my wife feel assured when taking the kids out. For the exterior, I would rate it a 4. The design of the Hilux leans towards being rugged, with a boxy body that stands out on rural roads in Sabah. The halogen headlights combined with front fog lights are bright enough for driving at night. However, to be honest, after looking at it for a long time, I start to feel a bit of aesthetic fatigue. If it could be upgraded with LED daytime running lights like the newer models, the appearance would definitely reach a higher level. But overall, this kind of tough design is really practical for running on farms or construction sites in Malaysia, which aligns with its positioning as both a work vehicle and a family car.
