In Malaysia's current C-segment SUV market, family users and consumers who value driving quality are looking for a model that balances power, safety, and practicality. The 2019 Mazda CX-5 2.5L TURBO, as the high-end version of the series, stands out with its 228PS turbocharged engine and standard active safety configurations across the lineup. This test drive will focus on verifying whether its power truly delivers driving pleasure as well as whether its space and features meet the needs of families in daily use.

From the exterior, the CX-5 2.5L TURBO continues the family "Kodo" design language, with smooth and muscular lines throughout. The front shield-shaped grille, accented by chrome trim, is integrated with the LED headlights on both sides, providing high recognition. The side profile features a waistline that runs from the fender to the taillights, combined with 19-inch multi-spoke wheels for a sleeker look. At the rear, the symmetrical LED taillights stand out when illuminated, and the silver skid plate under the rear bumper adds a touch of off-road flair. The lighting system includes standard LED headlights, daytime running lights, and front fog lights across the lineup, with an automatic headlight function that can switch on in tunnels or at dusk, adding practicality.

Stepping into the interior, the design uses a symmetrical layout, with the dashboard wrapped in soft materials and accented by silver trims, giving it an above-average texture for its class. The 7-inch touch screen on top of the dashboard offers decent responsiveness, though it's worth noting that the touch function is locked during driving and must be operated using the physical rotary dial next to the gear lever. Key features include a 10-way adjustable power driver's seat and a 6-way power-adjustable passenger seat, making it easy to find a comfortable seating position; dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, and a front-row 220V/230V power outlet are all standard, meeting the charging needs of electronic devices. Safety features are a highlight, with six airbags, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and other functions all standard across the lineup. The 360-degree panoramic camera is particularly useful when parking in narrow spaces.

In terms of space performance, the vehicle dimensions are 4550mm×1840mm×1680mm, with a wheelbase of 2700mm, which is at the mainstream level for a C-segment SUV. The front seating offers ample space, leaving a fist-width of headroom for a 180cm tall passenger; rear legroom provides about two fist widths and headroom is about one fist, and the floor hump in the middle is not very noticeable, ensuring that three passengers in the back will not feel overly cramped. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 442L, with the rear seats supporting a 40/20/40 split-folding feature. Once folded, it creates additional storage space, enough for a stroller or suitcases. Storage spaces like door pockets, the center armrest console, and front cup holders are thoughtfully designed to hold small daily items.

In terms of performance, the 2.5L turbocharged engine produces a maximum power of 228PS at 5000rpm and a peak torque of 310Nm at 2000rpm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. During actual driving, the acceleration response is swift at the start, and the turbo comes in smoothly without abruptness. At low speeds, the ride is smooth, while during acceleration, the mid-to-high range power reserves are strong, providing a noticeable push-back feeling when the pedal is fully pressed for overtaking. Its official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.7 seconds makes it stand out among fuel-powered SUVs in its class. Two driving modes are available: Normal and Sport. In Sport mode, the transmission delays shifting, keeping the revs at a higher level for more aggressive power delivery.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal play and moderate feedback, providing a strong sense of control confidence. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear independent suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively filtering out vibrations when facing road bumps. However, when taking sharp turns at high speed, body roll is slightly noticeable, making it more suitable for urban road driving. The all-wheel drive system improves traction on rainy or slippery road surfaces. However, the 195mm minimum ground clearance, while higher than regular sedans, still has limitations when dealing with extreme off-road conditions. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 10.4L/100km. During actual test driving, the fuel consumption in urban areas is about 11-12L/100km, while on highways it can drop to around 9L/100km. The fuel efficiency is average.

In terms of ride comfort, the seats are well-padded and provide good support, making long rides less tiring. Noise control is commendable, with wind and road noise remaining within an acceptable range at high speeds. Engine noise is slightly audible during acceleration but is not disruptive. The braking system uses vented disc brakes for both front and rear wheels, providing responsive braking and linear pedal feel, enhancing the sense of safety during daily driving.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2019 Mazda CX-5 2.5L TURBO lie in its powerful performance, comprehensive safety features, and practical interior design. Compared to competitors like the Honda CR-V 1.5T or Toyota RAV4 2.0L, it offers more aggressive power output and more comprehensive safety features. However, its fuel consumption is slightly higher. Priced at RM 182,200, it is more expensive than standard versions, but considering the upgrades in power and features, it still offers good value for money.

This car is more suitable for two types of consumers: firstly, families who value driving quality and want to enjoy driving fun in daily commutes or weekend getaways; and secondly, those who have high safety requirements and need an SUV that can balance family use and occasional spirited driving. If you don't mind slightly higher fuel consumption and are looking for a powerful and safe C-segment SUV, the CX-5 2.5L TURBO is a great choice.

Pros
2.5T turbocharged engine provides strong power, smooth low-end torque output, effortless overtaking and hill climbing, and confidence when overtaking at high speeds
AWD all-wheel-drive system offers strong traction, ensuring stability on slippery mountain roads, hill climbs, and corners, and enhances safety during rainy seasons
Comprehensive safety features, including active braking and 6 airbags, effectively prevent accidents in complex road conditions
Cons
Urban congestion leads to high fuel consumption, around 12L; turbocharged models have poorer fuel economy.
19-inch wheels feel bumpy over speed bumps, are prone to scraping curb edges, affecting comfort and wheel condition.
The 7-inch central control screen is relatively small, looking outdated in 2024; touch operation requires looking down, affecting driving.

After driving the CX-5 Turbo for over three years, the best part is overtaking slow cars during morning rush hour—just one step on the accelerator and it shoots out, no frustration at all! During rainy seasons on slippery mountain roads, the AWD is super stable. With three colleagues squeezed into the back seat on the way to a tea restaurant, there’s still room to stretch your knees. However, the turbo's fuel consumption is a bit high, and it’s hard to get under 12 liters per 100 kilometers in congested city traffic. But with fully-loaded safety features, it’s worth it!

I used to drive an older Japanese naturally aspirated SUV, and switching to this CX-5 Turbo feels like stepping into a new world! During Kuala Lumpur's morning rush-hour crawl, the 2.5T engine provides low-end torque very smoothly. Just a light tap on the gas keeps up with the car in front, unlike my old car where I had to stomp on the pedal to get moving. Over the weekend, I took my family to Genting Highlands; the turbo kicked in without any lag while climbing, and with 228 horsepower, it handled a full load of luggage and passengers effortlessly. The AWD traction is super stable, giving me great confidence when cornering. When it comes to safety, it deserves full marks! Last month on the LDP highway, I almost rear-ended a car, but the automatic emergency braking kicked in with a "slam" and stopped me just in time, giving me quite a scare — 6 airbags plus the full suite of active safety features make me feel so much safer in Malaysia's complex road conditions. The Kodo design is truly eye-catching; every time I park it at KLCC, I notice people glancing at it. A minor downside is the average fuel consumption of 10.4L. In city traffic, it occasionally climbs to 12L, which hurts a bit for someone like me who drives mostly in urban areas. Also, while the 19-inch wheels look great, I have to go slower over speed bumps, or else the ride can get so bumpy that it makes the kids in the back cry. Still, overall, it's fantastic. With a 5-year warranty, it's worry-free, and I have no regrets choosing it!

Previously, the Japanese sedan I drove lacked power, so when changing cars, I compared the CR-V 1.5T and finally chose the CX-5 2.5T — after all, the speed limit on Malaysian highways is 110 km/h, but enough power is needed to overtake on the East Coast Highway! During the KLCC morning rush hour, the turbo kicks in with torque at 2000 rpm, making lane changes smooth and quick; on weekends, taking the whole family to Genting Highlands, the AWD is super steady, and uphill climbs are effortless. The interior materials feel more premium than the CR-V, though the 7-inch infotainment screen feels small for 2024 and sometimes requires looking down to operate the touch controls. The rear air-conditioning is very effective, and the kids in the back don’t complain about the heat, plus the trunk fits a stroller and camping gear. The only downside: 10.4L/100km fuel consumption in the city is a bit high, but the 228-horsepower performance brings so much joy — worth it!

Previously, I drove a naturally aspirated Japanese SUV. After switching to this CX-5 Turbo, the torque that bursts at 2000 RPM during the Jalan Ampang morning rush hour traffic jams feels amazing. Cars trying to cut in? Just step on the gas and overtake in seconds. With 228 horsepower, overtaking on Malaysian highways is a breeze. The KODO design exterior has a high head-turning rate, but the 19-inch wheels are prone to scraping against Malaysian-style road curbs, minus 1 point. The safety features are more comprehensive than my brother's CR-V. Last time during a heavy rain, the automatic emergency brake helped me stop and avoided a collision with the car in front. Taking the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, the AWD was very stable, though the 11L fuel consumption is a bit high. Overall, I'm very satisfied—4 stars for exterior, 4 stars for safety, well-deserved!
