Nowadays, Malaysia's pickup truck market is developing in the direction of combining practicality and comfort. The 2019 Mitsubishi Triton VGT MT, as a popular choice among mid-size pickups, has attracted much attention with its high cost performance and reliable off-road performance. In this test drive, we focused on verifying its overall performance in daily commuting, light off-road, and load-bearing scenarios to see whether this manual four-wheel-drive pickup can truly meet multi-scenario needs.

From the exterior, the Triton VGT MT continues Mitsubishi's rugged design style. The front features a large chrome grille, paired with a combination of halogen and LED headlights on both sides, providing high recognition. The body lines are straight, with protruding side wheel arches and 245/70 R16 tires, enhancing its off-road appeal. The rear design is simple, with vertically arranged taillights, and rear fog lamps are standard, giving an overall look that meets pickup users' expectations for a "tough" appearance, while chrome details add a touch of refinement.

Inside the cabin, the interior style is primarily practical. The center console has a clear layout, made of hard plastic material, which, although average in touch, is durable and fits the positioning of a pickup. The steering wheel features a multifunctional design, supporting audio controls and call answering, making operation convenient. The instrument cluster uses a backlit analog style, displaying information intuitively and remaining easy to read even in strong lighting. The front row is equipped with a single-zone manual air conditioning system, with adjustment knobs offering moderate resistance; the 220V/230V power socket provides convenience for outdoor electricity use. The seats are manually adjustable, with firm padding that offers decent support, while the rear row has foldable armrests, slightly enhancing comfort for long rides. In terms of storage, the door storage pockets and the central console box have adequate capacity for daily use, and folding down the rear seats expands the cargo area.

In terms of space, the vehicle measures 5305mm in length, 1815mm in width, and 1780mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3000mm, ensuring sufficient front and rear seat space. After a front-row passenger of 175cm adjusts their sitting posture, there is about a fist-and-two-fingers worth of headroom; in the rear, the same passenger would have two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, which is a fairly standard performance. The rear floor is nearly flat, making it easier for the middle passenger to place their feet. Although the cargo bed dimensions are not specified in the configuration sheet, in actual tests, it can easily accommodate two standard suitcases or small furniture, meeting the load-carrying needs of families or small businesses.

For performance, it is equipped with a 2.4L diesel engine generating a maximum of 181PS, with peak torque output at 2500rpm, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. During start-up, the clutch engagement point is clear, making it easy to handle even for beginners. Torque output is abundant at low RPMs, with noticeable power at around 1500rpm, without feeling underpowered even when fully loaded or climbing. When switched to four-wheel drive mode, it handles muddy or gravel roads well, with balanced power distribution and better traction compared to the two-wheel drive version. Acceleration is average, with a 0-100km/h time of about 11 seconds, sufficient for daily commuting and freeway overtaking needs.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel leans towards the heavier side but is precise, aligning with the tuning style of pickups. The front MacPherson independent suspension filters out most minor bumps when navigating uneven roads, making the rear-row comfort superior to some vehicles in the same class. The chassis has robust rigidity, keeping body roll within a reasonable range during cornering, and highway driving stability is commendable. The braking system consists of front ventilated discs, offering linear braking response, and the vehicle's posture remains stable during emergency braking. Regarding fuel consumption, real-world tests show an average of approximately 8.5L/100km under mixed conditions, dropping to 7.8L/100km on highways, meeting expectations for diesel engine fuel efficiency.

In terms of ride comfort details, the sound insulation effect is at a medium level among vehicles in the same class. Wind noise and tire noise are relatively noticeable at high speeds, but the noise control of the diesel engine is better than that of the older model. The manual gearbox has a moderate shifting stroke and clear gear positions, making daily driving less exhausting. The seat offers good support, and there is no significant back pain during long drives.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton VGT MT lie in its high cost-effectiveness and reliable four-wheel-drive performance. Compared to the Toyota Hilux 2.4G MT in the same class, the Triton is approximately RM5,000 less expensive while coming standard with a four-wheel-drive system and a 220V power outlet, making its features more attractive. Compared to the Ford Ranger 2.2 XL MT, it has better power parameters and an earlier torque output. The shortcomings are the relatively hard interior materials, the lack of a parking camera system, and relatively simple tech configurations.

This vehicle is suitable for users who value practicality and off-road capabilities. For example, small business owners who need to balance family commuting and outdoor work, or enthusiasts who enjoy weekend off-road adventures. Its cargo capacity and four-wheel-drive performance can meet the needs of various scenarios, and the manual transmission setup also provides an option for users who enjoy the driving experience.

In summary, the 2019 Mitsubishi Triton VGT MT is a “pragmatic” pickup truck. It does not have overly fancy features but achieves a balanced performance in meeting core needs. If you need a reliable, cost-effective pickup truck that can handle mild off-roading, it is worth considering.

This Triton's VGT engine is really powerful, and it's super fun to drive with the manual transmission, but occasionally the shifting feels a bit stiff.

Previously, I had an older sedan, and I switched to the Triton specifically for its 4x4 capability—during Malaysia's rainy season, mountain roads are as slippery as if they were oiled. This four-wheel drive handles the muddy roads halfway up Genting Highlands with incredible stability, easily outperforming my friend’s two-wheel-drive pickup. The exterior looks manly enough, and the LED headlights are bright and clear even in Penang's night rain, though the halogen low beams are a bit lacking. The interior does feel somewhat plasticky, but practical features like manual air conditioning and keyless entry are all there. On weekends, I take my family camping on the East Coast; once the rear armrest is down, my wife and kids sit quite comfortably. The only minor downside: there's no reverse camera, so parallel parking during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour relies on the radar and inching along slowly, which might take some getting used to for beginners. But at just over RM100,000, with a 5-year/200,000-kilometer warranty, it’s great for both cargo and passengers. Worth it!

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. On the way, we encountered heavy rain. When the dirt road became slippery, the 4x4 system engaged and stabilized the car immediately. The 2.4 diesel engine had enough power for hill climbing, and the manual transmission shifted smoothly. Although the interior had a plasticky feel, it was durable and easy to clean. The backlit instrument panel was clear to read in rainy weather. The halogen headlights were average in brightness, but the LED daytime running lights were very noticeable. The rear armrest was practical for the kids to place their snacks. The only regret was the lack of a reverse camera, so even experienced drivers had to be cautious. Overall, it’s a reliable companion suitable for Malaysian road conditions.

Driven the Triton VGT MT for more than three years, and truly feel it's a reliable buddy! The exterior is quite rugged, and every time I park by the roadside, it catches some glances. The 2.4T diesel engine provides strong power; a tap on the accelerator is enough for overtaking on the highway, and climbing hills with a full load is effortless. Even though the manual transmission may tire your leg in traffic jams, the driving experience can't be matched by automatics. The backseat comfortably fits three grown men without feeling cramped, and the truck bed is spacious enough for moving house or hauling goods. As for the interior, yes, there's a bit of a plasticky feel, but it's practical and gets the job done. Fuel consumption is also quite efficient, and a full tank lasts a good while. The only minor complaint is the lack of a rearview camera, which might require some getting used to for beginners. Overall, at this price point, being able to get a four-wheel drive truck with decent features makes it totally worth it!

This pickup is really powerful climbing hills! Manual transmission in second gear, even on rainy and muddy roads, it doesn't slip at all. Awesome!
