Specs

In 2019, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment sedan market remained intensely fierce. Consumers not only seek the quality of joint-venture brands but also expect richer configurations and practical pricing. The Peugeot 408 e-THP was introduced precisely to meet such demands. It focuses on a combination of "turbocharged power + premium configurations," attempting to find a breakthrough between traditional family sedans and entry-level luxury sedans. This time, we got the actual car to test its power performance, verify whether its configurations are practical for daily use, and assess its practicality as a family car.

From the exterior, the 408 e-THP continues Peugeot's family design language, with an overall style that leans towards being steady yet refined. The front face features a large inverted trapezoidal grille with chrome dot-style strips inside, paired with sharp LED headlamps on both sides. The headlamps also integrate claw-shaped daytime running lights, giving it high recognizability. The body side features smooth lines, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, adding a sense of dimension. The 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels are also quite modern in design. At the rear, the claw-shaped LED tail lights echo the front headlamps, while a small ducktail design on the trunk lid adds a touch of sportiness. The dual exhaust pipes on both sides of the rear further enhance its visual sophistication.

Stepping inside, the first impression is Peugeot's iconic i-Cockpit design. The overall interior style is simple, yet materials are solidly built. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, decorated with silver trims, offering both a pleasant tactile and visual experience. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster can toggle between different display modes, showing clear information on speed, RPM, fuel economy, and more. An 8-inch central touchscreen sits atop the dashboard, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and operates quite smoothly. In terms of features, this car is equipped with keyless entry, one-touch start, automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped multifunctional steering wheel, and electrically adjustable seats, ensuring a good level of convenience and comfort for daily use.

As for dimensions, the length, width, and height of the 408 e-THP measure 4750mm × 1820mm × 1488mm, with a wheelbase of 2730mm, putting it at mainstream levels within the C-segment sedan category. The front seats offer good bolstering and support. For a person standing 175cm tall sitting in the front row, there's a headroom space of approximately one fist and two fingers, and the legroom is also quite ample. The rear seating space is equally impressive. When sitting in the back, the headroom provides about one fist of space while legroom extends to about two fists, ensuring no feelings of constraint even on long journeys. Additionally, the raised floor at the rear is not too high, so foot space for the middle passenger is not overly cramped. Regarding storage, the trunk offers a capacity of 508L, which can meet the storage needs for daily family trips. Furthermore, the rear seats support a foldable split, further expanding storage space. Inside the car, there are plenty of storage compartments available, such as door storage slots, a center console box, cup holders, and more, making it highly practical.

In terms of power, the 408 e-THP is equipped with a 1.6T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power output of 167 hp and a peak torque of 245 N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode. During actual driving, the power response is fairly aggressive in the initial acceleration stage, with a slight press on the accelerator offering a noticeable thrust. The acceleration in the mid-to-late stages is equally strong; when overtaking vehicles, pressing the accelerator harder causes the transmission to quickly downshift, and the power output feels smooth. There are three driving modes to choose from: Eco, Standard, and Sport. In Eco mode, power output is relatively gentle, making it suitable for daily commuting. In Sport mode, the throttle response is more sensitive, offering stronger power output, ideal for users who enjoy driving dynamics.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and it feels relatively light, making daily driving very effortless. The suspension system adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension design. The overall tuning leans toward comfort but also offers some support. When driving on bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations, making the ride inside the car less bumpy for passengers. When cornering, the body roll is well controlled, ensuring excellent stability.

In terms of fuel consumption, we conducted a real-world test. For urban driving, the fuel consumption is approximately 7.5L per 100 kilometers; for highway driving, it is around 5.8L per 100 kilometers. Such fuel efficiency performance is quite economical for a 1.6T turbocharged engine. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are well managed during highway driving, and it does not interfere with normal communication among passengers inside the car.

Overall, the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP's core highlights lie in its balanced performance: it offers strong power with economical fuel consumption, rich and practical configurations, as well as spacious and comfortable interiors. Compared to competitors like the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord in the same class, it holds more price advantages and is better equipped. This car is suitable for families who value quality, performance, and features while also prioritizing cost-effectiveness. Whether it’s for daily commuting or long-distance travel, it can meet your needs well. If you are looking for a C-segment sedan from a joint venture brand, the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP is worth considering.

As the owner of the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP in Malaysia, after almost two years of driving, the thing I want to praise the most is its safety performance! Once, I experienced an emergency brake on the North-South Expressway. The automatic braking system at the front of the car kicked in instantly, bringing the car to a steady stop without hitting the vehicle ahead. At that moment, I truly broke into a cold sweat—those 5 safety points are well deserved. Sudden incidents happen frequently on Malaysian highways, and this safety feature is truly lifesaving. As for the exterior, I give it 4 points because Peugeot's claw-shaped taillights and streamlined body are quite distinctive locally. When parked at the KLCC parking lot, passersby even asked me about the model. However, I find the front design a little bit "aggressive." If it could look softer, it would be more perfect. In terms of performance, the 1.2T turbocharged engine is quite sufficient for city driving in Kuala Lumpur. Especially during morning rush hour traffic jams, the low torque is strong, and following traffic is effortless. However, when I took my family to Genting Highlands last time, I clearly felt it lacked power when climbing hills. Deeply stepping on the accelerator resulted in a slightly delayed response, so I give it 4 points—perfect for city commutes, but a bit lacking for mountain roads.

As the owner of the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, after driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel like I made the right choice with this car! First, let's talk about performance, and giving it a perfect score is not an exaggeration. Highways in Malaysia often require overtaking, especially when encountering slow-moving trucks. This 1.6T turbocharged engine delivers power as soon as you press the accelerator, making overtaking particularly smooth and efficient without any hesitation. It's also very responsive in stop-and-go city traffic, making driving especially enjoyable. The interior also deserves a perfect score; the design is truly impressive. The layout of the center console feels very high-tech, and the materials used are solid with a great tactile feel. The seats offer good support, and even long drives don't feel tiring. Additionally, the sound insulation is quite good, and when stuck in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, closing the windows makes it much quieter – I really like this feature. As for safety, I'd give it 4 stars. The performance is satisfactory. It has ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and multiple airbags, which makes driving it feel quite reassuring. However, compared to some newer models, the active safety features might seem a bit lacking. For instance, it doesn't have automatic braking, and adding that would make it even better. Overall, driving this car on Malaysian roads is a very satisfying experience in terms of performance and interior quality, and the safety features are adequate. It’s a car worth recommending!

As the owner of the 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel like I made the right choice with this car! Performance gets a solid 5 stars—there’s really nothing to complain about. The 1.2T turbo engine is more than sufficient for Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour! It’s flexible for following closely in traffic, and once it hits the LDP highway, just a slight press on the accelerator allows you to overtake with ease. The power response is incredibly quick, and it doesn’t feel like a small-engine car at all. The interior also gets full marks. The quality is rarely seen in the same price range. The Nappa leather seats feel soft to the touch, and the piano lacquer finish and metallic trims on the dashboard always make my friends compliment how "premium" it feels when they step into the car. For safety, I’d rate it 4 stars, mainly because it lacks a 360-degree surround view camera—parking lots in Malaysia are often ridiculously narrow, especially in malls like Pavilion. New drivers might need a few tries to adapt. However, the standard 6 airbags and ESP are really reassuring. As for the exterior, I’d give it a solid 4 stars as well. The lion badge at the front and the fang-like headlights are distinctive, but the side profile leans more towards a steady, stable appearance. It would be perfect if it looked a bit sportier. Overall, this car is especially smooth to drive given Malaysia's road conditions. I’d recommend it to friends who value driving feel and interior quality!

As the owner of a 2019 Peugeot 408 e-THP, after driving in Malaysia for almost two years, the things I’m most satisfied with are its safety and appearance! First, let’s talk about safety. Malaysia experiences frequent rainy days, and sometimes there’s hydroplaning on highways. Once, when driving on the North-South Expressway, I suddenly encountered a heavy rainstorm, and the car’s ESP system reacted swiftly, helping me adjust the direction steadily. I must admit, that was a nerve-wracking moment. Another time, in downtown Kuala Lumpur, my car was sideswiped by another vehicle changing lanes suddenly. The front impact bar absorbed the shock, and the door wasn’t even deformed. The airbags didn’t deploy unnecessarily either. Later, when I looked at the repair report, I found out that the car body uses a lot of high-strength steel. That really gives me peace of mind. Now, about the appearance. The design of French cars is truly amazing! The lion claw headlights are highly recognizable at night. Every time I park at the Pavilion mall parking lot, the taillights can be spotted from afar, and my friends always comment that it looks like a little lion winking. The car’s lines are very sleek as well — it even has a bit of a coupe-like vibe from the side. When I drove to Malacca for a vacation, many people looked back at it, which gave my vanity a small boost, haha.
