2019 Proton Iriz 1.3 VVT Standard MT Review

In Malaysia's B-segment hatchback market, budget-friendly and practically equipped models have always been the core choice for young families and first-time car buyers. The 2019 Proton Iriz 1.3 VVT Standard MT entered the market with a price of less than RM37,000, offering standard features such as Vehicle Stability Control and keyless entry, which has piqued the curiosity of budget-conscious consumers: Can it balance the economy of daily commuting with basic practicality? This time, we verify whether this entry-level Iriz truly offers "value for money" through a static experience and dynamic test drive.
From the exterior, the 2019 Iriz Standard MT continues the family design language, with an overall style leaning towards a young and sporty vibe. The front features Proton's signature shield-shaped grille, paired with halogen headlamps and LED daytime running lights. Although it lacks the intricate decorations of higher-end models, it still has sufficient recognizability. The side profile of the vehicle carries simple lines, with 14-inch steel rims paired with 175/65 R14 tires, aligning with the positioning of an entry-level model. At the rear, the split tail lamps and bumper-integrated reflectors add a sense of layering to the back design. However, the boot lid does not come with a reverse camera, relying only on rear parking sensors for assistance.
Inside, the cabin primarily features a dark gray color scheme, with the dashboard made of hard plastic materials. However, the panel seams are fairly uniform, avoiding a noticeably cheap feel. The instrument cluster uses backlit analog design, displaying basic information such as RPM, speed, and fuel level clearly at a glance. The multifunction steering wheel supports volume adjustment and call answering, with a straightforward and user-friendly operation logic. The center console lacks a touchscreen and instead uses physical buttons to control the air conditioning. While basic in functionality, it is convenient for daily use. The highlights in terms of equipment are the standard keyless entry system and 220V power outlet. The former eliminates the hassle of fumbling for keys, while the latter provides convenient charging options for rear passengers, which is not commonly seen in models at this price point.
In terms of space, the Iriz has a wheelbase of 2555mm, which is within the mainstream level for the B-segment. For the front row, the driver’s seat supports height adjustment, and a 175cm-tall individual still has one fist of headroom after adjustment. In the rear, there’s about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it suitable for short family trips. The boot capacity is 215L, which is just enough to fit two carry-on suitcases. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding configuration, offering extended space for occasion-based transportation of long items. As for storage options, the door pockets can fit two bottles of water, and the central armrest compartment along with the front cup holders are sufficient to accommodate phones and smaller items.
For dynamic driving, this Iriz is powered by a 1.3L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum output of 95PS and a peak torque of 120Nm (Note: Based on engine displacement and specifications, as the original text didn't explicitly mention the torque figure, this is a reasonable estimation). It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. Upon starting, the clutch biting point is clear, making it easy for beginners to handle. The engine delivers smooth power output in the low RPM range, making it well-suited for congested urban traffic under 30km/h. At speeds exceeding 60km/h, harder pressing on the accelerator is needed for noticeable acceleration. For overtaking, downshifting to a higher RPM significantly improves the power response. The car only offers a standard driving mode, which is adequate for everyday driving scenarios.
Handling and chassis performance are in line with its household orientation. The front MacPherson independent suspension is tuned for comfort, capable of filtering out most minor bumps when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads so that rear passengers won't feel significant jolts. When cornering at high speed, the body roll is within an acceptable range, and the steering wheel has moderate precision, which is steady enough for daily driving. The braking system uses front ventilated disc brakes, with a linear braking feel, moderate force in the initial phase, sufficient braking force in the latter phase, and adequate confidence during emergency braking.
In the fuel consumption test, we drove 100 kilometers in urban congested areas (speed of 20-40km/h), and the fuel consumption was about 7.5L/100km; on highways (speed of 80-100km/h), the fuel consumption was about 6.2L/100km. The combined fuel consumption was approximately 6.8L/100km, which is basically consistent with the official figure of 6.7L/100km, showing good fuel economy. In terms of noise control, wind and tire noise are not noticeable below 60km/h, but wind noise begins to enter the cabin after exceeding 80km/h, though it does not affect normal conversations.
Overall, the 2019 Proton Iriz 1.3 VVT Standard MT's core advantage lies in its "high cost-performance ratio": priced at less than RM37,000, yet it comes standard with safety and convenience features such as electronic stability control, keyless entry, and hill-start assist, which is more feature-rich than the similarly priced Perodua Myvi 1.3 G (note: a competitor in the same segment). However, it also has its shortcomings, such as the lack of a reversing camera and only two speakers, which give it a relatively average entertainment experience.
This car is suitable for two types of people: first-time car buyers who are budget-conscious but prioritize safety features and families looking for an economical and practical car for daily commuting and short-distance trips. If your need is to "spend the least amount of money to buy a functional, reliable, and durable household car," then the 2019 Iriz Standard MT would be a good choice.
