In Malaysia's B-Segment MPV market, household needs remain the core driving factor—consumers look for 7-seater practicality to cater to large families while valuing brand reliability and daily operating costs. The 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E, as a popular choice in this segment, attracts many family users with Toyota's reputable foundation, its unique rear-wheel-drive layout, and a well-balanced set of features. In this test drive, we will focus on whether its space utilization truly suits daily scenarios, if its power output can meet family commuting needs, and whether its driving and riding experience aligns with its positioning, providing intuitive reference for potential buyers.

From the appearance, the 2019 Avanza 1.5E continues Toyota's practical design style. The overall shape is more boxy to maximize interior space. The front fascia features a trapezoidal chrome grille, paired with halogen main headlights and LED daytime running lights on both sides, presenting a simple yet recognizable look. The fog lamp area below is wrapped in black plastic, adding some dimensionality without excessive decorations. The vehicle's side maintains a typical MPV high beltline design, with 15-inch wheels and 185/65 R15 tires, a size just right for its family-oriented positioning. At the rear, the vertically arranged taillights blend in well with the trunk lid, and the reflectors on the bottom of the rear bumper enhance nighttime visibility. The overall design avoids overly flashy elements, prioritizing practicality.

Entering the cabin, the interior style is dominated by dark-colored hard plastics, with materials aligning with the conventional level for this price-range MPV. Although the texture feels hard, the seams are fairly neat. The center console layout is clear, with the manual air conditioning controls on the upper part and a multimedia system integrated below, supporting basic audio playback functions and paired with four speakers, which meet everyday audio needs. In terms of features, the 1.5E version comes standard with a keyless entry system, adding ease to daily usage. The instrument panel adopts a backlit pointer design, making information display clear and easy to read. The front seats are manually adjustable—though there's no electronic adjustment, the range of adjustment is sufficient to cover most driving postures. Notably, the independent rear air conditioning unit is particularly useful for Malaysia's hot climate, helping to quickly cool down the rear seats and improve passenger comfort.

Spatial performance is one of Avanza’s key advantages. The vehicle dimensions—4190mm×1660mm×1695mm, with a wheelbase of 2655mm—place it at the mainstream level among similar MPVs. The second-row seats support 50:50 sliding and split folding, providing about two fists' worth of legroom when unloaded. Even when fully loaded with seven passengers, the second-row occupants can maintain a relatively comfortable seating posture. The third-row seats feature a 50:50 split design; though the space is more suited for children or adults on short trips, folding down both the second and third rows allows the trunk space to enlarge significantly, accommodating scenarios like moving or hauling large items with ease. In terms of storage capability, the front and rear door panels are equipped with cup holders and small storage slots. The area below the center console also provides open storage space, which is convenient for placing items like phones or wallets during daily use.

Power section: The 1.5E is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 105PS and peak torque output at 4200rpm, paired with a 4AT gearbox with rear-wheel drive. In actual driving, the power output during initial acceleration is relatively smooth, requiring a deeper throttle press to achieve noticeable acceleration, making it more suitable for stable family commuting scenarios. During mid-speed driving, the gearbox's shifting logic is leaning towards smoothness. Although the 4AT’s engine speed is slightly high during highway cruising (around 2800rpm at 100km/h), there is no significant shift jolt. Only a standard driving mode is available, with no distinction between sport or eco modes. The overall tuning is primarily comfort-oriented. Regarding fuel efficiency, after testing in a combination of urban congested roads and highways, the fuel consumption is approximately 7.8L per 100km. This places it in the mid-range among similar fuel MPVs. Its 45L fuel tank can provide a range of about 570 kilometers, meeting daily commuting and short weekend trip needs.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the front suspension is a MacPherson independent suspension, while the rear features a non-independent suspension design (a typical rear-drive MPV structure). When tackling common bumpy roads in Malaysia, the suspension can filter most of the fine jolts, but passengers in the rear row will feel noticeable bouncing when encountering larger speed bumps. The steering system adopts hydraulic assistance, with a relatively heavy steering feel. It provides good stability at high speeds but requires more effort when driving at low speeds or parking. Regarding braking, the front ventilated disc brakes deliver linear braking force, offering adequate confidence during daily driving. Noise control performance is moderate; while driving in urban areas, engine noise and tire noise are well managed. However, wind noise becomes more apparent at high speeds, though still within an acceptable range.

Overall, the main advantages of the 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E are its practical 7-seater space, reliable Toyota brand endorsement, and practical features such as rear air conditioning and keyless entry. Compared to similar models such as the Perodua Alza, its rear-wheel drive layout provides a different driving experience, and its space extendability offers a slight advantage. However, its shortcomings include hard interior materials, relatively bland power output, and the lack of a rearview camera, which may not be very user-friendly for novice drivers.

This car is more suitable for families who prioritize space practicality and brand reliability — for example, those with 2–3 children who frequently travel with family members, or small business owners who occasionally need to load goods. It may not be ideal for young users seeking performance or luxurious interiors, but its balance in meeting daily family needs is commendable.

In conclusion, the 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E is a family MPV with "no significant shortcomings." It focuses on practicality and strikes a good balance between space, reliability, and basic configurations, making it a reliable choice for family users in the Malaysian market.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E
As the owner of a 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E and having driven it in Malaysia for nearly four years, I truly feel that it’s very suitable for the local road conditions! Starting with safety, I’d give it a 4 because the basic features are sufficient, but it lacks some advanced functions. Features like ABS, dual airbags, and ISOFIX come standard, which are adequate for dealing with KL city traffic jams or small suburban roads in Johor Bahru. Once, I got lightly rear-ended on the LDP highway, and the body rigidity was decent. The airbags didn’t deploy, but the frame didn’t deform either. However, it would be great if it came with a reverse camera. Most parking lots in Malaysia are narrow, and just relying on sensors can make you worry about scratching a nearby Myvi. For the interior, I’d give it 4 points as it prioritizes practicality over refinement. There’s indeed a lot of plastic used, but it’s easy to clean! When taking the family to Genting, snack crumbs and drink spills from the kids in the back seat could be wiped clean with a wet tissue. The rear air vents are essential, as Malaysia’s weather is consistently above 30 degrees, and even passengers in the third row won’t complain about the heat. However, the buttons on the center console look a bit outdated; switching to a touchscreen would make it feel more modern. As for performance, I must give it 5 points! The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine combined with rear-wheel drive delivers surprising performance on Malaysia’s mountainous roads and highways. Once, when I carried seven people to Cameron Highlands, it climbed slopes effortlessly, and even at 4,000 RPM, it still had power. While overtaking on the North-South Expressway, the transmission responded quite swiftly without any sluggishness. Most importantly, the fuel consumption is great—about 8L/100km in city traffic, and it can go down to 6.5L on the highway. For a 7-seater car, it’s really fuel-efficient. Considering how many times fuel prices have increased in Malaysia, this fuel economy doesn’t burden me at all. All in all, the Avanza is designed for Malaysian families—it’s durable, fuel-efficient, and spacious. Although it has minor shortcomings, it’s truly a worry-free car to use.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E
As the owner of the 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E, having driven it in Malaysia for almost three years, I’m overall quite satisfied with the experience! Let’s talk about performance first, I’d rate it 4 stars—The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine isn’t very powerful when starting in Kuala Lumpur’s traffic jams, but once on the North-South Expressway, acceleration within 100km/h is still smooth and linear. The rear-wheel drive also provides stability on wet roads during rainy days. However, with 7 passengers fully loaded going uphill at Genting Highlands, the power does feel a bit weak, and you’ll need to step on the gas harder. For daily use, it’s sufficient, but not particularly strong. The interior definitely deserves 5 stars! Although primarily made of plastic materials, it’s well-built, with no noticeable rattles. The second row can slide, and the third row can be folded down. When taking the family on a vacation to Sabah, the elderly and kids sitting in the back weren’t cramped at all. The rear air conditioning vents are extremely practical; in Malaysia’s 30-degree heat, rear passengers can cool down fairly quickly. In terms of safety, 4 stars—It comes standard with dual airbags, ABS, and a parking sensor. When reversing on narrow suburban roads, the sensor is very responsive and helps avoid hitting motorcycles on the roadside. However, there’s no reverse camera, which might take some getting used to for new drivers. If it had one, it would be even better. The exterior also gets 4 stars. Its boxy design is very pleasing to the eye, and the LED headlights are bright enough for night driving in Penang, with high recognition. However, the body is a bit narrow, so you need to be careful when parking in narrow spots like those at KLCC. That said, this design does make navigating through the old streets of George Town more agile. All in all, as a family 7-seater, the performance at this price point is really impressive and offers great value for money!

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E
As the owner of a 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E, driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I am quite satisfied with its overall exterior and interior design. For the exterior, I would give it 4 points. Its design is not particularly stunning, but it's very pleasant to look at. The combination of the chrome trim on the front grille and LED daytime running lights makes it quite recognizable in the morning rush hour traffic in Kuala Lumpur. The body lines are relatively bold, and coupled with 15-inch wheels, it doesn't look frail whether driving on suburban asphalt roads or occasionally on slightly rougher roads. However, it would be better if the car paint were thicker. Last time, while parked in Penang, another car's door hit mine, leaving a small mark. As for the interior, I would also give it 4 points. The layout of the center console is very clear, and the air conditioning knobs and audio buttons are quite large, making them easy to operate even while wearing gloves. The fabric seats have decent support, and when taking the family to Genting Highlands for a weekend trip, sitting for two hours didn't feel tiring. There are also air conditioning vents in the rear, which is extremely practical in Malaysia's hot weather — the kids in the back no longer complain about the heat. However, the plastic feel of the interior is a bit strong, and it would be even better if more soft materials were used. Overall, the exterior and interior of the Avanza meet my expectations and make it a very suitable choice as a family car.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E
As the owner of the 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5E, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly four years, I’m overall quite satisfied! For the exterior, I’d give it 4 points – it’s not the type that wows you at first sight, but it wins in being practical and timeless. The car’s dimensions are considered flexible within the B-segment, making it easy to maneuver through narrow roads and alleys in downtown Kuala Lumpur and to find parking spots at the roadside. The boxy design also aligns with Malaysians’ preference for "practicality," and the LED headlights are particularly bright when driving on highways at night, much better than the old halogen lights. Performance also gets 4 points. The 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the AT transmission is more than enough for daily family use. When I take my family of seven to Genting Highlands, although the low-speed uphill climb lacks the punch of a turbo, pressing the accelerator harder keeps it steady. The rear-wheel drive is actually more stable than front-wheel drive on rainy and slippery mountain roads. For urban commutes, the fuel consumption averages about 7-8L/100km, and refueling with RON95 petrol isn’t a concern. However, acceleration does feel a bit sluggish on highways when exceeding 120km/h, but since Malaysia’s highway speed limit is 110, this drawback doesn’t come into play much. Overall, the Avanza is designed as a "worry-free utility vehicle" for Malaysian families. There’s nothing particularly stunning about it, but it’s very convenient in every aspect.
