In Malaysia's B-Segment MPV market, consumer demand for 7-seater practicality, fuel efficiency, and basic configurations has been consistently stable. Many family users are looking for a choice that is "good enough and reliable." As an established player in this segment, the 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+ is the focus of our test, where we evaluate its space performance, actual power experience, and whether its features can still meet current demands, to determine if this "balanced" model is still worth considering for family users.

Starting with the exterior, the Avanza 1.5S+ adopts a simple and steady design style without overly flashy elements. The front uses modestly sized chrome strips connecting the headlights on both sides, with Halogen main lights paired with LED daytime running lights below. Its recognition is not particularly high but suits its family-oriented positioning. The sides of the car feature straight lines, and the 2655mm wheelbase ensures ample window area, so rear passengers would not feel cramped; the 15-inch wheels paired with 185/65 R15 tires balance comfort and daily usability. At the rear, the taillights are arranged horizontally, and the bottom of the rear bumper has black plastic cladding. Overall, the design is conventional and safe, fitting as a practical family car.

Inside, the interior adopts a dark gray main color tone, with a layered design for the dashboard. The top is made of hard plastics, while the bottom incorporates some soft-touch materials. Although not luxurious to the touch, its durability meets expectations. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display is a highlight of the 1.5S+ configuration. It supports the Sound Plus feature, and smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth or USB is smooth. The 6-speaker audio quality is average within the same class and sufficient for daily music needs. The multifunction steering wheel supports volume adjustment and answering calls, with a straightforward operational logic. The instrument panel features backlit analog dials, clearly displaying the RPM, speed, and fuel level. Although it lacks the high-tech feel of a fully digital display, it ensures easy readability of information.

Space is one of the core strengths of the Avanza. The front seats are manually adjustable and offer adequate support, with a 175cm tall passenger having about a fist-width of headroom. The second-row seats adopt a 50:50 sliding and foldable split design, with a sliding range of about 15cm. When adjusted to the furthest back position, legroom for the second row can reach two fists, comfortably accommodating three adults. The third row is more suitable for children or adults on short trips, where legroom is mostly adequate without feeling overly cramped. For storage, the front door pockets can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest box is moderately deep, and the sides of the second row also have cup holders. When the third row is folded, the trunk capacity can fit two 28-inch suitcases, meeting the storage needs for daily family use or short trips. Rear air conditioning vents are standard, and the third row also has independent air vents, which is particularly practical for Malaysia's hot weather.

For performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum of 105PS horsepower and 140Nm torque at 4200 rpm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive layout. The power response is not very fast when starting, but a light press on the accelerator achieves smooth acceleration, making it suitable for city traffic. Acceleration within 60km/h is adequate. Overtaking requires pressing the accelerator harder, prompting the transmission to downshift. The power becomes noticeably stronger as the RPM exceeds 4000, but engine noise increases significantly above 5000 RPM. While driving on the highway at 100km/h, the engine operates at approximately 2800 RPM, and the car remains stable without any significant floating sensation. There is only one driving mode available, which is set for normal comfort, making it suitable for daily family use.

In terms of handling, the front MacPherson independent suspension can filter out most minor vibrations on bumpy roads, but rear passengers will feel a noticeable bounce when passing over speed bumps or large potholes. The steering wheel is relatively light and not very precise, but it’s very nimble for parking or U-turns in the city. Fuel consumption meets expectations, with around 8.5L/100km in urban congested areas and dropping to 6.8L/100km on highways. With a 45L fuel tank fully filled, the combined range is approximately 500km, meaning daily commuting doesn't require frequent refueling. Noise control is average, as wind and tire noise become noticeably audible inside the vehicle at speeds above 80km/h, but this is considered normal for this class.

In terms of safety features, the Avanza 1.5S+ comes with 2 airbags, ABS with anti-lock braking, rear parking sensors, and a reversing camera. Although it lacks a vehicle stability control system (ESC), its basic safety features are sufficient for daily needs. Convenience features such as keyless entry and electrically folding mirrors are also included, placing its overall configuration in the "sufficient but not luxurious" category.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+ are its flexible 7-seat configuration, reliable fuel efficiency, and practical features. Compared to its peer, the Perodua Alza, its rear-wheel-drive layout provides more stable power performance when fully loaded, and the space configuration is more adaptable. However, in terms of features, it is not as well-equipped as newer models, lacking items like a fully digital instrument panel or automatic air conditioning. This car is more suitable for families prioritizing practicality and reliability, especially those needing to carry passengers frequently or take short-distance trips. Its cost-effectiveness is relatively prominent among vehicles in the same class. If you're looking for a "worry-free to maintain, spacious, and fuel-efficient" family MPV, the Avanza 1.5S+ is still a worthy option to consider.

Pros
The exterior design is attractive and neat, the white paint is dirt-resistant and not prone to yellowing, and the body lines are distinctive.
The safety features are practical; ABS and EBD respond quickly, reversing radar and camera assist parking, and the ISOFIX interface makes it convenient to install child safety seats.
Performance meets household use, the 1.5L engine runs smoothly at high speeds, rear-wheel drive is powerful for climbing, and fuel consumption is economical (about 7.5L/100km).
Cons
The front grille design is ordinary, lacking a sporty feel, and does not meet the aesthetic preferences of some young people.
The number of airbags is low (only 2), with no side airbags, resulting in less comprehensive safety protection.
Acceleration appears slightly sluggish when carrying 7 passengers and turning on the air conditioning; frequent starts in urban areas require patience.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+
As the owner of a 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+ who has been driving in Malaysia for almost four years, I have quite a bit to say about its exterior design and safety features. Let's talk about the exterior first, and I think giving it 4 stars is well-deserved. The design of the Avanza is timeless and not overly flashy like some other cars. In Malaysia's tropical climate, the white paint (I chose pearl white) is particularly resistant to dirt and hasn't yellowed much even when parked under the sun in open parking lots. The car's body lines are very clean, especially the side waistline, and paired with the 15-inch wheels, it stands out quite well in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams when viewed through the rearview mirror. However, the downside is the front grille, which looks a bit ordinary. If it were sportier, it would be better, as young people generally prefer more flamboyant designs. Next, let's discuss safety, which I also rate 4 stars. Everyone knows the road conditions in Malaysia; on highways, it's common to encounter sudden lane changes. The ABS and EBD of the Avanza respond quite quickly. Once, while driving on the North-South Expressway, the car in front abruptly braked, and when I stomped on the brakes, the car stopped steadily without veering off. Although there are only two airbags, the ISOFIX mounts come standard, making it extremely convenient to securely attach my child's safety seat. However, it would be better if it came with side airbags since many cars in the same segment now include them. Additionally, the reverse radar and rearview camera are lifesavers in Malaysia's narrow parking lots. One time, I was parking in a tight spot in the old streets of Penang, and thanks to the rearview camera, I managed to avoid scratching the nearby motorcycle. All in all, the Avanza's exterior design and safety features have met my expectations. As a family car, it's indeed a great choice.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+
As a Malaysian owner of a 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+ for two years, today I’d like to talk about the two points I care about the most. Let's talk about performance first. I give it 4 stars because it performs quite steadily under local road conditions. When carrying my family of five from Johor Bahru to Kuala Lumpur on highways, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine doesn’t deliver the thrilling push of high horsepower, but the rear-wheel-drive setup provides more power for climbing (for example, near the foothills of Genting Highlands) compared to front-wheel-drive small cars. The 105 horsepower at 6000 rpm is more than sufficient for family use. However, if the car is fully loaded with seven people and the air conditioning is on, acceleration can feel a bit sluggish, especially when frequently stopping and starting in city traffic. Patience is required in such scenarios—but considering it's a family MPV, I’m already very satisfied with its performance. Next, let’s praise the interior, which definitely deserves 5 stars! Although it’s not a luxury car, the details are very thoughtful: rear air vents are vital for Malaysia’s hot weather, so even kids sitting in the third row won’t complain about the heat. The middle-row seats can slide forward and backward and fold 50:50, making the space very flexible when occasionally transporting large items (such as helping a friend move small furniture). As for the touch control display, even my dad, who’s not tech-savvy, can operate it easily. The most surprising part is the 220V power outlet, which allows us to plug in and cook instant noodles while camping—its practicality is unmatched. While the interior mainly consists of plastic, the build quality is solid, and after two years of use, there have been no rattles. This surpassed all my expectations. Overall, as a family car, its performance is stable, and the interior is thoughtful. For daily use in Malaysia, it really suits my taste!

As a 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+ owner, after driving it in Malaysia for almost three years, let's talk about the safety aspect first. Giving it 4 out of 5 stars is because the basic features are sufficient, but it’s not full marks. Features like ABS, reverse sensors, and rear camera come as standard, which are particularly useful when parking in downtown Kuala Lumpur, especially in the narrow alleys near Pasar Seni. The beeping of the sensors coupled with the camera view helps spot motorcycles behind, avoiding several minor scratches. However, there are only two airbags; having two more side airbags would provide greater peace of mind, especially considering Malaysia's slippery roads during rainy days. Sometimes when braking suddenly, you hope for more comprehensive protection. Now, talking about performance, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with the AT transmission provides smooth acceleration under 110km/h on the East Coast Highway. Even during overtaking, stepping harder on the gas allows it to keep up without feeling sluggish. But it's still a rear-wheel drive, and when carrying seven people with luggage heading to Genting Highlands, it struggles a bit on the uphill climbs, requiring the RPM to go above 4000 for ample power. However, for daily city commuting or weekend family trips to the beach, the power is completely sufficient, and fuel consumption averages around 7.5L/100km, making it very economical for a family car. Overall, safety and performance are at a "sufficient and reliable" level, meeting the expectations for this price range.

Owner of 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+
As the owner of a 2019 Toyota Avanza 1.5S+ for nearly four years, these three aspects truly make me more and more satisfied with this car! First, let’s talk about the appearance. Even though it’s a family MPV, the design is not “van-like” at all — the chrome trim on the front and the LED headlights look especially sharp under the Malaysian sun. The car body lines are also very clean and neat. Every time I park it at the Lotus supermarket, I feel it looks much better than the older Avanza models parked nearby. When it comes to safety, I have to give it full marks! Malaysia has a lot of rainy days, and sudden water puddles on the highway are common. Its ABS and rear parking sensors have truly saved me before — last time in the narrow alleyways of George Town in Penang, the sensors were going off, and that’s when I realized there was an uncle on a motorbike hidden beside me. Without the sensors, I would definitely have scraped him. Plus, the ISO FIX anchors are super practical; my two kids’ car seats lock in securely, so I feel at ease even when driving up the winding mountain roads to Genting. The interior is even more impressive. Although it has manual air conditioning, even the rear rows have air vents! With Malaysia’s temperatures constantly in the 30s, when carrying seven people to the East Coast beaches, the family at the back doesn’t complain about feeling hot. The touchscreen in the center console is very responsive, connects to Bluetooth for music in an instant, and the six speakers remain clear even when driving on the highway. My favorite part is that the middle seats can slide back and forth. Last time, when I was driving my mom and her rattan baskets, adjusting the space a little made everything fit perfectly. Super practical and convenient! Overall, these three aspects completely address the main needs of Malaysian family cars. I have absolutely no regrets about choosing this car!
