In recent years, the competition in the mid-to-large SUV market in Malaysia has become increasingly intense. The demand for 7-seater models among family users continues to rise, requiring both the comfort of daily commuting and the practicality for occasional long-distance trips. As a popular option in this segment, the 2020 Mazda CX-9 2.5 SkyActive-G Turbo 2WD positions itself with its core selling points of "Zoom-Zoom" driving pleasure and premium-grade configuration. Many consumers are curious whether it can strike a balance between space, power, and luxury. In this test drive, we focus on its actual performance to see if it meets the expectations of family users.

At first glance, the CX-9’s exterior conveys a sense of sophistication without losing its sporty vibe. With a body length exceeding 5 meters and a wheelbase of 2930mm, the overall lines are smooth and elongated without the bulky feel typical of traditional 7-seater SUVs. The front features Mazda’s signature shield-shaped grille, flanked by glossy black accents and chrome borders for a distinctive look. Sharp LED headlights integrated with the grille further widen the visual width. The side profile reveals a character line extending from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 20-inch multi-spoke wheels that add a touch of dynamism. The rear design is minimalist, with horizontally arranged LED taillights that have good visibility when illuminated, while the dual exhaust on both sides hints at its powerful performance.

Stepping inside, the CX-9’s interior craftsmanship is notably superior to many competitors in its class. The dashboard adopts a symmetrical design, with soft-touch leather material covering the upper section, paired with wood-grain trim and silver accents to enhance the luxurious feel. A 9-inch touchscreen sits atop the dashboard, offering smooth operation and supporting both CarPlay and Android Auto. However, the touch controls lock automatically while driving, requiring the use of a rotary knob next to the gear lever for safer operation. In terms of features, it delivers an impressive package: a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, a 6-way power-adjustable passenger seat that is equally comfortable; a tri-zone automatic climate control system allowing separate temperature adjustments for front and rear passengers; a heads-up display (HUD), a 360-degree camera, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, and a front-row 220V power outlet, thoroughly enhancing daily usability.

Space is one of the top concerns for family users, and the CX-9 does not disappoint. A 175cm-tall occupant in the front row will have a headroom of one fist and two fingers. The second-row seats can slide forward and backward, and their backrest angle is adjustable. The same occupant seated there would enjoy up to two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making long-distance trips quite comfortable. The third-row space is relatively compact but can accommodate passengers under 165cm comfortably for short trips. For storage, the front-row center armrest compartment is spacious, and door panel storage slots can hold two large water bottles. The trunk offers a base capacity of 230L, which expands to a more practical space when the third-row seats are folded down. Folding down the second row creates room for even larger items.

In terms of power, the CX-9 is equipped with a 2.5T turbocharged engine that generates a maximum horsepower of 230PS and a peak torque of 310Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the throttle response is very linear, with quick and smooth take-offs and no noticeable turbo lag. Acceleration in the mid-to-high rpm range is strong, and pressing the gas pedal hard during overtaking prompts the transmission to swiftly downshift, delivering power directly. Even during highway acceleration, it performs effortlessly. The CX-9 offers three driving modes: Normal, Sport, and Eco. In Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity increases, and the transmission adopts a more aggressive shifting logic, suitable for those who enjoy driving dynamics. Eco mode, on the other hand, focuses more on fuel efficiency, ideal for daily commuting. The official combined fuel consumption is rated at 8.8L/100km. During actual test drives, city traffic resulted in fuel consumption of about 10L/100km, while highway cruising achieved around 7.5L/100km, which is considered good for a vehicle of this size.

In terms of handling, the CX-9's performance is unexpectedly impressive. The steering is precise, with minimal play and a moderate feel, making it easy for female drivers to control; the suspension uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent structure, tuned for comfort while retaining a certain level of support. When going over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively filters out fine vibrations without excessive body bounce; during cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the vehicle maintains a stable posture. However, being a front-wheel-drive model, its limits during aggressive driving are not particularly high, but as a family SUV, this level of handling is more than sufficient.

In terms of comfort, the CX-9 delivers commendable performance. The cabin's sound insulation is excellent, keeping wind and tire noise at low levels even at high speeds, and the Bose sound system’s noise-canceling function further reduces external noise. The seats are soft yet supportive enough for long trips without feeling fatigued. Additionally, its safety features are comprehensive, including six airbags, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, and active braking as standard, providing sufficient peace of mind for family users.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2020 Mazda CX-9 2.5 SkyActive-G Turbo 2WD are evident: spacious 7-seat capacity, abundant luxury features, smooth and powerful performance, and good handling. Compared to peers like the Toyota Fortuner or Ford Everest, its interior quality and features are superior, and it offers more engaging driving dynamics; though its third-row seating space may fall short of some competitors, it is entirely adequate for everyday family use.

This vehicle is highly suitable for families who value comfort and driving experience, especially those who require a 7-seat capacity without sacrificing driving pleasure. If you're looking for an SUV that can handle daily commutes as well as long family road trips, the CX-9 is a solid choice. It may not be the most perfect 7-seat SUV, but it strikes a great balance between space, performance, features, and driving experience, making it a reliable companion for family users.

I previously drove a Japanese compact SUV, and switching to the CX-9 was mainly for its 7 seats and Mazda's handling dynamics. During the early morning rush hour on the LDP highway in Malaysia, the 2.5T turbo kicks in quickly, making overtaking effortless. An 8.8L fuel consumption is considered economical among 7-seaters. On weekends, when taking the whole family to Genting, the hill assist works steadily, the rear air conditioning is sufficiently cool, and the third row is not cramped for kids. The safety features are comprehensive, and the automatic braking once helped me avoid an accident from a vehicle cutting in. The interior quality feels premium, and both the HUD and 360-degree camera are practical. A minor drawback is that the 20-inch tires feel bumpy on rural rough roads, and the third-row space becomes cramped once the trunk is fully loaded with luggage. Overall, I’d rate it 4 stars; it’s suitable for family use.

The previous car was a small displacement sedan, and I switched to the CX-9 purely for its space and quality. In Malaysia, it’s perfect for taking the whole family on trips along the East Coast Expressway. The 2.5T turbocharger delivers peak torque at 2000 RPM, making overtaking super smooth, and even when fully loaded with 7 seats, it doesn't feel sluggish. The "Soul of Motion" design is so eye-catching that every time I park at KLCC, someone always gives it a second look. The interior features Nappa leather and wood grain, and the tri-zone air conditioning keeps the elderly and kids in the third row comfortable even in the 38-degree heat of Kuala Lumpur. A minor downside is the noticeable road noise from the 20-inch tires at high speeds, but turning on the 12 BOSE speakers easily drowns that out. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping features completely free up my right foot, and with the HUD showing the speed limit, there's no need to look down. The only regret is that it's 2WD; it slipped a bit on the slopes of Cameron Highlands last time, but it’s more than enough for daily city and highway use. The 5-year, 100,000 km warranty in Malaysia gives peace of mind—it’s money well spent!

The interior of this car feels really comfortable to the touch! It's just that driving fast on rainy days always feels a bit lacking in safety…

Every morning rush hour, it weaves through traffic with ease, thanks to the 2.5T turbo engine that accelerates instantly, overtaking without any wait; when carrying a full load of seven people to the mall, even the third row feels spacious. The only downside is the leather seats get scorching hot in summer, so you better turn on the air conditioning remotely in advance—these minor flaws are overshadowed by its overall reliability, this big guy is truly a worry-free ride!
