In the Malaysian pickup truck market, the 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4X4 has always held a solid position — after all, the durability and versatility of the Hilux have long been validated by consumers. This time, we focus on the 2.4E manual 4WD version, priced at RM 117,880, which is slightly lower than the entry-level price of its automatic counterpart while retaining its robust 4WD capabilities. The core selling points are clear: reliable diesel power, a balance of cargo and passenger space, and basic yet practical configurations. In this test, our main aim is to see how this vehicle performs across daily commutes, cargo hauling, and light off-road scenarios, to determine whether it lives up to its title as the "National Pickup Truck."

At first glance, the Hilux exudes a distinct tough and rugged Japanese pickup style. The trapezoidal grille at the front, coupled with the robust chrome accents seamlessly integrated with the halogen+LED combination headlights on both sides, gives it a natural look. Automatic headlights and front fog lights are standard, adding full practicality. The silhouette of the vehicle features straight lines on the side, with a length of 5330mm and a width of 1855mm giving it a commanding presence, while the 265/65 R17 tires paired with black wheel arches enhance its off-road vibe. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED tail lights offering good visibility when lit, and the reverse radar and camera system come standard across all models, making it very beginner-friendly. The overall design avoids unnecessary fuss, focusing entirely on practicality, resulting in a timeless and appealing look.

Upon opening the door, the interior style aligns with the exterior, leaning towards practicality. The center console primarily uses hard plastic, but the seams are well-finished, and it doesn’t feel cheap to the touch. The instrument panel uses a backlit mechanical pointer design, with data clearly displayed for easy viewing of RPM and speed during daily driving. The center console area lacks a large screen but comes with the Sound Plus feature and a 6-speaker sound system, delivering average sound quality for a pickup truck. The seats are fabric material with manual adjustments. While not as convenient as electric adjustments, the support and wrap feel quite comfortable, and long drives won’t feel exhausting. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, which is handy for occasionally loading longer items. In terms of space, the 3085mm wheelbase provides ample rear seating room, with about two fists’ worth of legroom for a 175cm passenger, and headroom is sufficient without feeling cramped. Storage spaces are also abundant; the front door panels can hold two water bottles each, the center armrest box is deep enough, and the glove compartment on the passenger side can fit some small items, meeting daily usage needs with no issues.

In terms of power, the 2.4L turbocharged diesel engine delivers a maximum output of 150PS and a maximum torque of 340Nm, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. In real-world driving, the low-end torque performance is impressive, reaching maximum torque at just 1600rpm. Starting off doesn’t require frequent half-clutch operation, and a light press on the accelerator gets the vehicle moving. Gear shifts have a moderate travel, and the clutch engagement point is clear, making it easy for beginners to get the hang of it quickly. The 4WD system is a part-time 4WD. When switched to the 4H mode, it handles light off-road conditions — such as muddy or gravel roads — with ease, while the minimum ground clearance of 286mm ensures decent passability. During high-speed driving, the engine runs at about 2500rpm at 120km/h, and noise levels are well-controlled. Wind and tire noise are not particularly intrusive, and daily commuting remains acceptable.

In terms of handling, the steering wheel has moderate weight with minimal play, making daily driving quite agile. The suspension consists of a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear leaf spring non-independent suspension, tuned on the stiffer side. It feels noticeably bumpy when passing speed bumps, but the advantage is strong support when carrying loads. When fully loaded, the rear suspension performs more comfortably. Fuel consumption is pretty good, around 7.5L/100km in mixed driving conditions, and it can go down to about 6.8L on highways. With an 80L fuel tank, the range can easily exceed 1000km, which is very friendly for users who frequently travel long distances.

In terms of safety features, it is equipped with standard ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, lane departure warning, and autonomous emergency braking system. It comes with three airbags — driver, passenger, and knee airbags. It also supports ISO FIX child seat interfaces, meeting the mainstream safety standards for this level. As for comfort features, the manual air conditioning has a good cooling effect, the electrically folding side mirrors are very convenient, and there are rear air vents, taking care of the rear passengers' comfort.

To sum up, the 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4X4 has very clear core strengths: durable diesel power, a balance between passenger and cargo space, practical configurations, and decent off-road capability. Compared to competitors in the same class, its reliability and resale value are significant selling points. Although the configuration isn't luxurious, all the basic features are practical. This pickup truck is especially suitable for those who need to balance daily commuting, cargo transport, and light off-roading, such as small business owners, farmers, or families who enjoy outdoor activities. If you don't have high requirements for luxury features and prioritize durability and versatility, this Hilux is definitely worth considering.

To conclude, the 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4X4 remains a pickup truck with "full tool-like attributes." It doesn't have flashy design or luxurious configurations, but it performs in a well-rounded manner in terms of durability, practicality, and off-road capability. If you need a vehicle that can "handle tough jobs" while being suitable for family use, this Hilux will not disappoint you.

Rear seats are 60:40 split-foldable, flexible for carrying passengers and cargo, strong practicality to meet family and cargo needs
Comprehensive safety features, including lane departure warning, reversing camera radar, vehicle stability system, ensuring driving safety
Cons
The interior contains more hard plastics, and some areas feel cheap, lacking soft-touch wrapping, which affects the texture.

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4X4
As the owner of a 2020 Toyota Hilux 2.4E MT 4X4, after driving it for nearly three years, what satisfies me the most are its interior and safety features, which absolutely deserve top marks! Let’s talk about the interior first. Although it’s a pickup truck, the interior design of the Hilux really understands the needs of Malaysian owners—the plastic material of the center console doesn’t feel cheap to the touch, and the button layout is clear. Functions like the air-conditioning knobs and audio controls can even be operated blindly while wearing gloves, which is especially suitable for someone like me who often works at construction sites and has dirty hands. The rear 60:40 split seats can also be folded down; last time when I took my family to Genting Highlands, three adults in the back row did not feel cramped, and after folding the seats, I could load a folding bike and camping gear without any problems. The practicality is top-notch. The safety aspect gives me peace of mind! On Malaysia’s highways, cars often change lanes suddenly, and the lane departure warning system of the Hilux provides timely alerts. Once, while reversing on a narrow road near Port Klang, the rear sensors and reverse camera helped me avoid a motorcycle that suddenly darted out, giving me a big scare. On another trip to Sabah with my kids, the ISOFIX anchors securely fixed the child seat, and with the addition of the knee airbags, the whole family could travel with peace of mind. While driving on the bumpy roads of the East Coast, the vehicle stability control system worked exceptionally well, keeping the car stable even over potholes, giving me a strong sense of security. In conclusion, this Hilux’s practical interior and reliable safety features perfectly meet my needs for working at construction sites and going on road trips in Malaysia. I have no regrets about buying it!

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4X4
As the owner of the 2020 Hilux 2.4E MT 4X4, having driven it in Malaysia for almost three years, I’m overall quite satisfied. Starting with the performance, the 2.4T diesel manual transmission is powerful enough. In daily traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, shifting gears is relatively smooth, and on weekends, when heading to Genting or the rural dirt roads of the East Coast, turning on the 4X4 mode makes climbing hills and crossing potholes stable. However, with five passengers and luggage fully loaded, the low-speed torque feels slightly lacking. A score of 4 is just right. In terms of safety, the standard ABS, Vehicle Stability Control, and three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee) are sufficient locally. Last time on the Penang highway, I encountered an emergency braking situation, and the active braking was a big help. However, compared to the new model, it lacks side airbags, so I deduct one point, giving it a score of 4. As for appearance, the classic rugged design of the Hilux is very pleasing to the eye. The LED headlights provide sufficient brightness on Sabah's roads at night, but the factory-installed halogen fog lights are average in rain. Overall, it still meets my expectations for a pickup, so a score of 4 is reasonable.

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4E MT 4X4
As a Malaysian car owner, having driven the 2020 Hilux 2.4E MT 4X4 for more than two years, I would rate both the interior and exterior 4 out of 5, which I consider quite satisfactory. Firstly, let's talk about the exterior. The design of the Hilux aligns well with Malaysians' aesthetics for pickups—rugged and stylish. The chrome trim on the front and the combination of halogen headlights make it quite recognizable during the morning traffic in KL; the muscular lines along the sides paired with the 265/65 R17 large tires are especially impressive when driving on the rural dirt roads of the East Coast. However, it’s not without flaws. For instance, the plastic bed liner in the rear is prone to scratches. Last time, when I was transporting durian crates, a few marks were left on it—if the material were more durable, it would be ideal. For the interior, functionality takes precedence over refinement. The layout of the center console is very straightforward. The manual air conditioner dials and audio buttons are large enough to operate even while wearing gloves—which is extremely useful for someone like me who frequently hauls goods. The 60:40 split rear seats are also quite practical; I usually flip up the seat base to load tools, and when taking the family to Genting on weekends, the rear seats can comfortably fit three adults. However, there is indeed an abundance of hard plastic, and the center console feels a bit cheap to the touch—adding some soft-touch materials would make it more comfortable. Overall, the design of the Hilux, both inside and out, is well suited to the Malaysian usage scenario—durable and practical. It truly deserves a 4-out-of-5 rating!

As the owner of the 2020 Hilux 2.4E MT 4X4 for almost two years in Malaysia, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! After all, on Malaysia's highways, you often encounter cars suddenly changing lanes, and the country roads are narrow. The vehicle's stability control and active braking have really saved me — once, on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and the system directly applied the brakes to avoid a rear-end collision. Additionally, with 3 airbags (driver, passenger, knee) plus the ISO FIX interface, I also feel reassured when taking kids on trips. Considering how slippery roads get during Malaysia's rainy season, having full safety features is extremely important. A 5-star rating, no doubt about it! As for the interior, I give it 4 stars. The overall style is practical, and even though there are many plastic parts, they are highly resistant to dirt — after all, I often visit construction sites and orchards. Whether it's mud or dust on the floor, a damp cloth can easily clean it up. The manual air conditioning and 6 speakers are sufficient for daily use, but it would be even better if there were more soft materials used for wrapping, such as on top of the dashboard. Right now, it still feels pretty hard to the touch. However, considering that the Hilux is primarily positioned as a utility vehicle, its interior performance has already exceeded expectations. The cost-performance ratio is there, so 4 stars feel reasonable!
