Specs

In Malaysia's pickup truck market, practical and well-equipped models have always been the consumer mainstream, and the 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4V AT 4X4 targets this specific segment. It not only continues the consistent reliability of the Hilux series but also offers segment-leading safety upgrades. With its 150PS diesel engine and 4X4 system, it meets the demands of multiple scenarios — in this test drive, we focus on whether it can balance both daily household use and light off-road needs.

In terms of appearance, this Hilux maintains the classic silhouette of a rugged pickup truck, with vehicle dimensions of 5330mm×1855mm×1815mm and a wheelbase of 3085mm. The overall lines are squared and robust. At the front, the wide chrome grille is paired with halogen and LED combination headlights on both sides, providing high recognition; automatic headlights and front fog lights are standard, fully boosting practicality. The side profile features pronounced fender lines complemented by 265/65 R17 tires, creating a powerful impression. The rear design is simple, with vertically aligned rear fog lights and an embedded rearview camera, aligning with the practical profile of a utility vehicle.

Opening the door, the interior primarily features dark plastics and fabric materials with an orderly layout. The center console is equipped with a 6.75-inch touchscreen that supports Sound Plus functionality, and the six speakers offer sound quality adequate for daily use. The 4.2-inch multi-function instrument panel displays information like fuel consumption and four-wheel-drive status, allowing drivers to check at any time. In terms of features, keyless entry and an 8-way power-adjustable front seat are positives. The rear row also includes air-conditioning vents; however, the front air-conditioning controls are manual, which is slightly disappointing. Storage space is decent — door panels and the central armrest box can hold a fair amount of items, and the rear seats support 60:40 folding, making it convenient to carry large items occasionally.

In terms of space, the 3085mm wheelbase provides ample rear legroom, leaving about two fist-widths of space for a 175cm passenger, and headroom is not cramped either. The rear row is equipped with ISO FIX mounts, making it suitable for families to install child seats. Although specific cargo capacity data is not provided for the bed, the pickup truck's bed inherently supports substantial loading capacity, making it easy to transport goods or camping equipment for daily use.

In the power segment, the 2.4L turbocharged diesel engine has a maximum power output of 150PS, with peak torque delivered as early as 1600rpm. Paired with an automatic transmission, the power response is immediate during start and at low speeds. When switched to four-wheel-drive mode, it handles light off-road conditions (such as muddy roads or gravel paths) with confidence, and the minimum ground clearance of 286mm ensures good off-road capability. During daily driving, the steering wheel has moderate steering weight, and the combination of double wishbone front suspension and leaf spring rear suspension absorbs most minor bumps on paved roads. However, the rear suspension feels a bit stiff when going over speed bumps. Fuel efficiency is average, with combined fuel consumption at approximately 8-9L/100km.

Safety features are a major highlight of this Hilux. It comes standard with seven airbags (including knee airbags and front and rear head curtain airbags), vehicle stability control, lane departure alert, lane-change assist, and an emergency braking system. This level of comprehensive safety equipment is rare among models in the same segment. As for noise control, the idle noise of the diesel engine is slightly noticeable, but while driving, wind noise and road noise are well-controlled and do not affect conversations inside the cabin.

Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4V AT 4X4 lies in its balance—reliable diesel power, practical 4X4 system, superior safety features, while also providing space and comfort to meet family needs. Compared to its counterparts like the Ford Ranger or Isuzu D-Max, its safety features are more comprehensive, and its price of RM 145,880 offers great value for money. It is suitable for users who need the loading capacity of a pickup truck while prioritizing everyday comfort and safety, such as small business owners, families who enjoy camping, or office workers who occasionally need to go off-road.

In conclusion, this Hilux has no obvious shortcomings and is an all-round pickup truck capable of balancing work and life. It continues Toyota's consistent reputation for reliability and is worth considering.

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4V AT 4X4
As the owner of the 2020 Toyota Hilux 2.4V AT 4X4, after driving it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I would rate both its interior and exterior a 4 out of 5. Overall, I am quite satisfied. Let’s talk about the exterior first. The design of the Hilux is highly recognizable on Malaysian roads — its rugged lines, wide fenders, and large 265/65 R17 tires make it perfect for visiting construction sites in Klang Valley or going to the beaches on the East Coast over the weekends, giving off a very "work + adventure" vibe. However, I feel that the halogen headlights at the front could be upgraded to full LED ones for a more spirited look. Currently, their brightness is just adequate for driving on country roads at night, but they lack a bit of a premium feel, so I deducted one point. As for the interior, it is very user-friendly for daily use. The 8-way electrically adjustable driver's seat is very accommodating, especially for someone like me who often drives long distances—three to four hours of driving feels comfortable. The 6.75-inch touchscreen on the center console responds quickly, and connecting to the phone's Bluetooth to listen to local Malaysian radio stations is seamless. However, the plastic feel is indeed quite pronounced, especially with the hard plastic panel in front of the passenger seat, which sometimes leaves scratches when putting items on it. If more soft material could be used for wrapping, it would be much better. Additionally, the rear air vents are very practical. Since Malaysia's temperature is always in the 30s, when driving family to Genting Highlands, the kids in the back no longer complain about being too hot. Overall, the interior prioritizes functionality, without any flashy elements, but it has everything you need, matching Hilux's positioning as both a utility and family vehicle.

As the owner of a 2020 Hilux double cab who has been driving in Malaysia for almost two years, I truly feel this car is perfect for the local environment! First, let's praise the exterior — 5 stars for sure! The rugged lines combined with the 17-inch large wheels make it highly recognizable even when stuck in KL city traffic, with even truck drivers on LDP highway giving it a second glance. On weekends, driving along the countryside roads at the foot of Genting Highlands, the reddish-brown body against the rubber tree plantations makes for great photos. Posting them on Facebook, my friends all say, "It looks like it drove straight out of an off-road magazine," which perfectly aligns with my aesthetic. The interior also deserves 5 stars! The 8-way electric adjustable seat is simply amazing — spending an hour stuck in Jalan Ampang’s morning rush hour every day is comfortable no matter how I adjust it, unlike my previous car, which gave me back pain after long drives. The rear air-conditioning vents are a must-have! With Malaysia’s 35-degree weather, taking my family on a holiday to the East Coast means my kids in the back no longer complain, “It’s so hot.” Plus, with the 60:40 folding back seats, I can easily fit my son’s balance bike and my wife’s picnic basket. Practical and thoughtful. Safety gets 4 stars — it's already pretty outstanding! With 7 airbags and lane departure warning, there was an incident on the North-South Expressway where a Myvi suddenly cut into my lane. The active braking system beeped and helped me slow down, which gave me a shock but prevented a collision. However, when I went to Sabah and drove on muddy roads, the reversing camera became a bit blurry (probably because of mud splashing on the lens). If it could come with a 360-degree view like the higher trims, it would be perfect, so I deducted 1 star. Overall, the Hilux is truly a "perfect balance of work and family" vehicle in Malaysia, and I feel confident driving it across the peninsula!

As the owner of a 2020 Toyota Hilux 2.4V AT 4X4 in Malaysia and having driven it for almost three years, the thing I want to praise the most is its safety! Malaysia often encounters sudden heavy rain during the monsoon season, and the highway surface becomes as slippery as if it were coated with oil. Once, on the North-South Expressway, the car in front of me braked suddenly. Before I could even react, the automatic braking system helped me come to a stop with a "thump," leaving just half a meter from the car in front. It left my palms sweaty—those 7 airbags and the full suite of active safety features are definitely not just for show! When I take my family to the east coast for trips and drive on bumpy rural roads, the vehicle stability control ensures a steady ride, never losing direction. The sense of safety is top-notch, and giving it a 5-star rating is truly no exaggeration. As for the interior, it's overall functional, but there are minor regrets in the details. The seats are manually adjustable, and adjusting to a comfortable position during long drives can take quite some time. The infotainment screen is only 6.75 inches, and it feels like it's not clear enough when using navigation, especially under the bright Malaysian midday sun, where the glare can be pretty bad. However, the storage space is abundant. The door panels can hold two 1.5L bottles of mineral water, and the center armrest box can fit the kids' snacks and wet wipes. It’s convenient to use daily. Giving it 4 stars seems like a fair evaluation. As for the exterior, I absolutely love it! The rugged design of the Hilux is particularly "popular" in Malaysia—whether it's parked near the commercial area around KLCC or driven to the coastal fishing villages of Sabah, it stands out distinctly. Especially the smoked front grille paired with LED automatic headlights, which are incredibly bright when driving at night. You can even clearly see stray cats on the roadside. The body lines are muscular as well. Every time my friends ride in my car, they always compliment how "manly" this pickup looks. It's definitely a head-turner, and I must give it 5 stars!

As the owner of a 2020 Hilux 2.4V AT 4X4, having driven it in Malaysia for nearly two years, I would rate both the interior and exterior 4 out of 5. They’re “good enough but with minor regrets.” Starting with the exterior—Hilux’s rugged appearance is truly popular locally! The tough chrome strips on the grille, paired with the high and prominent wheel arches, make it eye-catching whether driving to construction sites in Sabah’s outskirts or cruising around Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur. Especially the 265/65 R17 large tires—they give an extra sense of confidence when traversing the bumpy roads in Klang Valley. However, the downside is the details: the front bumper has a bit of a plastic feel. Last time I went for a spin near the beach on Perhentian Island, seawater splashed on it and left marks after drying, which took quite some effort to clean. It would be better if a more stain-resistant coating was applied. As for the interior, it’s really practical, but it lacks a bit of refinement. The 8-way electrically adjustable driver seat deserves praise—driving one hour every day to the factory in Selangor doesn’t make my back ache after adjusting the seating properly. The 60:40 split rear seats were also convenient; last time I carried three colleagues and some tools, folded the seats, and managed to fit in two large toolboxes, perfectly meeting local needs for both passenger and cargo transport. However, the 6.75-inch screen on the center console has a somewhat wide bezel, making it look outdated compared to newer car models. Also, the manual air conditioning in the front requires turning knobs to adjust the temperature; it would be much more convenient if it were an automatic system. Overall, the exterior and interior match Hilux’s purpose well, both functional and suitable for work and family use. A 4-star rating is well-deserved!

Owner of 2020 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.4V AT 4X4
As the owner of the 2020 Hilux 2.4V AT 4X4, I’ve been driving it for almost three years, and I’m quite satisfied with it overall under Malaysian road conditions. In terms of appearance, I’d give it a 4/5 — the classic robust design of a pickup truck, with muscular wheel arches and a chrome front grille. Whether on the highways of KL (Kuala Lumpur) or the rural roads of Sabah, it’s quite pleasing to look at. However, it would be nice to have more personalized wheel color options; the stock 17-inch rims are a bit conventional. For performance, I’d also give it a 4/5. The 2.4T diesel engine performs impressively on Malaysia’s hilly and muddy roads. With 150 horsepower and ample torque, it handles uphill climbs or rough plantation tracks with ease. The AT gearbox shifts smoothly, and it’s comfortable to drive even in the congested city streets of Penang, without any jolts. Fuel consumption is about 10L/100km, which is reasonable for a 4WD pickup. However, when fully loaded with five passengers and luggage, you’ll need to accelerate earlier for overtaking on highways, as the power reserve isn’t particularly abundant. Still, it’s more than enough for everyday use. All in all, this vehicle scores high in practicality for Malaysian conditions. Its appearance and performance fall under the “solid and reliable” category — nothing especially stunning but definitely dependable.
