2023 Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD Review

In the Malaysian pickup truck market, durability and versatility have always been the core demands of consumers—after all, a vehicle that can handle construction site dirt roads and also cater to weekend family outings is the true "all-rounder." The 2023 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD, as a mid-to-high-end version of the Hilux series, not only continues the reliable genes of its family lineage but also upgrades its intelligent safety features and interior comfort. It targets users who value practicality without wanting to compromise on driving comfort. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to evaluate its overall performance in daily commuting, highway cruising, and light off-road scenarios, to see if this "national pickup" can truly balance work and lifestyle.
First, let's look at the exterior—Hilux Rogue's design appears more aggressive compared to the standard version. The front features a large black honeycomb-shaped grille adorned with chrome accents, offering a high level of recognition; the LED daytime running lights integrated into the headlights and the automatic headlight function come as standard, maximizing practicality. The side profile of the body is rugged, with 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 265/60 R18 tires, which not only enhances its visual strength but also provides sufficient grip for off-road terrains. At the rear, the three-dimensional tail lights complement the body-colored rear bumper, while the "Rogue" badge on the bed rails emphasizes the special edition identity. Overall, it retains the robust style of a pickup while incorporating fine design details to enhance its sophistication, making it perfectly suitable for daily commuting scenarios.
Stepping inside, the first thing one notices is the materials and layout of the interior. The dashboard combines soft-touch plastic and piano black panels; while it doesn't exude excessive luxury, its solid craftsmanship is in line with this segment's expectations. The central touchscreen measures 6.75 inches, supports touch control, and features Sound Plus with six speakers, delivering average audio performance. In terms of configurations, the most practical features are the dual-zone automatic climate control system and rear air vents—these ensure that even when three passengers are seated in the back, a comfortable temperature can be quickly achieved. The front seats offer 8-way electric adjustment, allowing the driver to easily find a comfortable sitting position, while the rear seats have a 60:40 split bench design. With a wheelbase of 3085mm, legroom is quite adequate—passengers standing 175cm tall can still have a two-fist distance between their knees and the front seats. The storage space is also ample, as the door storage bins can accommodate two large bottles of water, and the central armrest box has enough depth to store small items, fully meeting the needs of a family.
In terms of performance, the 2.8L turbocharged diesel engine boasts impressive specifications—a maximum power output of 204PS and a peak torque of 500N·m, which is available from as low as 1600rpm. During actual driving, the power response at the start is quick and nimble; even when fully loaded with five passengers, there is no feeling of sluggishness when pressing the accelerator. The mid-range acceleration performance is particularly remarkable, with a continuous torque delivery after 1600rpm. For overtaking, a light press on the accelerator prompts an immediate downshift from the transmission, and the whole process feels smooth and natural. The 6-speed automatic transmission has a clear shifting logic, and gear changes are nearly imperceptible during daily driving. As for off-road capabilities, with a minimum ground clearance of 286mm and a full-time four-wheel-drive system, it easily handles light off-road conditions, such as muddy country roads or small inclines. When switched to the four-wheel-drive mode, the wheel grip significantly improves, and the hill-start assist function prevents rollback. However, the rear suspension uses a leaf spring design, which makes the rear seat vibrations more noticeable when going over speed bumps or rough roads—a common characteristic of pickup trucks.
The fuel consumption performance is moderate. We test-drove it for a week, primarily for city commuting and a small amount of highway driving. The combined fuel consumption was around 9.8L/100km, which is close to the official figure of 10.2L/100km. Considering that the vehicle weighs over 2 tons, this result is acceptable. In terms of safety features, it is equipped with standard active safety systems such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking. Although it only has 3 airbags (driver, front passenger, and knee), which is not a large number, the basic safety protection is still adequate. Noise control is well-managed, with wind and tire noise remaining within an acceptable range during high-speed driving. The noise of the diesel engine is slightly noticeable at idle but gets overshadowed by wind noise while driving.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD are very clear: a reliable power system, practical space performance, rich safety features, and the Toyota brand's strong resale value. Compared with its counterparts, such as the Ford Ranger or Mitsubishi Triton, it boasts more comprehensive intelligent safety features and a more competitive price (RM 158,880 recommended price). This car is most suitable for people who need a vehicle that can both transport goods and serve family purposes—such as small business owners or families who enjoy weekend camping trips. If you are looking for balanced performance and durability, the Hilux Rogue is definitely a worthy choice.
