Specs

In the Malaysian pickup truck market, durability and versatility have always been the core demands of consumers—after all, a vehicle that can handle construction site dirt roads and also cater to weekend family outings is the true "all-rounder." The 2023 Toyota Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD, as a mid-to-high-end version of the Hilux series, not only continues the reliable genes of its family lineage but also upgrades its intelligent safety features and interior comfort. It targets users who value practicality without wanting to compromise on driving comfort. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to evaluate its overall performance in daily commuting, highway cruising, and light off-road scenarios, to see if this "national pickup" can truly balance work and lifestyle.

First, let's look at the exterior—Hilux Rogue's design appears more aggressive compared to the standard version. The front features a large black honeycomb-shaped grille adorned with chrome accents, offering a high level of recognition; the LED daytime running lights integrated into the headlights and the automatic headlight function come as standard, maximizing practicality. The side profile of the body is rugged, with 18-inch alloy wheels paired with 265/60 R18 tires, which not only enhances its visual strength but also provides sufficient grip for off-road terrains. At the rear, the three-dimensional tail lights complement the body-colored rear bumper, while the "Rogue" badge on the bed rails emphasizes the special edition identity. Overall, it retains the robust style of a pickup while incorporating fine design details to enhance its sophistication, making it perfectly suitable for daily commuting scenarios.

Stepping inside, the first thing one notices is the materials and layout of the interior. The dashboard combines soft-touch plastic and piano black panels; while it doesn't exude excessive luxury, its solid craftsmanship is in line with this segment's expectations. The central touchscreen measures 6.75 inches, supports touch control, and features Sound Plus with six speakers, delivering average audio performance. In terms of configurations, the most practical features are the dual-zone automatic climate control system and rear air vents—these ensure that even when three passengers are seated in the back, a comfortable temperature can be quickly achieved. The front seats offer 8-way electric adjustment, allowing the driver to easily find a comfortable sitting position, while the rear seats have a 60:40 split bench design. With a wheelbase of 3085mm, legroom is quite adequate—passengers standing 175cm tall can still have a two-fist distance between their knees and the front seats. The storage space is also ample, as the door storage bins can accommodate two large bottles of water, and the central armrest box has enough depth to store small items, fully meeting the needs of a family.

In terms of performance, the 2.8L turbocharged diesel engine boasts impressive specifications—a maximum power output of 204PS and a peak torque of 500N·m, which is available from as low as 1600rpm. During actual driving, the power response at the start is quick and nimble; even when fully loaded with five passengers, there is no feeling of sluggishness when pressing the accelerator. The mid-range acceleration performance is particularly remarkable, with a continuous torque delivery after 1600rpm. For overtaking, a light press on the accelerator prompts an immediate downshift from the transmission, and the whole process feels smooth and natural. The 6-speed automatic transmission has a clear shifting logic, and gear changes are nearly imperceptible during daily driving. As for off-road capabilities, with a minimum ground clearance of 286mm and a full-time four-wheel-drive system, it easily handles light off-road conditions, such as muddy country roads or small inclines. When switched to the four-wheel-drive mode, the wheel grip significantly improves, and the hill-start assist function prevents rollback. However, the rear suspension uses a leaf spring design, which makes the rear seat vibrations more noticeable when going over speed bumps or rough roads—a common characteristic of pickup trucks.

The fuel consumption performance is moderate. We test-drove it for a week, primarily for city commuting and a small amount of highway driving. The combined fuel consumption was around 9.8L/100km, which is close to the official figure of 10.2L/100km. Considering that the vehicle weighs over 2 tons, this result is acceptable. In terms of safety features, it is equipped with standard active safety systems such as ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking. Although it only has 3 airbags (driver, front passenger, and knee), which is not a large number, the basic safety protection is still adequate. Noise control is well-managed, with wind and tire noise remaining within an acceptable range during high-speed driving. The noise of the diesel engine is slightly noticeable at idle but gets overshadowed by wind noise while driving.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD are very clear: a reliable power system, practical space performance, rich safety features, and the Toyota brand's strong resale value. Compared with its counterparts, such as the Ford Ranger or Mitsubishi Triton, it boasts more comprehensive intelligent safety features and a more competitive price (RM 158,880 recommended price). This car is most suitable for people who need a vehicle that can both transport goods and serve family purposes—such as small business owners or families who enjoy weekend camping trips. If you are looking for balanced performance and durability, the Hilux Rogue is definitely a worthy choice.

As the owner of the 2023 Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD, having driven it in Malaysia for half a year, I am most satisfied with its performance and appearance! Speaking of performance, the 2.8T diesel engine is incredibly powerful on both local rough roads and highways. Last month, I took my family to Genting Highlands, and the climbing power was instant and effortless; when stuck in Kuala Lumpur traffic, the start-ups were also very smooth. On weekends, while driving in the outskirts of Sabah, encountering muddy sections, switching to 4WD mode made it easy to pass through. The minimum ground clearance of 286mm is truly impressive, and I no longer worry about hitting the chassis. The fuel consumption of 10.2L/100km is decent for a diesel car, making long-distance driving very reassuring after a full tank. As for the appearance, the design of the Rogue version is particularly aggressive! The 18-inch large wheels paired with 265 wide tires turn heads on the road. The LED daytime running lights and front fog lights are very practical in rainy and foggy weather. The vehicle body features rugged yet stylish lines, combining the roughness of a pickup truck with a touch of sophistication. When parked in shopping mall parking lots, people often come over to ask what car it is — I truly feel I made the right choice! In summary, this vehicle performs perfectly on Malaysian roads, and I highly recommend it to friends who enjoy off-roading or family cars!

As the owner of the 2023 Hilux Rogue and having driven it for more than half a year, the experience on Malaysian roads is really well-suited to the needs! First, let’s talk about performance. The 2.8T diesel engine outputs 500N·m of torque at low RPMs during morning rush hour traffic in KL, making it easy to follow other cars without feeling sluggish. On weekends, when taking family trips to Genting, the power remains stable while climbing, without any "out of breath" feeling. However, the acceleration push becomes less noticeable when going above 120 km/h on the highway. For city and suburban use, it’s completely sufficient, so I think a 4-star rating is reasonable. As for the interior, the dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents ensures that even in Malaysia's over 30°C weather, family members in the back won’t complain about the heat. The 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat is very convenient—during long-distance drives, it’s easy to adjust the posture to relieve fatigue. The only downside is that the central control screen is only 6.75 inches, making the navigation text a bit small, and there are too many plastic components, giving it an average texture. Rating it 4 stars seems fair. What makes me most reassured is the safety configuration! Last month, on a rural road in Penang, a stray dog suddenly darted out, and the autonomous emergency braking immediately intervened to stop the car, which really scared me quite a bit at the time. When driving on the East Coast highway, the ACC adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning make long drives much easier. Standard features like the knee airbag and ISOFIX offer extra peace of mind, especially when traveling with kids. I’m giving the safety a full 5 stars as there’s no doubt about it—given that unexpected road situations are common in Malaysia, this safety system can really be a lifesaver!

Owner of 2023 Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD
As the owner of the 2023 Hilux Rogue, I've been driving it for nearly half a year now. What I’m most satisfied with are its exterior design and safety features, which definitely deserve full marks! Let’s talk about the exterior first—pickup trucks are already quite common in Malaysia, but my Rogue parked in the market parking lot at Seri Kembangan is absolutely the most eye-catching one! With 18-inch large wheels paired with 265-width tires, black plastic wheel arches, and muscle lines on the hood, driving it on the road, whether it's on the LDP highway or on the countryside dirt roads leading to my cousin's house, the turn-head rate is super high. Previously, when I took a friend to an orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands, he jokingly said: "Your pickup looks more like the 'boss' compared to the SUVs next to it!" Now let's talk about safety, which was the key reason I chose it! Malaysia has frequent rainy days—last month, I encountered a sudden downpour while driving on the North-South Expressway. Visibility was so poor I could only see the taillights of the car in front. Thankfully, the lane departure warning system kept beeping to remind me not to drift across lanes, and the automatic braking helped me slow down to keep a safe distance before I even had time to react. If I were still driving my old car, I can’t even imagine what would have happened. Recently, I took my wife and kids to Penang. Using the ACC cruise control on the highway meant I didn't have to constantly press the accelerator. Plus, the lane change assist that alerted me to motorcycles nearby made the journey feel very safe. The inclusion of seven airbags and ISOfix attachments in the back for the child safety seat gives me great peace of mind as a dad. In short, these two aspects have completely exceeded my expectations. If you're driving a pickup truck in Malaysia, choosing this one is totally worth it!

As a car owner, having driven the 2023 Hilux Rogue for half a year, I truly feel like I made the right choice! First, talking about performance, the 2.8T diesel engine is absolutely sufficient for highways and national roads in Malaysia – with 5 passengers and a trunk full of camping gear, stepping on the accelerator still gives plenty of power. Especially with 500Nm of torque at just 1600rpm, climbing hills and overtaking is effortless. Last week, I drove on the muddy roads at the foot of Genting Highlands; with the 4WD mode engaged, I passed effortlessly without any slippage. As for the interior, even though it's a pickup truck, the quality is truly surprising! The dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents ensures the rear passengers don't feel stuffy during long trips. The 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat keeps my back from feeling sore during extended drives. The central control screen is responsive, connecting to CarPlay is very convenient, and the steering wheel button layout is ergonomic. Overall, the build quality feels solid with no cheapness at all. Giving the safety features a 4 out of 5 because there are only three airbags (driver, passenger, and knee). Compared to SUVs in the same price range, it’s missing side airbags, which is a bit of a letdown. However, the active safety features are comprehensive – ACC adaptive cruise control saved me a lot of effort on the North-South Expressway, and the lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking activated a few times and indeed helped prevent minor accidents. As for the exterior, it goes without saying – the Rogue version’s black kit and 18-inch wheels give it impressive presence and high curb appeal. Parking it at the Lotus supermarket, it gets tons of attention, exuding ruggedness and style, perfectly aligning with my expectations for a pickup truck!

Owner of 2023 Hilux Double Cab 2.8 Rogue AT 4WD
As the owner of the 2023 Hilux Rogue 2.8 Diesel, I've been driving in Malaysia for a few months now, and I genuinely feel this car perfectly understands the local needs! First, let’s praise its performance — a full 5 stars without hesitation! For those bumpy palm oil plantation paths in the countryside or state roads washed out during the rainy season in Malaysia, its 2.8T diesel engine + 4WD is simply a "game-changer." Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands, and during uphill climbs, it delivered 500N·m of torque at just 1600rpm. Even with three adults in the back seat and a trunk full of camping gear, it handled it with ease. My wife even remarked, "It's so much more stable than our previous sedan." In KL's traffic jams, the 6-speed automatic transmission shifts seamlessly, completely avoiding the jarring sensation commonly associated with diesel vehicles. The interior gets a 4-star rating, mainly focusing on practicality. The 8-way power-adjustable front seats are very convenient to adjust, making long drives less tiring for the back. The dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear vents ensures that even in Malaysia’s 35-degree weather, the elderly and kids in the back can stay cool. However, the 6.75-inch infotainment screen feels a bit small, especially when using navigation, and there’s a bit too much plastic. If only there were more soft-touch materials, it would feel more comfortable. For the exterior, I’d give 4 stars. The sporty black trim of the Rogue edition is just my style, and it stands out in parking lots around Klang Valley. The 18-inch large wheels paired with 265-wide tires make driving on bad roads more stable. However, extra care is needed when cleaning the gaps in the wheels — given Malaysia's frequent rainy season, a trip to the countryside will leave them covered in yellow mud. Overall, this car is truly "powerful" in Malaysia. Its performance is undeniable, and with some minor optimizations in the interior and exterior details, it would be perfect!
