2023 Mazda CX-3 1.5 Plus Review

The B-Segment SUV market in Malaysia has always been fiercely competitive. Consumers value practicality for daily commuting, while also demanding good features and driving quality. The 2023 Mazda CX-3 1.5 Plus, as the brand's main model in this segment, aims to stand out with comprehensive safety features and upgraded comfort functions. Many are curious whether it can outshine its competitors in the same class. Today, we will explore its static features and conduct a dynamic test drive to see which users this car is best suited for.
Looking at the exterior, the CX-3 1.5 Plus carries forward Mazda's signature 'Kodo' design language, with smooth and impactful lines throughout. The front features a shield-shaped grille flanked by chrome trim, giving it high recognition. The sharp LED headlights seamlessly merge with the grille and come standard with automatic headlights and daytime running lights for enhanced practicality. The side profile showcases a continuous waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 18-inch wheels (215/50 R18 tires), giving the side a refined and elongated appearance. At the rear, the horizontal design of the LED taillights enhances visibility when illuminated, while the silver skid plate on the lower rear bumper adds a touch of SUV ruggedness.
Stepping inside, the interior quality is impressive. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, adorned with silver accents, creating a clean yet sophisticated design. The center display measures 8 inches, supports touch functionality, features a clear interface, and is easy to use. The instrument panel combines digital and analog designs, providing rich information. The inclusion of a head-up display (HUD) allows drivers to view key information like speed without looking down, enhancing overall safety. In terms of features, keyless entry, push-start ignition, single-zone automatic air conditioning, power-adjustable front seats (driver's seat with memory function), 60:40 split-folding rear seats, and a 220V/230V power outlet are all provided, catering to the needs of rear passengers to charge electronic devices.
In terms of space, the vehicle measures 4,275mm in length, 1,765mm in width, and 1,535mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,570mm, which is standard for the B-Segment SUVs. The front cabin offers ample space; a passenger with a height of 175cm will find plenty of headroom and legroom. The rear space comfortably accommodates two adults, with about two fists of legroom and sufficient headroom, though the slightly raised floor in the middle might cause some discomfort for passengers seated in the middle on longer journeys. The boot has a volume of 350L, enough to store a few suitcases for daily use, and folding down the rear seats further expands the capacity, enhancing practicality. As for storage, the front and rear door pockets, central armrest box, and glove box are all practical enough to meet daily needs.
In terms of performance, the CX-3 1.5 Plus is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power output of 114PS and a peak torque of 149N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power delivery is smooth when starting, with no abruptness. At low and medium speeds, the throttle response is quick, and stepping on the accelerator during overtaking prompts timely downshifts, sufficient for city driving conditions. However, its high-speed acceleration feels somewhat underpowered, as expected from a naturally aspirated engine, so don’t expect a strong thrust. Three driving modes are available: Eco, Normal, and Sport. Switching to Sport mode makes the throttle more responsive, and the transmission shift logic becomes more aggressive, suitable for those who enjoy sporty driving.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, providing the driver with sufficient confidence when cornering. The chassis adopts a combination of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension. The tuning leans towards comfort but also retains a certain level of support. When going over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively filters out most vibrations without producing a jarring impact. During cornering, body roll is well controlled and does not cause passenger discomfort. The braking performance is also commendable, with a linear pedal feel and even braking force distribution. In emergency braking situations, the car body remains stable without veering off course.
The safety features of the CX-3 1.5 Plus are a major highlight. In addition to standard features like ABS, electronic stability control, and six airbags, it also comes equipped with lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, active braking, and forward collision warning as standard. The addition of a 360-degree surround-view system and front and rear parking sensors makes parking significantly easier. These features are relatively comprehensive compared to other models in the same class, providing both drivers and passengers with a more secure travel experience.
In terms of driving comfort, the seats offer good support and wrapping. The front seats feature electric adjustments, and the driver’s seat comes with a memory function, making it easy to find a comfortable seating position. The rear seats are also generously padded, ensuring long-term comfort. Regarding noise control, the cabin remains quiet when driving at low speeds. While wind and tire noise increase at high speeds, it is still within an acceptable range and does not interfere with conversations inside the vehicle.
As for fuel consumption, during about 100 kilometers of city driving, the average fuel consumption was around 7.5L/100km, while on highways it was approximately 6.0L/100km. This performance is slightly above average among vehicles in the same class, offering good fuel economy for daily commuting.
Overall, the 2023 Mazda CX-3 1.5 Plus performs well in terms of exterior styling, interior design, features, and safety. Its performance and fuel efficiency also meet the demands of daily use. Compared to similar models like the Honda HR-V and Toyota C-HR, the CX-3 1.5 Plus offers more comprehensive safety features and a more refined interior, though it might fall slightly short in terms of space. This car is suitable for families prioritizing safety, those who appreciate a quality driving experience, and individuals with a preference for well-equipped vehicles. If you are looking for a well-rounded B-Segment SUV, the CX-3 1.5 Plus is worth considering.
