2023 Mazda CX-3 2.0 High Review

The B-segment SUV market has always been a popular choice among family users and young consumers in Malaysia, offering both the flexibility of daily commuting and the practicality of space. The 2023 Mazda CX-3 2.0 High, as the high-end version within this segment, focuses on balanced features and driving quality. In this test drive, we’ll explore whether it can stand out among competitors in the same price range with its attention to detail, bringing consumers an experience that exceeds expectations.
From a distance, the CX-3 2.0 High continues Mazda’s “KODO” design language, featuring smooth and slightly sporty lines. The front features a large shield-shaped grille, complemented by chrome trim connecting to the LED headlights on both sides, giving it a high level of recognition. The headlights are integrated with daytime running lights, which provide clear visual effects when illuminated. The body side’s waistline runs from the front to the rear, combined with 18-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, making the 4275mm body length appear more elongated. At the rear, the LED taillight assembly adopts a horizontal layout that echoes the design of the front, while the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a touch of SUV ruggedness.
Sitting inside, the interior predominantly uses black as the main color, paired with silver trim accents, delivering a texture that aligns with its price range. The center console features a clean layout, with a 7-inch touchscreen located in the center. Its operating fluency is decent and supports basic multimedia functions. In terms of materials, the top of the center console is wrapped in soft materials, and the door panels are also covered in leather, providing a comfortable feel. The configuration offers several highlights: the HUD head-up display can showcase speed, navigation, and other information, reducing the need for drivers to divert their gaze; the driver's seat supports electric adjustment and memory functions, while the passenger seat also offers electric adjustment, making daily usage very convenient; practical features such as keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and single-zone automatic air conditioning are all included, meeting the needs of most users.
In terms of space performance, the 2570mm wheelbase is standard for B-segment SUVs. The front seating space is ample—after a 175cm passenger adjusts the seat, there is still a fist of headroom. The rear legroom is about two fists, and the headroom is one fist. It might feel slightly cramped with three adults in the back, but it’s sufficient for everyday family use. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk offers a standard capacity of 350L and can expand significantly when the 60:40 split rear seats are folded down, accommodating strollers or suitcases with ease. There are also plenty of storage compartments inside the cabin, with practical capacities in the central armrest console and door storage slots. Additionally, the front row is equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet for convenient use of external devices.
In terms of performance, the CX-3 2.0 High is powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 154PS and a peak torque of 206N·m, paired with a 6AT transmission. During actual driving, the acceleration is responsive, with smooth torque output in low RPMs, making it very convenient for daily city commutes. When accelerating to 80km/h and further pressing the accelerator, the power delivery remains linear, and overtaking does not require deliberate downshifting. The transmission’s shift logic is clear, with proactive upshifts and reasonably quick downshifts. Paired with paddle shifters on the steering wheel, it can also provide occasional driving fun. There are three driving modes available: Economy, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive.
In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal slack and moderate feedback, making it very handy to drive. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson and rear torsion beam suspension combination, tuned for comfort. It filters out most fine vibrations when tackling speed bumps or bumpy roads in urban areas. During high-speed cornering, body roll is well-controlled, providing good stability. The braking performance is linear, with evenly distributed braking force, which gives confidence during daily driving.
The noise control is relatively well done. While driving in urban areas, tire and engine noise are not noticeable. At highway speeds of up to 120 km/h, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect in-car conversations. The seats offer excellent wrapping and support, making long drives not tiring. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.3L/100km. During actual test drives, urban conditions yielded about 7.5L/100km, while highway fuel consumption was approximately 5.8L/100km, showing an average performance.
One major advantage of the CX-3 2.0 High is its safety features. It comes standard with 6 airbags, ABS, electronic stability control, along with lane departure assist, active braking, and forward collision warning systems, providing added assurance to driving. Front and rear parking cameras and reversing sensors also make parking more convenient.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2023 Mazda CX-3 2.0 High lie in its balanced configuration and excellent driving quality. Compared to other B-class SUVs in the same price range, it offers more comprehensive safety features. Comfort features like electrically adjustable seats and HUD are also very practical. Although the space is not the largest, it is sufficient for daily family use. This car is suitable for families focusing on driving quality and balanced configurations or young consumers pursuing practicality and safety. If you are looking for an SUV that is flexible for daily commuting, has sufficient configurations, and is easy to drive, the CX-3 2.0 High is worth considering.
