In 2023, the competition in Malaysia's pickup truck market remains fierce. The demand for a balance between cargo capacity and daily comfort among family users continues to rise, making mid-range 4x4 pickups the top choice for most users. The Mitsubishi Triton, as a classic model in this segment, features the 2023 4x4 VGT AT version, emphasizing the combination of "practical configurations + reliable performance." Many users are curious whether it can strike a balance between practicality and driving experience. This article will analyze the real performance of this vehicle through a static experience and dynamic testing.

From the exterior view, the 2023 Triton 4x4 VGT AT continues the brand's classic tough styling. The front features a large trapezoidal grille adorned with chrome trims. The combination of halogen primary headlights and LED daytime running lights offers high recognition, but the design leans towards a more stable and less trendy approach. The side profile showcases straight lines, with a length of 5305mm and a width of 1815mm, which are standard dimensions among pickup trucks in this class. The 245/70 R16 tires combined with silver anti-scratch strips strike a balance between off-road capability and visual harmony. At the rear, the vertically arranged taillights and simple rear bumper design prioritize practicality over design aesthetics, while the tailgate offers a moderate opening height, making it convenient for everyday loading and unloading.

Upon entering the cabin, the interior design emphasizes practicality. The dashboard is made of hard plastic materials, which feel slightly stiff but offer neat workmanship. The instrument panel is a backlit analog display with clear information. On the left side is the tachometer and fuel level gauge, while the right side features the speedometer and water temperature gauge. A small central screen displays basic data like mileage and fuel consumption. A multifunctional steering wheel is standard, supporting volume adjustment and Bluetooth phone functionality with straightforward operational logic. The center console screen is non-touch, paired with physical buttons and knobs, which, although lacking the convenience of a touchscreen, are safer for blind operation while driving. The front row is equipped with single-zone manual air conditioning, and the adjustment knobs have moderate resistance. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents and 220V/230V power outlets to meet passengers' charging needs. In terms of space, the 3000mm wheelbase provides ample rear seating space. Passengers with a height of 178cm sitting in the rear row will still have two fists' worth of legroom. The rear seats come with a foldable armrest, enhancing comfort during long trips. For storage, the front and rear door panel storage slots can hold water bottles. The center armrest box has moderate depth, and there is an additional storage compartment underneath the front seats, making the overall storage capacity sufficient for daily use.

In the powertrain department, this vehicle is equipped with a 2.4L turbocharged diesel engine that delivers a maximum power of 181PS and a peak torque of 430N·m, paired with a 6AT transmission. The power response during startup is relatively smooth, but when the accelerator is pressed deeply, the peak torque is released at 2500rpm, offering a significant boost in acceleration. During overtaking, the transmission downshifts actively, and the power connection feels smooth. The driving modes include 2H, 4H, and 4L. The 2H mode suffices for everyday urban driving, while the engine maintains around 2000rpm during highway cruising, ensuring acceptable noise control. Regarding the chassis, the front suspension uses MacPherson independent suspension, and the rear uses a rigid elliptical leaf spring. When dealing with small bumps on city roads, the vibration filtering is average, but the suspension provides good support when crossing speed bumps or rough roads, with minimal body sway. The steering feels heavy with precise directional feedback, and the vehicle maintains stability in corners with minimal body roll. During the fuel consumption test covering a mix of city and highway conditions, the average fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L per 100 kilometers, which is standard for a 2.4T diesel pickup. Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with a hill-start assist function, effectively preventing rollback when starting on slopes and enhancing safety.

In terms of driving comfort, the front seats are manually adjustable, with decent backrest and cushion support, but prolonged driving may cause slight lumbar fatigue. The rear seat padding is somewhat firm, providing comfortable seating for short trips, but longer journeys may require adjusting one's sitting posture. As for noise control, engine noise is minimal during idling, but wind and tire noise become noticeable at high speeds, albeit within an acceptable range. In terms of braking, the combination of front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes provides a linear braking response, with stable body posture during emergency braking and no noticeable forward pitching effect.

In conclusion, the core advantages of the 2023 Mitsubishi Triton 4x4 VGT AT lie in its reliable diesel powertrain, spacious interior, and practical features such as rear power outlets and a multifunction steering wheel, meeting the daily needs of family users. Compared to its competitors in the same segment, its price (RM 113,890) makes it a standout choice in terms of value for money in the mid-range 4x4 pickup market. Although its interior materials and tech features may not be as modern as some rivals, its practicality and durability cater to the core needs of pickup users.

This vehicle is suitable for two types of users: first, those who need to balance cargo transport with family trips, as the 3000mm wheelbase and 75L fuel tank capacity can accommodate daily cargo needs and long-distance travel; second, users who value reliability and fuel efficiency, as the low fuel consumption and high torque of the diesel engine are ideal for frequent highway or rural road scenarios.

Overall, the 2023 Triton 4x4 VGT AT is a "practical-first" pickup truck. It does not boast excessive flashy features but delivers a balanced performance in terms of power, space, and durability, making it a worthwhile option in the mid-range pickup market.

The old pickup I used to drive on the East Coast Highway was always overtaken, but after switching to the Triton 2.4 VGT AT, I can finally hold my head high—430N·m of torque is there with just a push on the pedal, and it's smooth and jerk-free when following traffic in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, the hill-start assist holds firmly so there's no need to worry about rolling back. The exterior is tough-looking, and running on bumpy roads in rural Sabah gets lots of attention. However, the interior has a bit of a plastic feel, and the manual key isn't as convenient as a keyless entry system. Still, the 5-year/200,000-kilometer warranty is very reassuring, and with a price of over RM110,000, it’s great for both cargo and passengers. In a multi-terrain place like Malaysia, it indeed offers better value for money compared to the Hilux I was considering.

Last Saturday, I took my family to Gunteng Mountain for an outing. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The mountain roads were muddy and slippery, but after switching to 4WD, the VGT turbo kicked in with 430N·m of torque, remaining very steady. The hill assist also worked perfectly. However, the rear drum brakes felt a bit soft during continuous downhill driving (performance deducted by 1 point). In terms of safety, there were no worries; vehicle stability control was active the entire time, and the ISO FIX interface securely locked the child's seat in place (safety gets a full 5 points without a doubt). The interior may feel plasticky, but the 6 speakers playing Malaysian songs were quite enjoyable, and the rear armrest was sufficient for my family to place their drinks. However, the manual key and mechanical instrument panel felt a bit low-end (interior deducted by 1 point).

Previously, I drove an older model of a pickup truck. After switching to the 2023 Triton 4x4 VGT AT, it's truly amazing! Driving long distances on the East Coast of Malaysia, the 2.4T diesel engine provides plenty of power, making overtaking effortless, and the 6-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly. On weekends, going to the rainforests of Sabah is easy with its 430N·m torque for climbing and 245/70 R16 tires for strong grip. Even during peak hour traffic jams, it doesn't feel sluggish. However, the manual key for unlocking is a bit inconvenient, and if the rear drum brakes were disc brakes, it would be even better. The safety features are sufficient, and the ISOFIX anchor points make it convenient for traveling with kids. The 5-year or 200,000 km warranty is reassuring, and the price of over RM110,000 is really worth it. Highly recommend it to those who need a vehicle for both family and off-road use!
