The B-segment hatchback market in Malaysia has always been a fiercely competitive space for family and young users. Consumers value fuel efficiency for daily commuting, practical features, and occasionally need space for short weekend trips. The 2023 Proton Iriz 1.6 Active CVT, as a popular contender in this segment, retains its affordable pricing while enhancing its safety features and smart functionalities. Can it stand out among its peers? Through an actual test drive, we will thoroughly analyze its real performance from static experience to dynamic performance.

From the exterior perspective, the 2023 Iriz 1.6 Active CVT continues Proton's family design language, featuring a highly recognizable “Infinite Weave” front grille paired with chrome accents. The sharp LED headlights on both sides come standard with automatic illumination and daytime running lights for added convenience in daily use. The car's side profile presents fluid lines, complemented by 16-inch wheels paired with 185/55 R16 tires, offering well-balanced proportions. At the rear, the smoked LED taillights align with a small rear spoiler on the trunk, adding a touch of sportiness. The overall design avoids excessive flamboyance, fitting its role as a family hatchback, while chrome details and black cladding enhance its sophistication.

Stepping inside, the interior adopts a predominantly dark color scheme, with a streamlined and practical dashboard layout. The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center is responsive and includes Bluetooth connectivity and basic smart functionalities. Physical buttons below are preserved for climate control adjustments, which, combined with voice control capabilities, make daily operations very convenient. The multifunction steering wheel allows for volume and call control, providing a comfortable grip. The dashboard features a backlit analog design, with clearly displayed information. While it lacks the advanced feel of a fully digital setup, it excels in being straightforward and easy to read. The seats are upholstered in fabric, with manual adjustment for the front seats. The backrest and cushion provide good support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding the trunk space to accommodate larger items without issues. In terms of space, the 2555mm wheelbase is within the mainstream level for the B-segment. A 175cm tall passenger seated in the rear has about two fists of legroom and adequate headroom. There are plenty of front storage options, with the center armrest box and door storage slots fitting items like phones and water bottles. The trunk’s standard volume is 215L, sufficient for groceries or luggage for short trips.

In terms of power, the car is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum power of 109PS and a peak torque of 150N·m, paired with a CVT transmission. The power response during start-up is smooth, with no noticeable jerking, making it suitable for city traffic. The low-to-medium-speed acceleration is adequate, and during overtaking, pressing the accelerator harder causes the CVT transmission to simulate gear changes, delivering linear power output. While it lacks the explosive force of turbocharged engines, it is entirely capable for daily commuting. There is only a standard driving mode available, and users seeking spirited driving may find it less dynamic.

In terms of handling, the combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam non-independent suspension is tuned for comfort. When going over speed bumps or uneven surfaces, the suspension absorbs most minor vibrations, keeping the car stable without significant bounces. During cornering, body roll is kept within a reasonable range, and the steering is precise with minimal play, making lane changes or turns very agile. The braking performance is stable with a combination of front ventilated disc brakes and rear drum brakes. The brake pedal offers linear feedback and a good response, providing ample confidence. In fuel consumption tests, the city driving consumption was about 7.8L per 100km, while highway consumption was around 6.5L per 100km. The combined fuel consumption is close to the official claim of 7.4L per 100km, placing its fuel economy among the upper-middle level in its segment.

The details of ride comfort are well-executed, with the interior noise control in place. Wind and tire noise at high speeds are not too noticeable and do not affect normal conversations; the seats offer a balanced combination of wrapping and support. Although the rear air conditioning vents are not equipped, the cooling performance of the front single-zone air conditioning is sufficient, allowing rear passengers to feel the coolness. The safety configuration is a highlight of this car, featuring 6 standard airbags, vehicle stability control, front and rear sensors, and a reversing camera. The hill-start assist function is very practical for hill starts, providing families with a strong sense of security.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton Iriz 1.6 Active CVT lie in its balanced performance: comprehensive safety features, sufficient space, economic fuel consumption, and a price of RM 57,300, making its value-for-money stand out in the B-segment. Compared to the Perodua Myvi of the same class, it has more airbags and a longer wheelbase; compared to the Honda Jazz, it is more affordable with more practical features. This car is suitable for family users who value safety and practicality or for young office workers with a limited budget who want comprehensive features. It can easily handle daily commuting, grocery shopping, and picking up kids. If you don't need aggressive driving and just want a reliable and worry-free family hatchback, the Iriz 1.6 Active CVT will be a great choice.

Pros
The vehicle stability system performs excellently, providing strong safety in heavy rain braking and cornering on waterlogged roads without skidding.
LED headlights (including automatic headlights) have great penetration in rain and fog, and Keyless unlocking is convenient.
The rear space is spacious, and when folded 60:40/4:6, it can accommodate camping gear, durians, and other items.
Cons
1.6L naturally aspirated engine + CVT combination has sluggish acceleration and insufficient power for climbing, lacks the thrust of a turbo
Drum brakes have a soft pedal feel, noticeable body roll when cornering, and the 16-inch tires bump over speed bumps
The trunk volume is only 215L, limited space requires careful planning, restricting the loading of large items

The last time it rained heavily, the emergency brake didn't skid. This vehicle stability system truly provides a sense of safety!

Last weekend, I took my family to the base of Genting Mountain for an outing. The mountain road was slippery after the rain. The 1.6L naturally aspirated engine and CVT felt a bit sluggish at startup, but the hill-start assist kept the car stable. The LED headlights cut through the rain and fog, and the Keyless entry was very convenient. The rear seat accommodated three adults comfortably, and folding the 60:40 rear seat allowed us to fit all the camping gear. Although the manual air conditioning was not automatic, the voice control function was quite handy. The drum brakes, however, felt a bit soft, and the body roll was slightly noticeable on turns. Still, at this price point, with six airbags and vehicle stability control, the value for money was excellent.

Last Saturday, I took my parents to a fruit orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands to pick durians. Shortly after passing Subang Jaya, we encountered a heavy downpour. The LED automatic headlights turned on in an instant, the wipers swept furiously, and the vehicle stability control subtly kicked in. There was no skidding when going through waterlogged bends—thanks to the 6 airbags and seatbelt reminders for all seats, I could drive with peace of mind. The 1.6L naturally aspirated engine didn't have the punch of a turbo, but the CVT was so smooth that my parents didn't feel car sick. After folding the rear seats in a 4/6 split, we managed to fit three bags of durians, though the 215L trunk capacity really required careful planning. The silver-gray body resisted mud splashes quite well, but the 16-inch tires felt a bit bumpy over speed bumps. With a fuel consumption of 7.4L/100km, the 40L fuel tank is sufficient for a week of driving in KL city. The value-for-money aspect is truly impressive.

Everyday commuting in traffic, the CVT is as smooth as drinking teh tarik; on weekends, taking the whole family out for nasi lemak, even with three adults in the back, it doesn't feel cramped. However, the trunk can't fit too many durians, but the 1.6 NA engine is powerful enough for overtaking, and the interior feels very comfortable to touch. Totally worth the price!

Last week, when driving through a puddle on a rainy day, the car body was so stable as if it was glued to the road. This safety feature is really worth it!
