Specs

In Malaysia's luxury MPV market, the Toyota Vellfire has always been a popular choice among family users and business people. The 2023 2.5L model, as the core configuration of the series, mainly upgrades the interior technology and comfort configurations this time. Our purpose for the test drive is to verify whether these upgrades can sustain its market competitiveness while also evaluating the performance of its powertrain and space to meet the needs of target users.

From the exterior, the 2023 Vellfire continues its signature large chrome grille design, paired with LED automatic headlights and daytime running lights, exuding a steady style with high recognition. The side profile features smooth lines, with a length of 5005mm and a wheelbase of 3000mm, offering an elongated proportion. The 19-inch wheels and 225/55R19 tires enhance the visual heft. At the rear, the LED taillights follow a transversal design, echoing the front styling, while the rear fog lights and chrome trim strip add to the refined feel.

Inside, the dashboard adopts a symmetrical layout, with a 14-inch touchscreen as the visual focus, offering smooth operation and supporting CarPlay connectivity. The interior materials mainly consist of soft leather and wood grain panels, in line with its luxurious MPV positioning. The front seats feature 8-way electric adjustment, memory, and heating functions, while the co-pilot seat has 4-way electric adjustment, providing decent seating support. The rear seats are a highlight, with Ottoman captain’s chairs in the middle row that support multi-angle adjustment and leg rest functionality. The rear row includes independent air conditioning controls, an LCD screen, and a 220V power outlet, catering to long-distance travel needs. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest compartment is spacious, the door panel storage compartments can fit large bottles of water, and the third-row seats support 50:50/60:40 folding. When folded down, the trunk capacity can be expanded to a large size, making it flexible for daily cargo needs.

In terms of power, the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine delivers a maximum power output of 134kW (182PS) and a peak torque of 235N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. The power output is smooth in the initial phase, and the acceleration response is timely at low to medium speeds, making it suitable for city commuting. For highway overtaking, the accelerator needs to be pressed deeply, and the engine provides sufficient thrust after its revs increase to over 4000rpm. There are Normal and Eco driving modes. In Eco mode, throttle response is milder, but fuel efficiency improves. The steering wheel has moderate effort, minimal play, and offers nimble handling in daily driving. The chassis uses front MacPherson and rear double-wishbone independent suspensions, effectively absorbing road bumps. Stability is strong at high speeds, and body roll is controlled within a reasonable range during cornering without significant wobbling.

Regarding fuel consumption tests, the urban fuel consumption is approximately 9.5L per 100km, while highway consumption is about 7.8L per 100km. The overall fuel consumption is close to the official figure of 9L/100km, which is in line with the fuel efficiency level of MPVs in the same class. For safety features, it comes standard with six airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, and ACC adaptive cruise control, and the 360-degree panoramic camera and front and rear sensors enhance parking convenience. In terms of passenger comfort, the cabin offers excellent sound insulation, effectively controlling wind and tire noise at high speeds. The seats provide good support and wrapping, ensuring passengers don't easily feel fatigued during long journeys. Additionally, the engine start-stop technology and hill assist function improve daily usability.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Toyota Vellfire 2.5L lie in its spacious interior, abundant comfort features, and reliable powertrain. Compared to the Kia Carnival in the same class, the Vellfire offers higher brand retention value and a more luxurious interior feel; when compared to the Honda Odyssey, it stands out with more notable rear-seat comfort features. This vehicle is suitable for families that value a comfortable ride experience, especially those frequently accommodating elderly and children. It also fulfills business reception needs. If you value space, comfort, and brand reliability, the Vellfire 2.5L is worth considering.

Pros
Smooth power delivery, the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine + CVT combo ensures no jerks when following traffic in urban congestion, and remains stable at highway speeds of 110-120km/h
Interior has a premium feel, genuine leather seats with heating and memory functions, and the second-row Ottoman executive seats enhance riding comfort
Rich safety features such as automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning are practical and help prevent potential accidents
Cons
Power feels weak at speeds above 140km/h or when climbing hills with a full load, requiring heavy throttle input
Third-row space is cramped with thin materials, making long rides tiring; storage compartments are limited
Thin car paint is prone to scratches, and some plastic parts have noticeable gaps; workmanship details need improvement

Owner of 2023 Toyota Vellfire 2.5
As the owner of a 2023 Toyota Vellfire 2.5, I've been driving it in Malaysia for almost six months, and overall, I'm quite satisfied! Let me start with the performance, giving it 4 stars mainly because it performs quite well under Malaysia's road conditions — when driving in traffic in Kuala Lumpur, the combination of the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and CVT is very smooth, making it easy and worry-free to drive. When heading out on weekends with my family to places like Genting Highlands or Penang’s hilly roads, although the power isn't particularly strong, stepping hard on the accelerator when going uphill can keep up with the pace. The steering is stable, and the body roll is better-controlled in corners than I initially expected (considering it's an MPV). However, above 140km/h on the highway, the acceleration feels a bit weak, but since the speed limit on most Malaysian highways is 110km/h, it's more than adequate for daily use. As for the interior, I would also give it 4 stars; the overall quality is quite impressive. The leather seats come with heating and memory functions, making it very convenient to switch between my driving position and my wife's. The second-row Ottoman seats are the family's favorite — the kids watch cartoons in the back (thanks to the rear LCD screen and JBL sound system), while the elderly can adjust the leg rest and lie down to relax, making long trips comfortable. The 14-inch central control screen is smooth to operate, and the 360-degree camera is a huge help when parking in the narrow alleyways of Kuala Lumpur. However, one small drawback is that while the third-row seats fold down to provide enough space for luggage, some plastic parts of the interior have slightly visible seams. It would be perfect if the details were more refined. All in all, as a family MPV, the Vellfire is highly practical and comfortable for use in Malaysia. A rating of 4 stars is well-deserved!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Vellfire 2.5, having driven it in Malaysia for half a year, what gives me the most peace of mind is its safety features! On Malaysian highways, sudden lane changes happen quite often. Once, on the North-South Expressway, the car in front braked abruptly and Vellfire's active braking system intervened immediately, helping me avoid a rear-end collision—this 5-star safety rating is totally worth it! Features like lane departure warning and the 360-degree panoramic view are also especially useful when looking for parking spots in Kuala Lumpur. Even in narrow alleys, I'm not afraid of scraping the car while making a U-turn. In terms of appearance, Vellfire's "big mouth" grille is indeed very imposing, and it gets quite a lot of attention on the road. However, my friends say it looks a bit too business-like and lacks a touch of coziness for family use, so giving it 4 stars seems fair. As for the interior quality, it's flawless. The JBL sound system is great for listening to music during traffic jams, and the rear Ottoman seats with heating are extremely comfortable. When taking my family to Genting Highlands, my parents were able to recline and relax in the rear seats. The only downside is that the third-row space is a bit cramped, so sitting there for long trips might feel tiring. Overall, I’m still very satisfied!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Vellfire 2.5, after driving it for more than six months, I give both the exterior and interior a 4 out of 5, and I’m really quite satisfied! Regarding the exterior, the size of this car feels especially stable on Malaysia’s highways, and the body lines are elegant. Every time I go to KLIA to pick up clients, it feels really impressive. However, if the chrome decorations on the front could be a bit more understated, it would be better, as they can be somewhat dazzling under direct sunlight. As for the interior, the JBL sound system is amazing for listening to Malay songs during traffic jams, and the Ottoman seats in the rear are very practical for family trips to Genting. Elderly and children can recline and rest comfortably. The only downside is that the storage compartments in the third row are slightly scarce; you need to be careful so that phones and snacks don’t fall into the gaps. Overall, at this price point, the configuration and comfort are very suitable for either family or business use in Malaysia. A 4 out of 5 rating is absolutely well-deserved!

As the owner of the 2023 Toyota Vellfire 2.5, having driven it in Malaysia for over half a year, the overall experience has been pretty great! Let’s talk about performance first — I’d give it 4 stars. As an MPV, it’s more than sufficient for daily family use and business receptions. The 2.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT transmission might not be particularly aggressive when starting off, but it’s extremely smooth during stop-and-go traffic in Kuala Lumpur. The throttle response is also very linear, with no jerkiness at all. On the highway, driving at 110-120 km/h feels very stable. Even when encountering slight undulating roads on the North-South Expressway, the chassis absorbs the bumps quite well, and my family in the back row find it very comfortable. However, considering the vehicle weighs over 2 tonnes, the power does feel a bit lacking when the car is fully loaded with seven passengers and the air conditioning is on while climbing uphill — you’ll need to press the accelerator deeper, and that’s a minor downside. As for the exterior, I’d also give it 4 stars. The Vellfire’s design is really impressive, especially the “lightning-eye” LED headlights, which make it highly recognizable on the road at night! The body lines are sleek yet retain a business vibe, and its 5-meter-long body gets quite a lot of attention when parked at the neighborhood. However, the paint seems a bit thin — the car suffered a tiny chip in the paint when the car parked next to me opened its door and bumped into mine at the parking lot. So, extra care is required. Overall, these aspects meet my expectations, and it’s a very suitable MPV for Malaysian families!

Sure! Here's the translated content in English: As an owner of the 2023 Vellfire 2.5, having driven in Malaysia for half a year, what I most want to talk about are the interior and safety aspects. Let’s start with the interior, which I think objectively deserves a score of 4 — the overall texture is indeed premium. The front row comes with 8-way power seats with heating and memory function. During the peak hour traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur, you can adjust the seat to a comfortable angle and lean back; the leather is soft and not stuffy at all. The Ottoman seats in the middle row are even better. On weekends, when taking the family to Genting Highlands, my child simply raises the leg support and falls asleep. The independent rear air conditioning is also quite effective — unlike some MPVs where the rear is cold and the front is hot. However, I deduct one point because the material of the third row feels a bit thin. Last time, I took three relatives to Malacca, and after two hours of sitting in the back row, the elder said their back felt a bit sore. If the third row could also have a soft cushion, it would be perfect. Now, onto safety — I must give a full score! On Malaysia's highways, there are often motorcycles that suddenly change lanes, as well as e-bikes darting out at small-town intersections. The Vellfire’s automatic braking has truly saved me once — last month in George Town, Penang, a taxi in front suddenly braked abruptly to pick up a passenger. Before I could react, the car itself went “beep-beep” as a warning and then stopped, leaving just half a meter to the car in front! When driving along the North-South Highway using ACC cruise control, the lane departure warning system gently steers the wheel. Coupled with six airbags and 360-degree cameras, I always feel particularly secure whenever I take my wife and kids out. After all, when driving in Malaysia, safety features are something you really can’t skimp on, and the Vellfire doesn’t disappoint in this regard.
