The C-Segment SUV market has always been a primary focus for Malaysian family users. This type of vehicle needs to strike a precise balance between space, features, fuel efficiency, and price. The 2024 Mazda CX-5 2.0G 2WD Mid is designed to meet this demand, continuing Mazda's family design aesthetics while making advanced safety features a core selling point. Coupled with relatively affordable pricing, it has piqued the curiosity of many consumers about whether its actual performance can meet expectations. The primary goal of this review is to verify the practicality and driving experience of this car in daily commuting and family outing scenarios, providing potential buyers with a valuable reference.

From the exterior, the 2024 CX-5 2.0G Mid retains the family-style Kodo design language, with smooth and muscular lines overall. The front shield-shaped grille with chrome accents connects to the LED headlights on both sides, visually enhancing the width of the vehicle. The body side's waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke wheels, achieving a well-proportioned look without appearing bulky. At the rear, the horizontally designed LED tail lights echo the front-end design, while the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds a rugged SUV character. In terms of details, features like automatic headlights, front fog lamps, and rain-sensing wipers are standard, ensuring convenience for everyday use.

Inside the cabin, the interior layout is simple and orderly, with the central console slightly tilted toward the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the seats and inner door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, offering a comfortable tactile feel. The 7-inch touchscreen in combination with the physical buttons below provides a clear operation logic, allowing quick function adjustments even while driving. For features, the front seats support 10-way electronic adjustments (driver) and 6-way electronic adjustments (passenger). The dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air conditioning vents, and 220V/230V power sockets cater to family users' needs. Safety features are a highlight; apart from six airbags, standard features include ACC adaptive cruise control, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking systems, which are rarely seen in models within this price range.

In terms of space, the body dimensions are 4550mm/1840mm/1675mm (length/width/height), with a wheelbase of 2700mm, which falls within the mainstream level of the C-Segment SUV market. The front-row seating space is ample, and for a 175cm (5’9”) passenger after adjusting the seat, there is still a fist’s worth of headroom. The rear row offers around two fists of legroom and a fist of headroom, making it spacious enough to comfortably seat three adults without feeling cramped. The trunk provides a standard capacity of 442L, which can accommodate two 28-inch suitcases with space to spare. Rear seats support a 40/20/40 split-folding feature, which can create additional cargo space for transporting larger items. Additionally, both the front and rear rows are equipped with cup holders and storage compartments, making it easy to store small daily items.

In terms of driving dynamics, this car is equipped with a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine that delivers a maximum output of 164PS and a peak torque of 213N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power output is smooth during startup, with no noticeable jerking. During acceleration, the engine reaches its peak torque at around 4000rpm. For mid-range overtaking, simply step on the accelerator harder, and the transmission will downshift promptly with a responsive performance. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension. It is tuned for comfort, effectively filtering vibrations when going over speed bumps or rough roads, and avoiding harsh impacts. The steering feel is precise with minimal play, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering, maintaining a good level of stability.

Fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with an official combined fuel consumption of 6.9L/100km. In actual tests, fuel consumption in urban congested areas is about 8.2L/100km, while cruising on highways can lower it to 6.5L/100km. Overall, the fuel consumption level is above average among SUVs with the same displacement. NVH control is well-executed, with wind and tire noise at an acceptable level during high-speed driving, not affecting conversations among passengers in the car. Additionally, the inclusion of features such as electric parking brake and hill-start assist has enhanced daily driving convenience.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2024 Mazda CX-5 2.0G 2WD Mid lie in its comprehensive active safety features, comfortable driving and riding experience, and practical space performance. Compared to competitors in the same class, it offers richer safety configurations, a more premium interior feel, and retains an affordable price range, making its cost-performance ratio outstanding. This car is very suitable for users who prioritize family travel safety and pursue a comfortable driving experience. Whether it's for daily commuting or short weekend road trips, it can easily meet your needs.

If you are looking for a well-rounded C-segment SUV and prioritize safety and comfort, then the 2024 Mazda CX-5 2.0G 2WD Mid is worth adding to your consideration list. It has no obvious shortcomings and meets the core needs of family users with solid product performance.

The previous car was an older model Honda CR-V, and I switched to the CX-5 Mid version mainly for its handling and interior quality. Giving 4 stars for safety is justified, as it comes with 6 airbags and a full suite of active safety features. The ACC and automatic braking have saved me twice during sudden stops in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic. The 4 stars for the interior are because the central control screen is only 7 inches, smaller than other Japanese cars in the same price range, but the Nappa leather seats and dual-zone air conditioning are very practical for the hot sunny weather in Malaysia. On weekends when taking my family to Genting Highlands, the 2.2 diesel engine provides enough power for uphill drives, and the 195mm ground clearance handles mountain roads and rough terrain with ease. A minor drawback is the 442L trunk space, which feels a bit cramped when loading a baby stroller and luggage, but the 4/2/4 foldable rear seats can be a handy solution in emergencies. Overall, at the RM140,000 price point, the CX-5's balance makes it highly competitive in the Malaysian market.

Driving the CX-5 during daily traffic jams feels very stable. The 2.2 engine provides powerful overtaking, and the 442L trunk can accommodate the whole family's weekend luggage. The only drawback is that the central control screen is a bit small, but overall very satisfied—worth the price!

This CX-5 interior feels really high-quality, but the center console screen's glare makes me question my life!

Previously, I was driving an old model of a Japanese sedan, and switching to the CX-5 2.0G Mid was definitely the right choice! The interior quality is absolutely amazing, with soft padding and stitching that are much finer than the similarly priced CR-V, 5 points with no complaints. The Kodo design of the exterior is timeless, but the 17-inch wheels look a bit small on wide roads, deducting 1 point. During early morning traffic near KLCC, the throttle response is smooth without being jerky, and the ACC adaptive cruise control frees my right foot. On weekends, taking the family to Genting, the 2.0 engine offers sufficient power for climbing hills, with fuel consumption at just 7.2L/100km, even lower than the official figure. A minor issue is that the 7-inch infotainment screen is a bit small, and CarPlay occasionally lags after prolonged use. However, for just over 140,000 MYR, the safety features are fully packed (6 airbags + automatic emergency braking), and the rear row comfortably fits three relatives without feeling cramped. Totally worth it!
