2024 Mitsubishi Triton AT GL Review

Nowadays, the pickup truck market in Malaysia is becoming increasingly competitive. The overlap between household and light off-road needs has made midsize pickups a second choice for many families. Positioned as a practical 4WD diesel model under the brand, the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton AT GL enters the market with a price of over RM110,000, a 5-year/200,000 km warranty, and 430 Nm of diesel torque. Through a static review and dynamic test drive, let’s see if it can meet the needs of both daily commuting and weekend light off-roading.
From the exterior, the new Triton AT GL retains the brand’s signature rugged style. The large front grille with chrome accents offers good recognition. The body lines are straight, and its 5320mm length and 3130mm wheelbase are at a mainstream level for its class, while its 1865mm width ensures sufficient interior space. The rear design is simple, and the LED taillights provide a clear visual effect when lit. The rear fog light is a standard feature, catering to daily usage needs. In terms of lighting systems, apart from the automatic headlight function, the rest are halogen light sources. While not stunning, they sufficiently meet basic lighting needs.
Inside the vehicle, the interior focuses on practicality. The dashboard layout is straightforward, and the multifunctional steering wheel supports basic functions such as audio control, making it user-friendly. The instrument cluster features a backlit analog design, with clear information display; however, it lacks the technological feel of some digital instrument clusters found in similarly priced models. The seats are manually adjustable and made from fabric, offering adequate support and average wrapping, ensuring no significant discomfort during long periods of sitting. In terms of configuration, the front features manual air conditioning, while the rear has air vents and power outlets. The four-speaker audio system fulfills basic listening needs. For safety, it is equipped with 3 airbags, ABS, vehicle stability control, hill start assist, and rear parking radar as standard. ISO FIX interfaces are also provided, ensuring basic safety measures are in place. Regarding space performance, the rear legroom offers around two fist-widths of clearance for passengers up to 175cm tall, and headroom is also ample. For storage, the door pockets, central armrest box, and cup holders are generous enough to hold everyday items.
In dynamic driving, the performance of the 2.4T diesel engine is a highlight. The 184PS power output and 430Nm of torque deliver maximum torque at 2500 rpm, offering swift power response during startup. Even when fully loaded, overtaking does not feel laborious. The 6-speed automatic transmission provides smooth and logically organized gear shifts, resulting in minimal jerking in urban traffic conditions. Regarding driving modes, it offers 2H, 4H, and 4L modes, allowing for effortless handling of light off-road conditions. The chassis features a front double-wishbone independent suspension and a rear leaf spring system. While driving on paved roads, the suspension’s ability to filter minor bumps is average; rear passengers may experience notable vibrations. However, the suspension offers good support while going over speed bumps. On bumpy or unpaved roads, the advantage of leaf springs becomes apparent, with the chassis feeling solid and not loose. The steering is on the heavier side but precise, offering good stability during high-speed driving. Body roll is kept within acceptable limits when cornering.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 12.8L/100km. During our test drive, we observed about 14L/100km in urban traffic conditions, which dropped to around 10.5L during highway cruising. Overall, this meets the expectations for a diesel pickup truck. As for noise control, the engine noise is slightly loud at idle, but once you’re driving, wind and tire noise are well-managed, and in-cabin conversations are not significantly affected.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton AT GL lie in its practical space, powerful diesel engine, reliable four-wheel-drive system, and affordable price. Compared to competitors in the same class such as the Toyota Hilux 2.4G and Ford Ranger XL, it boasts superior torque parameters and a more attractive warranty policy. However, its tech features and interior quality are slightly inferior. This vehicle is suitable for families or small businesses that prioritize power and practicality, occasionally need light off-roading, and have a budget within 120,000 MYR. If you aim for balanced performance and high cost-effectiveness rather than cutting-edge technology or luxury, the Triton AT GL would be a good choice.
