In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-Segment SUV market has become increasingly fierce. Consumers are pursuing both fuel efficiency and daily practicality, while also having higher expectations for performance and smart features. The Jaecoo J7 PHEV 2WD, which is set to be launched in February 2025, enters the market with a comprehensive power output of 347PS, 106km of pure electric range, and fully equipped safety features, priced at RM158,800, seemingly offering an outstanding value-for-money proposition. This review will focus on its static experience, dynamic performance, and adaptability to real-life usage scenarios, providing a reference for prospective buyers.

The exterior of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV follows a bold and robust design language, with an overall square shape that avoids appearing bulky. The front sports a large vertical waterfall-style grille, complemented by sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides, giving it high recognizability. The side profile features a straight waistline, with a minimum ground clearance of 200mm and 235/50 R19 tires enhancing its SUV off-road appeal. The rear design is simple, with a through-type LED taillight that becomes prominent at night. The silver skid plate under the rear bumper also adds a sense of detail and layering. The lighting system comes standard with LED headlights across the range, and features such as automatic headlights and daytime running lights enhance daily convenience.

Inside, the cabin adopts a black color scheme, with the dashboard wrapped in soft-touch materials highlighted by silver trims, meeting the quality expectations for its price range. A 10.25-inch full LCD instrument cluster paired with a 14.8-inch central control screen forms a dual-screen design, offering clear and smooth interfaces that support touch operation. The HUD head-up display shows information such as speed and navigation, reducing distractions during driving. In terms of features, the front seats support six-way power adjustment (driver) and four-way power adjustment (passenger) with heating functions. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-fold design, allowing for an expanded storage area when folded down. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning, independent rear vents, a Sony 8-speaker audio system, and a fixed panoramic sunroof (with a sunshade) further enhance passenger comfort.

In terms of space, the 4500mm length and 2672mm wheelbase position it at a mid-level among C-Segment SUVs. The front row offers ample space, with a headroom of one fist for passengers up to 180cm tall. The rear legroom measures about two fists, with one fist of headroom, meeting the needs of a typical family. The trunk has a standard capacity of 500L, capable of accommodating two 28-inch suitcases with ease. When the rear seats are folded down, it can hold larger items. For storage details, the center armrest box, door storage pockets, and front cup holders provide practical spaces for storing daily small items.

The power system is the core highlight of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV, featuring a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a permanent magnet synchronous motor, delivering a combined system power of 255kW (347PS) and a combined torque of 525N·m, matched with an AT transmission. In pure electric mode, the 18.3kWh lithium iron phosphate battery offers an official range of 106km, sufficient for short urban commutes. In hybrid mode, the vehicle demonstrates quick startup and acceleration response, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 8.5 seconds. Pressing the accelerator pedal deeply during overtaking provides a significant push-back feeling. Driving modes include Pure Electric, Hybrid, and Sport, with the Sport mode offering more aggressive power output, suitable for highway driving.

In terms of handling and chassis, the combination of front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for comfort. During daily driving, the suspension can filter out most road bumps, and when passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the body sway is relatively minimal; the steering feel is light and the directional precision is moderate, making it suitable for urban driving. At high speeds, the vehicle maintains good stability, and the body roll control is within an acceptable range. The braking system performs linearly; the combination of front ventilated discs and rear solid discs provides sufficient braking power, with brake distances meeting expectations.

In terms of energy consumption, the power consumption in pure electric mode is about 18.5kWh per 100 kilometers, which is basically consistent with the official data; in hybrid mode, the combined fuel consumption is about 4.7L/100km, showing outstanding fuel economy. Regarding charging efficiency, fast charging can replenish the battery to 80% in 0.3 hours, while slow charging takes 8 hours, making it suitable for home charging stations. Noise control is commendable, with almost no noise in pure electric mode. When the engine engages in hybrid mode, the noise remains relatively low, and wind and tire noise at high speeds are kept within a reasonable range.

In terms of safety features, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV comes standard with 8 airbags (including knee airbags and front and rear head curtain airbags), ABS, electronic stability control, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, ACC adaptive cruise control, 360-degree surround-view cameras, and more, offering comprehensive safety performance. The battery comes with an 8-year or 160,000-kilometer warranty, reducing the user’s concerns about later use.

Overall, the core advantages of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV 2WD include its strong performance, practical pure electric range, rich features, and reasonable pricing. Compared with other C-segment PHEV SUVs in the same class (such as the Toyota RAV4 PHEV or Honda CR-V PHEV), it is more affordable, better equipped, and boasts superior power specifications, though its brand recognition is slightly lower. It is suitable for families who value performance, features, and fuel efficiency, especially for those who have shorter daily commutes but occasionally need to travel long distances.

In summary, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV 2WD is a well-balanced model that combines performance, comfort, practicality, and safety. It offers high value for its price range. If you're looking for a new energy SUV that is suitable for family use and has a budget of around RM160,000, the Jaecoo J7 PHEV is worth considering.

Previously drove an old gasoline SUV, but switching to the 2025 Jaecoo J7 PHEV 2WD feels like entering a whole new world! During the morning rush hour on the LDP highway, the pure electric mode is so quiet that I can clearly hear the radio. When overtaking, the hybrid system's 347 horsepower is ready to go with just a press; its 8.5-second 0-100 km/h performance is even more powerful than my friend's CR-V e:HEV. The 5-star performance rating is well deserved. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the 200mm ground clearance made it easy to handle mountain and bumpy roads. The ACC adaptive cruise control freed up my right foot, but the rear air conditioning vents are a bit weak and need to be turned up. For safety, the 8 airbags and full suite of active braking features are reassuring. The system performed an automatic emergency brake last time we almost rear-ended someone on Jalan Bukit Bintang. The 4-star safety rating is very comforting. The interior has a lot of soft padding, but the central control screen collecting fingerprints is a minor downside, so I’ll give it 4 stars. The pure electric range of 106 km is enough for three days of city driving. Fast charging takes only 20 minutes to fully recharge, and charging in Malaysia is also very convenient. At 158,000 MYR, it's definitely worth it!

Last Saturday, took the family to Cameron Highlands. The 310 N·m torque of the motor responded instantly while climbing, and the 8.5-second acceleration to 100 km/h in hybrid mode made overtaking effortless. During the heavy rain, the rain-sensing wipers adjusted their speed automatically, the 14.8-inch central control screen provided clear navigation, and the bass of the Sony audio system echoed in the mountains. However, during high-speed cornering, the body roll was slightly noticeable. Although the safety features are complete, the lack of lane centering assist deducts one point. The soft interior materials and 6-way power seats are very comfortable, and the 500L trunk fit all the family luggage. The 106km pure electric range is sufficient for urban commuting.

This hybrid acceleration is so strong! Overtaking in the city just takes a tap on the pedal, and it rockets forward. On the highway, the oil-electric transition is also smooth. Awesome!

The exterior, interior, and safety are all amazing! It's just that when climbing a slope, the push-back feeling comes slowly after stepping deep on the accelerator...
